    No full text
After an overview of the major stages of Giorgio Angelieri’s publishing activity in Venice and Vicenza, this essay focuses on Petrarch’s works in Italian language published in Angelieri’s printing shop in 1586. We discuss how Petrarch was printed in the second half of the sixteenth century, we trace back to the Lyon’s sources he might look to, and the authors of the accessory materials published along with Canzoniere and Triumphi. Finally, we examine a copy of the book now held in Kyoto, focusing on an ownership inscription by the Bolognese painter Bartolomeo Passerotti.

    No full text
The project of digitalization of the Giambattista Bodoni's materials and the Digital Teca of the Palatina Library in Parma, initiated under Sabina Magrini’s leadership, were among the most ambitious efforts to digitize and enhance the typographic and documentary heritage of Giambattista Bodoni. Launched in 2014, the Teca aimed to merge cataloging, remote access, and inclusivity. However, it was soon discontinued, leaving the digital legacy of the Palatina Library in limbo.

English teaching in a non-aligned nation: a comparative study of two English grammar textbooks

    No full text
This paper aims to examine how English language education developed during a crucial period in Yugoslavian history, namely Yugoslavia’s detachment from the Eastern bloc after the so-called Tito-Stalin split in 1948. At that time, Yugoslavia became a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement, thus establishing a delicate and precarious equidistance from both the United States and the Soviet Union. This process of repositioning on the world’s geopolitical stage had a profound impact on foreign language teaching in Yugoslav schools. In the 1950s, Russian lost its status as the predominantly taught foreign language, becoming an optional language on a par with French, German and Italian - which had existing traditions in various regions – as well as with English, which lacked an established presence. The paper concentrates specifically on English grammar books, which at the time functioned as the primary teaching tools in Yugoslavian secondary schools. In this context, there was little distinction between English language books and grammar books, as grammar, taught through the grammar-translation method, remained the core of language education throughout the period. In particular, the study analyses Milan Stanković’s Gramatika engleskog jezika (1955) – which was the primary English textbook used in secondary schools throughout Yugoslavia for decades – and Rudolf Filipović’s An Outline of English Grammar (1956). By comparing these two textbooks, which embody two markedly different conceptions of grammar instruction, the paper explores the pedagogical tensions between traditional approaches and emerging structuralist influences in a socialist and officially non-aligned educational framework. The study offers valuable insights into how educational materials reflected broader ideological, methodological, and institutional dynamics. It also contributes to the historiography of English language teaching in Yugoslavia, offering a historical perspective on how ideological positioning and pedagogical priorities influenced the development of English teaching in the region

    No full text
Several studies have highlighted the complexity of medical language, which can prevent non-experts from understanding it, and the need to overcome this problem by developing a simplified variety of this language. This contribution aims to describe the simplification attempt that we carried out within the framework of the European research project ExaMode. In this article we analyze the terminological work that we conducted based on the study of authentic medical reports in Italian on four pathologies. The first step was to extract the terminology contained in these reports, followed by the collection of terminological data and the identification of the simplified variants of the different terms. We then describe the three simplification methods that we applied to the terms extracted from our corpus, namely substitution with a popular equivalent, decomposition by definition and hyperonym juxtaposition. Since the simplification of medical language can also be of interest for specialised translation, when the information is transmitted in a multilingual context, we applied the three simplification methods not only to Italian terms, but also to their French equivalents. Moreover, we collected all these data in bilingual terminology records organised according to the model of the multilingual and multifunctional resource TriMED. We then show the results of our whole study through a series of examples and emphasise the need to maintain coherence in the simplification choices of semantically related terms, so as to enhance comprehension even more. Finally, we emphasize the need to continue to enrich our data collection and to test our simplification suggestions to evaluate their effectiveness and make possible improvements.Several studies have highlighted the complexity of medical language, which can prevent non-experts from understanding it, and the need to overcome this problem by developing a simplified variety of this language. Studi su Max Weber (1956-1965): Introduzione di Maurizio Ricciardi e Pierangelo Schiera

    No full text
In his essay on Max Weber, Toni Negri reconstructs with extreme precision and punctuality the debate that removed him from the hitherto dominant exclusively methodological reading. Weber’s political problematics, his relationship with Nietzsche, the complicated modern dialectic between the rationality of institutional structures and the ever-possible irrationality of political action emerge completely.

    No full text
The article aims to present, through a case study, a possible methodology for creating an open-access digital dictionary from an existing print edition. Specifically, it describes the digitization process of the Latin dictionary published by Italo Lana in 1978 by the Paravia publishing house. From this dictionary, entries related to the semantic domain of nature in the ancient world have been extracted. The content of the entries has been enriched through the study of literary works, and the reflections derived from this analysis are reflected in the dictionary’s encoding. The approach to the text is based on the study of best practices currently adopted in digital lexicography and seeks to align with the principles of FAIR data production.

Voci dall'Inferno is a research project of the University of Pisa, directed by Professor Marina Riccucci (University of Pisa) since 2016, with the support of Dr. Angelo Mario Del Grosso (CNR-ILC, Pisa). The project has two principal objectives: a) digitizing and encoding through XML-TEI the first digital corpus of non-literary testimonies that survived the concentration camps, including written and oral sources; b) identifying, quantifying, and evaluating the presence of Dante's lexicon and allusions within these testimonies. The research is based on the assumption that many survivors, regardless of their background, adopted Dante's lexicon, particularly from the Inferno of the Divine Comedy, to express the experiences of the Lager. The project focuses on non-literary testimonies, a textual typology through which those who lived the Lager describe their experiences in different forms ranging from oral (audio and video sources) to written (diaries, letters, memoirs). Each typology has structural, functional and semantic differences that must be identified and appropriately represented during the encoding process. The construction of the digital corpus makes it possible firstly to collect, encode and preserve non-literary testimonies, and secondly to use computational tools and methods to study, analyse and deepen these sources. The Voci dall’Inferno Web application allows to catalog, exploit, analyse and query all the available testimonies. Among the main functionalities, the application provides users to read each encoded testimony and to access statistics about the phenomena characterizing the primary source, which were extracted during the encoding phase. The application also makes it possible to highlight the presence of Dante's lexicon both within individual testimonies and across the entire corpus. Part of the paper illustrates the results of the work carried out by Elvira Mercatanti for her Master's Thesis in Humanistic Informatics.
