What Is This Thing Called Mentoring?
Mentorship is an important academic formative activity with origins in medieval universities. It represents a form of collaborative self-learning that connects a professor with a student in the pursuit of knowledge. In the mentoring process, university life is replicated. The mentor needs the disciple to project their academic vocation beyond themselves. The student needs the mentor to academically channel their concerns and abilities. Although they need each other, their interest is selfless because their goal is knowledge, which transcends both of them
From Archives of Lost Architecture to AR. Canonica’s Farmhouses from the XIX Century to the Present Day
The tangible and intangible traces of our heritage are the means for reconstructing the image of our history; in the context of today's technological advancement VR and AR are pivotal tools for reconstructing and narrating this reality. The pervasiveness of 3D reconstruction, however, requires reflection: how do we validate the products of these techniques within a broader scientific society, and how do we consider reconstructions of our heritage appropriate? In the case study here presented we will deal with the reconstructions of some rural complexes in the Park of Monza that no longer exist because they were demolished in the last century; these rural buildings had been built with specific functions to support the park and the life of the royal palace, which had lost their reason to exist when the productive life of the court had ceased. However, the hand that had built them had left several realizations that have come down to us, making the digital reconstruction with a strong hypothesis of verisimilitude
In parliamentary regimes, war involves the responsibility of advice addressed to the representatives of a sovereign people. In 1982, Margaret Thatcher suggests the UK’s armed intervention in the Falklands War, winning the parliament’s vote in favor. She does so with a speech animated by the place of the irreparable «there is no alternative». In this article, I will analyze the shift from a conflict-based language to the rhetoric employed by the Iron Lady throughout an actual war for the purpose of maintaining popular consensus and support, with a special focus on the famous speech delivered in the House of Commons on April 3, 1982, the day after the invasion, in which she communicates all the risks involved in the war by announcing the outbreak of hostilities with Argentina.
Giacomo Casanova in tre libri
In the last decade, Casanova studies have produced a renewal, especially in France, ranging from the two Gallimard (2013-2015) and Laffont (2013-2018) editions of the autobiography to that of the family correspondence (Champions 2022). This intervention, reviewing three volumes dedicated to Casanova in 2024, identifies the main itineraries of Casanova criticism in Italy.
Several studies have analysed multilingualism in the texts by Italian writers with migratory background, and explored their potential for teaching Italian to foreign students. However, limited research has examined their effectiveness from the perspectives of teachers and students, and in relation to multilingual education. Moreover, studies on Italian teachers abroad have primarily focused on state teachers, with less attention given to those working in other institutions like the Dante Alighieri Society. On this basis, the present study explores the perceptions of 19 teachers and 40 students from five committees of the Dante Alighieri Society in Argentina during a professional development intervention on multilingual education and texts by Italian women writers with migratory backgrounds. The research adopted a mixed-methods approach, followed a longitudinal multiple-case study design, and included an action research project. Data were collected through pre- and post-training questionnaires, teachers’ diaries, the researcher’s diary and students’ questionnaires. The findings revealed positive changes in teachers’ beliefs, training needs, and teaching practices, supported by favourable students’ feedback. By the end of the course, teachers reported increased awareness, competence, and motivation to value students’ entire linguistic repertoires using innovative teaching approaches and resources that reflect the multilingual and multicultural identity of contemporary Italian society.
An ecostylistic investigation of the online communicative practices within grassroots environmental activism in India
A corpus of nineteen posts collected from the social media platform X was analysed using an integrated theoretical and methodological approach. By combining ecostylistics with ecolinguistics, multimodal critical discourse analysis and multimodal studies, the study investigates the online communicative practices of the grassroots environmental movement #SaveBuxwahaForest, in order to gauge their stylistic traits and communicative strategies, functions and effects. The contribution will also explore the link between environmental activism and protection of indigenous peoples’ rights. The analysis shows that background knowledge about (post)colonial policies towards – or against – indigenous peoples in the Indian subcontinent is necessary to fully decode more than one text in the corpus; that verbal and non-verbal figurative language and non-conventional oppositions are major stylistic traits in the digital communication of this environmental movement; that engagement, mobilisation and persuasion are their main communicative functions; and that most of the strategies used are beneficial rather than ambivalent or destructive, as per Stibbe’s ([2015] 2021) classification
L'Apprendimento della Frazione: Suggerimenti Didattici dal Passato
This article shows how man throughout history has come to attribute to the concept of fraction all the meanings that have been given to it, according to the classification carried out by Kieren (1975, 1980). We want to show how knowledge of the evolution of mathematical discourse (Sfard, 2015) over the course of history has also allowed an evolution in mathematical meanings. This is certainly useful for reflections and considerations on teaching if one wants to consider the parallelism between the development of thought in man on a psychological level and the historical evolution of humanity's thought.
Generative design recommendations for the historical Mardiṅ High School and Gaziṗaşa Primary School buildings, Turkey
The genetic algorithm (GA) is inspired by natural selection, emphasizing the survival of the fittest. In GAs, data is encoded as genes, and optimal solutions are achieved through crossover and mutation operations on these genes. This study focuses on a key issue in re-functionalizing buildings, where facade elements designed without sustainability concerns become problematic. The design approaches for interventions in historic buildings remain a point of debate in architectural conservation and restoration. This study examines the facade changes due to functional transformations in a historic educational building, using GA as a generative system approach. The research specifically suggests new door and window typologies suited to the functionalization process of traditional buildings in historical settings. Genetic algorithms and shape grammars were the main methods employed. A field study applied GA to propose new door and window types with compatibility values. The analysis focused on a historical high school in Mardin (Turkey), generating alternative joinery designs. Thirty window and fifteen door typologies were developed, and while the original building’s facade openings maintained their traditional form, some annex additions lacked conformity. It is thought that this study should be a methodology that can be used in the production of exterior joinery typologies in the additions or completions to be made in the process of re-functioning in many different cities, especially in the historical texture, to protect sustainability. It is believed that this approach will contribute significantly to conservation efforts in cultural heritage buildings, offering a reference for restoration practices.
Microclimatic study of the iconic cells in the Santa Catalina monastery, Arequipa, Peru
The Monastery of Santa Catalina in Arequipa is among Peru’s most significant and well-preserved historical monuments. It comprises primarily residential cells occupied by cloistered nuns of the Dominican order. This study conducts a microclimatic assessment of four emblematic cells and the main cloister, focusing on thermal, lighting, and acoustic characterization to evaluate habitability based on international standards. Environmental conditions were monitored from February to August 2024 using temperature and relative humidity sensors, along with digital lux and sound level meters. The data were analysed according to Fanger’s thermal comfort model. Results indicated PMV values between -0.19 and 0.11, corresponding to near-neutral thermal perception within the comfort zone. PPD values (excluding Cell D) ranged from 5% to 8%, with an average of 6.5%, aligning with Categories I and II of ISO 7730. Cell D, however, recorded a PPD of 16%, exceeding ASHRAE 55 thresholds, indicating non-compliance with acceptable thermal comfort standards
