Due to low levels of student engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic, elementary school students suffered significant learning losses, which served as the driving force behind this research. Teachers should be the key to solving problems. This research aims to measure how much influence the competence of professional elementary school teachers has on student engagement in Indonesia. This research uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design and survey method. Data collection was carried out through teacher professional competency and student involvement questionnaires, with data sources coming from elementary school teachers and students in the western, eastern, and central regions of Indonesia. Samples were taken using the cluster random sampling technique. Quantitative data analysis was used with descriptive statistical stages, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and comparative analysis. The results of the hypothesis test also show that professional competence in the aspect of understanding content and understanding the curriculum has a significant influence on student engagement, while in the aspect of understanding student character, it does not have a significant influence. These results make an important contribution to teachers' ongoing professional development. Aspects of content development and curriculum development are recommended as priorities for self-development

The research instruments were questionnaires and in-depth interviews. The data were analyzed descriptively, which showed that i) In general (98%) students have high expectations to study and work in Germany, for example, following the "Ausbildung," ii) 98% of students realize that reading and listening are ways to broaden horizons, enrich vocabulary, and avoid misunderstandings in both one-way and two-way communication; and iii) Students' cognitive perceptions of reading and listening skills contribute to their positive attitudes towards improving these receptive skills; this finding shows that positive perceptions and high expectations of students are inversely proportional to their receptive abilities

Use and forms of metadiscourse features in COVID-19 Malaysian news

Metadiscourse features are fundamental for coherence and cohesion to be achieved by the writers in the texts. Writers might have employed metadiscourse widely, but they might have used it incorrectly, causing the texts to be disjointed. Numerous studies have been carried out in various academic contexts in the use of metadiscourse. However, there are still limited studies in news settings. Hence, the most common types, functions, and forms of metadiscourse features in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) news are identified through Dafouz-Milne’s model. Fifteen COVID-19 news articles were collected from The Star and The Edge, respectively from November 2021 to March 2022. The study is conducted to examine the comparison between textual and interpersonal functions and their forms. This is done to examine the engaging content in COVID-19 news from The Star or The Edge to create awareness for the journalists. The findings revealed that interpersonal metadiscourse was used more than textual metadiscourse for The Star, but textual metadiscourse was used more than interpersonal metadiscourse for The Edge. The findings also displayed the significance of metadiscourse in COVID-19 news, and a glossary of metadiscourse forms in COVID-19 news would expose the COVID-19 journalists and practitioners to the employment of metadiscourse

This study looked at the effectiveness of differentiated learning in enhancing students' mathematical outcomes by incorporating varied content, processes, and products. Employing a mixed-methods experimental design, the research hypothesized that differentiated instruction significantly influences students' performance in mathematics exams. The differentiation strategy involved altering the level of support in group discussions (process), adjusting the material's difficulty (content), and modifying the nature of student tasks (products). The participants comprised sixty-five fifth-grade students from public elementary schools. Data collection utilized interviews, document analysis, observations, and test questions, with the t-test and paired sample t-tests comparing pretest and post-test scores to assess the impact. The findings revealed that differentiation in content, process, and product significantly enhances student mathematical achievements, thereby supporting the initial hypothesis. This suggests that teachers should tailor instruction by varying the structure, support, and autonomy of task completion and product creation. Future research should expand the application of content, process, and product differentiation to a broader sample, including different mathematical materials and extending to high schools, to further validate these results and explore additional educational contexts
