    The characteristics of efficacious leader in higher education: A literature review

    University is a remarkable institution which is always expected to change the world through its constantly innovative technology and science advancement and civilization promotion. Academic institution relies on its efficacious leader with vision and implementation to fully accomplish its missions. However, limited attention goes to this crucial leader’s requirements and characteristics, even faculty members in the higher education institutions studiously conduct research for external organizations. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis addressing innovative academic leader’s characteristics based on the current global situation, university mission, and unique culture. Finally, this article concluds the competencies and characteristics of efficacious academic leader demands in this changing era: envisioning the institutional future, integrating social resources with reciprocity, modeling the way with morality and integrity, executing university missions with professions and humanity, empowering team members with full support, and inspiring students with humanity. Those integrated characters could effectively guide faculty members for their future self-development, and contribute to achieving university mission on science development, producing high-quality human resources, and contributing of the human civilization promotion. This conclusion retrospectively raises further suggestions for future study, how faculty members build these characters considering the unique and complex situation of interpersonal and external factors within the university

    Problem-based learning methods: Is it effective for developing madrasa teacher social competence in teaching?

    Developing social competence of madrasa teachers is increasingly popular in the classroom, but of these teachers, mixed results (without clear reasons) are reported. This study aims to see if increasing the use of problem-based learning (PBL) by madrasa aliyah or senior high school teachers in Indonesia increases their social competency in education. This study employed a quasi-experimental technique and data from PBL intervention program to investigate how PBL is connected with teacahers’ social competency and was analyzed using a t-test. In general, the social competence of madrasa teachers is solely treated as a predictor of the practice of teaching Islamic religious education. Still, we discovered that the greater use of PBL in learning can favorably affect the social competence of madrasa teachers. PBL is positively associated with student involvement and teaching in learning among the madrasa teacher social competency subscales. However, according to data analysis, students’ favorable responses to Islamic religious education learning practices can moderate the link between PBL and the social competency of madrasa instructors. This study has significance for the PBL model’s growth in strengthening the social competency of madrasa teachers learning Islamic religious education

    Development of academic achievements using inquiry-based learning together with educational games

    The objectives of this action research were: i) To develop learning achievement in basic science subjects of grade 8 students who received an inquiry-based learning (IBL) management system combined with an educational game on the topic of solutions to pass the requirement of 70%; and ii) To study the satisfaction of grade 8 students toward the use of IBL together with an educational game. This was a classroom action research study with a target group consisting of 14 grade 8 students in the first semester of the 2022 academic year in a public school located in Northeast Thailand. The research tools were eight learning management plans, an IBL questionnaire, an educational game about the solution, a learning achievement test, an interview form, and a satisfaction questionnaire. The statistics used were mean, standard deviation, and percentage. The result showed that the mean was 14.93, and the standard deviation was 1.44, which passed the criteria of 70%, which is in the level of satisfaction

    Create multiple-choice tests based on experimental activities to assess students' 21st century skills in the heat and heat transfer topic

    Currently, we are facing the rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT) that characterizes the 21st century. Challenges, problems, life, and careers in the 21st century can be successfully faced if we master 21st-century skills. However, nowadays it is still very rare to develop a 21st century skill measurement model, so it is necessary to develop test instruments to measure 21st century skills. The development of test instruments to measure 21st-century skills in Indonesia is still very open, with attention being paid to the clarity of the instrument in describing real phenomena and complete data as material for problem solving. Based on the description above, the researchers developed a multiple-choice test based on experimental activities to measure students’ 21st century skills, which are creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication (4Cs) in heat and heat transfer using research and development (RD) methods with the analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate (ADDIE) stage. Development begins with conducting literature and field studies, designing and making videos of experiment activities, compiling open-ended questions, distributing them to 12th graders of science, analyzing answers based on references, developing answer options, developing multiple-choice tests, conducting validation by experts, and testing limited to students. The product of this research is expected to be used by educators and students for independent learning activities or as an example to develop multiple choice tests based on experimental activities to measure 21st century skills in other physics materials and other subjects

    Student’s commitments and preferences in online learning

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, the learning was conducted by online system. The objective of the research was to understand the commitments and preferences of students in online learning. A total of 516 students participated in filling out an online questionnaire. The data were analysed descriptively referring to the critical success factors (CSFs). Based on the research result, there were three most dominant obstacles, they were: i) Internet interference (42.71%); ii) Limited quota (24.49%); and iii) Other activities (22.92%). There were students who did not attend full-time (22.45%). The weak commitment was boredom (2.04%) and feeling that they understood the module (5.10%). There were students who do not study full-time, only filling out the attendance list (53.1%). A small number of students (2.04%) fill out the attendance list and upload assignments as a top priority. According to this research, 46.7% of students liked online learning and 39.7% did not like it. In addition, 42.83% of students were bored. It means that about 60% of saturation comes from like-dislike preferences. The remaining 40% are influenced by other factors. The students’ commitments and preferences are influenced by many factors. Those who force themselves to learn ineffectively will be at risk of learning loss

    Next generation science standards assessment for Java coastal students

    In the 21st-century, we need a generation who can read and face the challenges of the times. The research aimed to master patterns of science with the next generation science standards (NGSS) standards of junior high school students in north coastal areas of Java Island. The research method is quantitative expose-facto and subjects were 228 students determined by purposive sampling. The students who come from Tegal, Pekalongan, Pati and Demak Regencies north coastal Java Island, Indonesia. The results showed a significant difference between the achievement of students in Tegal, Pekalongan, Pati, and Demak Regencies (p=0.012; ∝=0.05). Based on the analysis of variance (ANOVA) test, there was a significant difference between the groups of students’ achievements in mastery of science oriented NGSS. It can be concluded that the achievement among students from four different regions is quite significant. Students from families with middle and upper economic levels have low achievement but students with low economic levels have high academic achievement

    Assessing ideal teacher’s personality: Students’ perspective and expectations

    The ideal teacher can reflect on self-development to form a personality that fits the needs of students. Teachers who have achieved a perfect personality figure have a greater chance of success in transferring knowledge and in the student education process. The need for an ideal teacher figure can be a reference for prospective teachers to develop themselves from the beginning of their education. Based on these needs, this study identified the ideal teacher figure based on the student’s perspective. This research design used a survey research design in the quantitative method. The research subjects consisted of 240 students spread across the East Java, Indonesia. The data collection instrument used the student version of the teacher’s personality test. Analysis of the research data was carried out in a statistical-descriptive. The results showed that the four strongest personalities most expected of students were caring, humble, responsible, and patience. Teachers’ ideal personalities help them provide services that align with students’ self-development needs. Suggestions for further research are identifying ideal teacher personalities based on other points of view, including senior teachers, student teacher candidates, and society in general

    The YouTube-assisted discovery learning model: Improving students’ cognitive learning outcomes and critical thinking

    The quality improvement of human resources in the society 5.0 era in the 21st century is closely related to technology, and one of the ways this can be achieved is by using YouTube. Therefore, this research determined the differences in student cognitive learning outcomes and critical thinking before and after applying the YouTube-assisted discovery model in German Language Education Study Program at Pattimura University, Indonesia. A pseudo-experiment a pretest and posttest unequal control group design was used to obtain 20 2nd semester students who took the course Strukturen und Wortschatz zur Aufbaustufe A2.1. Furthermore, the sample determination used a proportional sampling technique. Data collection was done using the instrument in the form of essays tests to determine the cognitive learning and critical thinking outcomes, questionnaire sheets, and interviews. The paired T-test showed a value of p=0.000α=0.05, indicating significant differences in cognitive learning outcomes and critical thinking skills before and after applying the YouTube-assisted discovery learning model. This was confirmed by an increase in the cognitive test scores and critical thinking of students after applying the learning model. Therefore, the results can be applied to other concepts in German language learning

    The potential of the discovery learning model integrated the reading, questioning, and answering model on cross-cultural high school students’ problem-solving skills

    This study aims to test the discovery model integrated with the reading, questioning, and answering (RQA) model. This research is a quasi-study which involves the second semester XI grade students of state senior high school (SMA) Negeri in Situbondo as subjects. The number of students who studied was 160 people from four different classes in the 2018/2019 academic year. Sampling is done by class equality test. Each class is taught with a different model, for each class is grouped again based on the culture of residence of students, namely coastal students, urban and mountain students. Researchers used Ancova to test the research hypothesis followed by the least significant difference (LSD) test. The results showed that: i) RQA’s integrated discovery learning model is able to improve students’ problem-solving skills compared to the original model; ii) Culture has a significant role in shaping students’ problem-solving skills, with the use of the same model given to students who have a background a different background will get different results; and iii) Learning in school and in the environment is an interrelated factor in shaping students’ thinking patterns and problem-solving skills. Discovery learning model integrated learning RQA model is a combination of effective models to be applied to students who are trained with challenges where nature teaches them to think and act appropriately and quickly

    The effect of self-education on teachers’ competitiveness

    Lifelong learning skills and building competencies necessary for teachers’ competitiveness are urgent issues. This work aimed to study the relationship between teachers’ self-education and competitiveness. The research method used a questionnaire survey of teachers and principals of general secondary education institutions, as well as the method of comparison and mathematical methods. The results showed that there was a relationship between teachers’ motivation factors for independent lifelong learning, directions and sources with the achieved results of self-education was established. According to the framework of competitive competencies, the teacher’s qualities’ dependence on motivation, directions, sources and results of self-education was also revealed. The results of this study can be helpful as they arrange knowledge and research methods of the self-education process, taking into account motivation, directions, sources, and outcomes. Therefore, teachers should engage in self-education throughout their professional life to improve their competitiveness. They should also constantly update their knowledge of the fields related to teaching. They must develop synchronously with the evolution of science and technology and have a creative approach to learning. Teachers should supplement their knowledge of subject teaching methods, psychology, and health care. Further research should focus on other factors influencing improving teachers’ competitiveness
