The positive emotions: Positive perception and social well-being levels of the university students
A positive perception situation positively increases the person’s worthiness, self-confidence and perspective towards time. The current study determined the relationship between the positive perception and social well-being levels of students during the COVID-19 quarantine period. The study group consisted of 236 students, 110 females and 126 males (mean age=21.30±1.99). Positive perception scale and social well-being scale were used. Skewness-kurtosis normality distribution test was used to determine whether the measurements are suitable for normal distribution. Skewness-kurtosis technique showed normal distribution in all dimensions according to the technique. In the analysis of the study data, Pearson product moment correlation analysis with descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance or MANOVA analyzes scores were performed to determine the relationship between positive perception and social well-being. As a result, it is understood that students have over mid-level of positive perception and mid-level social well-being levels. According to the results of the correlation analysis, it was concluded that there was a positive and meaningful relationship between the social well-being and sub-dimensions of the positive perception scale
Does self-concept affect mathematics learning achievement?
Students who study at home certainly affect their self-concept. Their study found that knowledge of distance learning affects the perceived usefulness of this process. This study described self-concept has an influence on learning achievement in mathematics. The type of research used in this study was descriptive quantitative research to determine the relationship between students’ self-concept and learning achievement in mathematics. This research was conducted in class 8 of State Junior High School (SMPN) 1 Palasah, Indonesia with 151 students as respondents. The self-concept data was obtained from a study questionnaire that had previously estimated its validity and reliability. This analysis is used to explain the data in the form of standard deviation, average, and low score. Self-concept is categorized into three categories (high, medium, and low). Self-concept is categorized into two kinds, namely positive self-concept, and negative self-concept. Categorization of self-concept can also be divided into three kinds. A high self-concept is also called a more positive self-concept, a moderate self-concept is also called a positive self-concept, and a low self-concept is also called a negative self-concept. Therefore, when students have a positive self-concept, it affects learning achievement positively as students needhaveaves to have a self-concept in learning mathematics
The effect of ex-add learning techniques on critical thinking skills and pedagogic competence of Islamic education students
This study aimed to determine the effect of explain-analysis-doing-discussion or known as ex-add learning techniques on critical thinking skills and pedagogic competence of Islamic religious education students at State Islamic University (UIN) Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi and at UIN Raden Fatah Palembang, Indonesia. The approach used quantitative with quasi-experimental techniques. The number seen in this study was 31 students from UIN Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi. The data were obtained using tests, namely pretest, and posttest. The test instrument was in the form of multiple-choice questions, each consisting of 40 questions. Data analysis was carried out using percentage techniques, N-gain analysis, and a T-test. Based on the data and discussion that has been done, it can be concluded that the ex-add technique in ‘learning methods and strategies’ can increase critical thinking skill (CTS) and pedagogic competence (PC) respectively by 78 .23% in the ‘high’ category and 59.81% in the ‘medium’ category. This is reinforced by the results of the T-test that both variables obtain a value (2-tailed) of 0.0000.05. This means that there is an average difference between the pretest and posttest scores for each variable. In other words, it can be said that the increase in student CTS and PC after participating in learning with the ex-add technique is significant
Perception of distance learning among undergraduate medical students during COVID-19 pandemic
In response to the newly emerging coronavirus disease or COVID-19 pandemic and its profound consequences on the world, many changes have been made to medical education. It includes teaching and learning methods that ensure the educational process’s success. The Andalas University Faculty of Medicine, Indonesia had to implement new online teaching strategies. This study examined how medical students perceived online education during the COVID-19 outbreak. The study is cross-sectional, employed online questionnaires. The response was that most students prefer face-to-face learning in practicum and clinical skills, which require hands-on methods to improve student skills. Half the students were satisfied, and several were neutral about distance learning. The student who agrees that the lecturer is active and has the expertise and knowledge for the class is more satisfied with distance learning (p0.001). The student who agrees about the platform quality, understandable learning guide, and facility from faculty has a higher level of satisfaction with distance learning (p0.001). This study concluded that a medical student at the Andalas University Faculty of Medicine was mainly satisfied with the institution’s response to the pandemic. However, medical faculty must evaluate and improve the quality of education in online learning
Effects of technology-integrated formative assessment on students' conceptual and procedural knowledge in chemical equilibrium
The impacts of a technology-integrated formative assessment technique on students' conceptual and procedural knowledge in studying chemical equilibrium are studied in this study. To attain the purpose, a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest strategy nested with a qualitative study method was adopted. The study has three groups: two experimental and one comparative. A random sample strategy was utilized to select two intact classes for treatment and one intact class for comparison groups. Data was collected using the chemical equilibrium conceptual test, the procedural test, and classroom observation. The data was examined using descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (one-way ANOVA, one-way MANOVA, and Pearson product moment correlation). According to the findings, technology-integrated formative assessment processes outperformed traditional techniques and formative assessment strategies alone in enhancing students' conceptual and practical understanding of chemical equilibrium. Similarly, when technology-integrated formative assessment processes are used, classroom observations show that students have a strong motivation to learn and that the instructor is more skilled than the other two teachers. Technology-integrated formative assessment processes were shown to be more effective than the other two groups in promoting students' conceptual and procedural understanding when learning chemical equilibrium
Effects of technology-integrated chemistry instruction on students’ academic achievement and retention capacity
This study determined how chemistry instruction using technology affected student achievement and retention. To achieve the goal of the study, Solomon’s four-group quasi-experimental research design was used. The one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent sample t-test were used to statistically examine the data. A one-way ANOVA analysis revealed that, for achievement and retention, respectively, the mean scores of both trial groups showed statistically significant differences from the mean scores of comparison groups F (3.161)=88.568, p0.05 and F (3.161)=14.75, p0.05). The independent samples t-test on the achievement and retention post-test mean score of the experimental and comparison groups respectively, was statistically significant (t (163)=16.05, p0.05 and t (162.09)=7.61, p0.05). Independent sample t-test shows that male and female students’ post-test scores for achievement or retention in the experimental group results was (t (42)=1.53; p0.05 and t (38)=-0.465; p0.05, respectively. This intervention has no statistically significant gender related impact on students’ achievement and retention. Thus, it is conceivable to draw the conclusion that chemistry instruction that incorporates technology enhances student achievement and retention, but its effect is gender neutral. According to recent studies, chemistry teachers and teacher training programs should use technology-integrated lessons to help students acquire and recall chemical bonding concepts
Occupational stress and marital contentment in the COVID-19 era among married tutors of colleges of education
Occupational stress has been the subject of numerous research studies conducted across the globe due to its impact on our daily life. For instance, it can have a negative impact on teachers’ psychological and normal functioning of the body at all levels as well as their performance. It can even impact adversely on their marriage and social lives as well. This study explored the relationships between occupational stress and marital contentment in the COVID-19 era. The current COVID-19 pandemic, which shook the foundations of labour, industries, and economies worldwide, has exacerbated the crisis of occupational stress among many people, including teachers. The demises, national lockdowns, and general unpredictability caused by the virus have disrupted workflow and made marriages more stressful. As a consequence, this study was based on the numerous sources of occupational stress and the association between occupational stress and marital contentment. With a sample size of 100 out of 132 married tutors from selected Ghanaian colleges of education, the research used a correlational descriptive research approach. The findings revealed that during COVID-19 married tutors faced stressful situations as a result of their expertise and talents not being fully exploited at work. Occupational stress and marital contentment were also found to be somewhat positively related (r=.28). The study also found that there were no gender variations in occupational stress (P=.156) and marital contentment (P=.108) among married tutors
Parental psychological control, autonomy frustration, and psychological well-being among boarding school adolescents
Psychological well-being is fundamental for adolescents to be adaptive and fully functioning in the environment. For adolescents who stay in boarding school, even though they are away from their parents due to boarding school rules, parents still have a role to provide support and direct their behavior through parental control. On the other hand, adolescence is a period where children learn to be detached from their parents and strive for autonomy. The present study aimed to investigate the role of autonomy need frustration as a mediating variable between parental psychological control and psychological well-being for adolescents who stayed in boarding school. A survey was completed by 318 Islamic boarding school adolescents with an age range from 12–18 years old. The findings showed that autonomy need frustration fully mediated the relationship between parental psychological control and psychological well-being. Parental psychological control causes a decline in boarding school adolescents’ psychological well-being through the feeling of autonomy need frustration. These results support further development of studies regarding the psychological well-being of adolescents, especially in the boarding school context
Psychological wellbeing of students with trait narcissism
Previous studies suggested that perceived social support (PSS) significantly contributes to psychological wellbeing (PWB), partially explained by the sense of mattering. Nevertheless, individuals with different personality might perceive social support in different ways from the other. The interaction of PSS with trait narcissism, one of the dark triad personality traits was investigated by collecting data from 141 college students who were recruited purposively and instructed to respond to the scales of PWB, PSS, mattering, and narcissism. Bootstrap analysis with 5,000 samples in 95% confidence interval was utilized to test the moderated mediation hypothesis. The results suggested that individuals with moderate-to-high narcissism levels tend to perceive social support as decreasing their sense of mattering to other people, and as they do not feel they matter, their PWB was negatively affected. Limitations, implications, and suggestions are discussed
The new e-learning adaptation technique based on learner’s learning style and motivation
E-learning has increased in popularity, especially during the COVID-19, due to its numerous advantages that allow learners to study anywhere and anytime. Therefore, recommending a list of the most appropriate learning objects for learners according to their specific needs is a great challenge for adaptive e-learning systems. In an e-learning environment, the optimum adaptive e-learning system is one that can adapt dynamically to the profile of each learner. Within that particular context, various approaches were proposed. In this article, we propose a new adaptation technique based on learner’s learning style and motivation score by using collaborative filtering technique, constrained Pearson correlation coefficient, adjusted cosine measure, and K-nearest neighbor algorithms. The proposed approach is focused on how to develop and construct an effective customized pedagogical learning scenario for learning resources, and improve the accuracy of the adaptation by choosing the most suitable learning objects for learners. Therefore, we used the dataset MovieLens100K containing 943 learners and 1,682 learning objects. Additionally, a few experiments have been conducted to validate the performance of our technique. The results indicate that taking into account the learner’s learning style and motivation score can completely satisfy the customized needs of learners and improves the quality of learning
