Computational thinking skills profile in solving mathematical problems based on computational thinking attitude
The aim of this qualitative research is to describe the thinking process as a profile of students' mathematical computational thinking (CT) skills in terms of CT attitudes. The subjects in this study were 66 junior high school students in grade IX. There were three students taken by purposive sampling based on high, medium, and low CT attitude. The main research instrument was the researcher, while the auxiliary instruments were mathematical CT ability test and CT attitude scale questionnaire. Data analysis included 3 stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The data credibility test used triangulation techniques, namely tests and interviews. The results showed that subjects with high CT attitude were able to show all indicators of CT ability, namely abstraction, problem decomposition, algorithmic thinking and generalisation and pattern recognition. However, subjects with moderate and low CT attitudes were only able to show one of these indicators, namely abstraction. Based on the results of this study, researchers will create a mathematics learning model to develop CT skills, especially for number pattern material
Ideal research adviser: senior high school students’ post-research perspectives
Research advisers play a vital role in guiding senior high school students through their research projects, which are essential for developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. This study explores the attributes that students who have completed their research projects consider essential for an ideal research adviser. Employing a qualitative phenomenological approach, semi-structured interviews were conducted with nine students from a private school in Northern Philippines. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings reveal four key themes: expertise and guidance, support and encouragement, open communication and collaboration, and fostering independence and critical thinking. These results highlight the significance of research advisers in providing both technical expertise and emotional support, which are crucial for creating a collaborative environment that promotes student autonomy. This study addresses a notable gap in the literature, offering valuable insights into high school students’ specific needs in research mentorship. Educational institutions can utilize these findings to enhance the training and effectiveness of research advisers, ultimately improving the research experience and outcomes for students
Examining the effect of LENS exploration and navigation stations on students’ gain score in bio-inspired optics
The study examines the impact of lens exploration and navigation stations (LENS) activity on students’ academic performance in bio-inspired optics, focusing on the gain score, to provide empirical evidence on its effectiveness in fostering deeper comprehension and engagement. The design of the study is quantitative research and uses a pretest-posttest control group in a quasi-experimental approach. The design makes it possible to compare the LENS activity’s efficacy with the traditional method of teaching by comparing the students’ pre- and post-test scores. The researcher chooses one class comprising 56 students from academic track, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) strand where random assignment was used to determine the treatment group and control group (N=28). The study utilizes dependent sample comparing pretest and posttest scores, and independent sample comparing posttest mean scores between experimental and control groups. The study found that there is a significant difference in post-test scores between the experimental group using LENS activity and the control group using traditional teaching methods. The study indicates that LENS activity significantly increased students’ academic performance in understanding bio-inspired optics, demonstrating its effectiveness in enhancing learning outcomes and deeper understanding of the subject. This highlights the importance of activity-based learning (ABL) in enhancing learning outcomes
Evaluating impact of digitalization on higher education quality
This research employs the spherical fuzzy analytic hierarchy process (SFAHP) to prioritize key factors shaping the higher education quality in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam within the context of increasing digitalization. Through a structured hierarchy encompassing criteria such as accessibility of digital resources, adaptability and innovation, pedagogical integration, student engagement, and technological infrastructure, a novel decision-making approach was applied in this study to evaluate the relative importance of these facets, using in-depth expert interviews. The findings underscore pedagogical integration and student engagement as pivotal, indicating the essential role of innovative teaching methodologies integrated with technology. Additionally, accessibility of digital resources emerges as critical, emphasizing the imperative of equitable access to technological tools for diverse student demographics. Lower-ranked criteria such as adaptability and innovation and technological infrastructure, though deemed less critical, are foundational for fostering an agile, innovative, and technology-empowered educational ecosystem. The implications drawn from these findings provide a strategic direction for policymakers and educational stakeholders, aiming to enhance the quality, accessibility, and relevance of higher education in Vietnam’s dynamic digital landscape. This framework could be expanded to different educational contexts to effectively integrate technology in learning environments
Factors contributing to pre-service teachers’ reluctance to specialize in early primary education
This study identifies different factors that contribute to Bahraini pre-service teachers’ interest to specialize in early primary education. The sample of study comprised 108 year one and 49 foundation students enrolled in Bahrain Teachers College at the University of Bahrain. A stratified random sampling technique was used to insure the representation of all students from the foundation and the 1st year level. Results of the study showed that the most significant factors contribute to the pre-service teachers’ lack of interest in choosing early primary education specialization were, work environment factors such as classroom and school environment, early primary school students-related factors, personality-factors which relate to pre-service teachers’ personal qualities, and social factors such as lack of recognition, society and the influence of friends and colleagues. School administrators and decision makers can use the findings to improve the working conditions and environment in early primary education. The findings of the study provide baseline knowledge and data, empirical findings, and recommendations that can benefit administrators and Ministry of Education to improve the working conditions and environment in early primary education teaching profession
Predicting mathematics teaching anxiety from mathematics performance and mathematics anxiety
This study aims to identify the predictors of mathematics teaching anxiety among Filipino preservice elementary teachers. This research utilized a descriptive-correlational research design. Data were obtained through a descriptive survey from 145 students, selected using stratified random sampling from a state university in Central Luzon, Philippines. The study administered the adopted mathematics anxiety scale-UK, the mathematics teaching anxiety scale, and a mathematics test. According to our findings, mathematics performance and mathematics teaching anxiety were negatively correlated. On the other hand, a positive correlation emerged between mathematics anxiety and mathematics teaching anxiety. Furthermore, this study employed stepwise regression analysis. Our results showed that “mathematics evaluation anxiety”, a parameter of mathematics anxiety significantly predicts respondents’ mathematics teaching anxiety. Examining the predictors of mathematics teaching anxiety is crucial for improving teacher preparation, enhancing teaching quality, and creating a positive learning environment
Differentiated instruction in higher education: the experience and perceptions of five academics
The increasing diversity of students in higher education presents numerous advantages for the sector, yet it also imposes substantial challenges for educators. This study explored the experiences of five academics across two countries as they strive to implement differentiated instruction (DI) to accommodate the diverse needs of students. The primary objective is to identify five aspects of DI implementation, namely teaching strategies, challenges, strategies to overcome challenges, methods to evaluate, and educators' perceptions. The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing semi-structured interviews for data collection. The results of the study revealed that educators agreed that implementing DI requires quite a lot of resources from educators, such as time for preparation and planning, effort, and commitment. On the other hand, they also struggle with other obligations as administrators in their workplace. Experienced and junior educators employed distinct methods to address challenges, with the former utilizing forward planning and the latter concentrating on refining their skills in DI. Despite these variations, there is a common shared understanding among all educators that although implementing DI poses challenges, it remains both manageable and beneficial within the diverse higher education environment
Issues and challenges in the implementation of micro-credential language courses: educators’ perspectives
Micro-credential language courses have gained significant attention in the field of language education due to their potential to offer targeted and flexible learning experiences. However, the successful implementation of these courses relies on understanding the perceptions of language educators and addressing the associated issues and challenges. This study aims to identify language educators’ perceptions of online language learning platforms and micro-credential online language learning platforms and explore the issues and challenges in developing micro-credential language courses. Employing a quantitative approach, data was collected from 30 respondents from language educators at the centre for language learning, in a public university in Malaysia. Through survey questionnaires, quantitative insights into educators’ perceptions and experiences were gathered. The survey questionnaire gathered quantitative data on educators’ perceptions and experiences. This research sheds light on language educators’ perceptions of online language learning platforms and micro-credentials while identifying the challenges inherent in developing such courses. The findings underscore the significance of addressing these challenges to ensure the effective implementation of micro-credential-based language courses within online education contexts
Impact of bibliotherapy on resilience in special needs children during divorce
Although cognitive intervention programs are used for special needs children who have difficulties such as resilience and problem solving in which their families are in the divorce process, studies on the use of bibliotherapy are very limited. It was investigated whether this assistive technique, which is thought to be both improving and entertaining, has a positive effect on the resilience and interpersonal problem-solving skills of two siblings with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning disabilities (LD). Bibliotherapy method able to improve competence capability of the children experienced process of divorce through generating an inherent mechanism over psychological, social and emotional problems they face to while reconstituting their lives as they preferred. Qualitative research method was used in the study. Questions in this method were asked about insight, catharsis, and generalization and open-ended and semi open-ended questions, activity applications of the research agenda and the problem-solving inventory for primary school children was used pre and post intervention as a checklist for data gathering tools. Chemistry laboratory management in senior high schools: a competency analysis
Laboratory management is crucial in improving the quality of chemistry learning in senior high schools. However, there has been limited research on the managerial competence of chemistry teachers in managing laboratories. This study aims to analyze the managerial competence of high school chemistry teachers in laboratory management. The study used a survey method with non-probability sampling and involved 99 high school chemistry teachers from 476 high schools in West Kalimantan Province. The results showed that the average managerial competence of these teachers was only 16.26%. Further analysis revealed that teachers' competencies in planning (19.19%), organizing (2.53%), implementing (28.08%), controlling (22.89%), and evaluating (7.32%) were significantly lacking. The findings highlight the need to improve the managerial competencies of chemistry teachers in this region. This study provides a foundation for developing a chemistry laboratory management model to enhance these competencies, contributing to better implementation of experiments and improved quality of chemistry learning in high schools
