Content and language integrated learning (CLIL) on the acquisition of writing skills in secondary education: a systematic literature review
The concept of content and language integrated learning (CLIL) for English as a foreign language (EFL) writing has been extensively investigated to aid language acquisition; however, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding its impact on a specific element of writing development. This systematic literature review aimed at exploring the impacts of CLIL on EFL writing acquisition in secondary education. Grounded in three databases (i.e., Scopus, Google Scholar, and EBSCO), 43 research articles were extracted from 2015 to 2023 with certain exclusion and inclusion criteria. Findings show that Spain has practiced CLIL the most with various outcomes of specific writing measurement using a range of methods for measuring language through CLIL impacts. However, CLIL shows a dynamic gain in the specific element of writing as it positively impacts all the outcomes of writing measurement. It is suggested that future studies use new techniques for measuring discipline-specific content in writing and focus more on measuring both the language and content dimensions of writing
Analysing influential factors in e-learning technology acceptance for digital learning effectiveness enhancement
This study aims to discover the factors that influence the acceptance of electronic learning media and its effect on the effectiveness of digital instruction. The study involved a learning management system and online tutorials using management system (MS) teams from various faculties at the Universitas Terbuka. These include the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, the Faculty of Science and Technology, and the Faculty of Law, Social Sciences, and Political Sciences. also conducted in three regional offices in Ambon, Gorontalo and Makassar, which were selected through purposive sampling. Primary data sources include participant questionnaires and interviews. Analytical methods include correlation and multiple regression analysis, with descriptive statistics used to summarize the dataset. Variable selection involves reliability and validity tests and classical assumption tests like multicollinearity. The F-test demonstrates a statistically significant and beneficial influence of utilizing e-learning media and individual ability, training, and intention to use it for digital learning success. The results of ttests and regression models provide empirical evidence supporting the significant effect of e-learning media and intention to use on the effectiveness of digital learning. However, variables related to training and ability do not show any significant influence
A viewpoint on folklore education: providing students freedom and empowerment
Oral folklore tradition is a unique phenomenon in West Borneo. This study aims to gain the lecturer's perspectives and reflection toward its implementation as a project-based activity for encouraging university students to transform local folklore into texts in English. It combines Finnegan's instructional procedure, and Gordon's synectic model and the creative state, which has been defined as creative instruction. Multiple observations and an in-depth interview with the folklore lecturer were conducted for this qualitative investigation. The lecturer is recognized as being exceptionally representative of this study employing purposive sampling under lived experience study because of his proficiency and enthusiasm. Having this creative instruction under supervision makes it clear that there is more room for the student's imagination and creativity to grow throughout this project-based activity. It gives them freedom to freely pursue their interests. Without excluding the possibilities of use in areas where there is still local folklore, this creative instruction is specifically suited for regions that are still rich in oral tradition. Further research is essential, nevertheless, as this study does not go into great detail on the perspectives and involvement among various students, the diversity of cultures and geographies, or the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI)
The role of gamification implementation in improving quality and intention in software engineering learning
Gamification can make learning more fun and engaging for students. Software engineering can utilize gamification to help students learn and improve their skills from the complexity of software engineering. This study used quantitative research to examines perceived ease of use, student satisfaction, and perceived usefulness to measure gamification quality, which can have an impact on software engineering intention, namely intention, loyalty, and participation in following and understanding software engineering materials. The data was collected based on an online questionnaire survey, 90 data were collected and then measured and analyzed using SmartPLS 3. The results showed that perceived ease of use, student satisfaction, and perceived usefulness have a significant influence on gamification quality, which also leads to a positive impact on software engineering intention. This research guides teachers and educational institutions that gamification is very successful as a learning medium to simplify complex information to be more interactive
Needs assessment: strategy of integration disaster education at elementary schools in disaster prone areas
This research was conducted to analyze integration disaster education strategies in elementary schools located in disaster-prone areas. This research is qualitative research using descriptive design. This research used interview instrument in data collection. The respondents were 23 elementary school teachers in Sleman Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The results found that the integration of disaster education is carried out through subjects, study tours, discussions, and simulations. Strategies implemented in the integration of disaster education with interesting learning media, disaster training, improvement of school facilities and infrastructure, updating school disaster documents, and cooperation with disaster management institutions. The integration disaster education model expected by teachers is in the form of a website that contains separate materials for teachers and students. The website is expected to contain simple material packaged in the form of pictures, videos, sounds, animations, games, quizzes and songs. Maximizing integration disaster education strategies can be done by improving the internal and external quality of schools. School support, cooperation with disaster management stakeholders, the active role of teachers, and the support of school principals' policies in preparing for integration disaster education learning is expected so that disaster education can be implemented sustainably
Development of multiple intelligence ability tests of basketball in high schools
The study's objectives are to i) develop a test kit to determine the ability of multiple intelligences (MI) to play basketball in high school and ii) measure a student's MI test ability in playing basketball. The method used is the development of instruments with analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE). The study subjects comprised five schools in five districts in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. With a total sample of 1029 students. The results showed i) that test kits developed to assess students' MI abilities meet valid and reliable requirements. It can be seen from the validity of the contents of V-Aiken (0.96) and the validity of the construct, namely the loading factor 0.3. With the analysis of the item classically, it detects that the level of difficulty and differentiability of the problem is good and according to the criteria; ii) the results of MI capability measurements show 55% of capabilities with the "high" category, 35% with the "medium" category, and 10% with the "low" category
PBLRQA model to the development of metacognitive awareness in pre-service teachers
Metacognition is one of the key learning skills in the 21st century, with a strong potential to help students succeed in science learning. Until now, this metacognitive awareness is less empowered by lecturers in learning. This study aimed to analyze the problem-based learning (PBL) reading-questioning-answering (PBLRQA) model's effect on metacognitive awareness in pre-service teachers. This research is a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest nonequivalent control group design. Determination of the research sample class was carried out by random sampling. Each learning model was represented by PBLRQA and PBL class. The number of classes used was 2, totaling 57 students. The instrument used was the metacognitive awareness inventory (MAI). This inventory comprised 52 statement items divided into planning, monitoring, evaluating, and revising skills. An important finding in this research is that students' metacognitive awareness in learning with PBL and PBLRQA is not significantly different. Thus, the PBLRQA and PBL models can still be used in students' science learning to encourage metacognitive awareness, so that academic success can be achieved
Science learning STEM-R approach: A study of students' reflective and critical thinking
This study aimed to i) analyse learning problems in science at boarding schools for junior high school students and ii) determine the effectiveness of science learning in the context of Islamic teachings using the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, -religion (STEM-R) approach to improve reflective and critical thinking skills. The research method applied in this study was a sequential exploratory mixed method. The research design consisted of five stages: i) qualitative data gathering, ii) qualitative data analysis, iii) quantitative data gathering, iv) quantitative data analysis, and v) data interpretation. The subjects of this study were 192 students from boarding schools and were divided into 6 groups. The research results obtained were the school, parents, science teachers and religion teachers’ vision and mission causing students to like or dislike science. An excellent teacher is viewed by students as someone who can make learning enjoyable, exhibit creativity in presenting educational material, possess the ability to motivate, link science and religion, engage in investigative activities, infuse humour, establish connections between science and everyday life, and communicate concepts effectively. Moreover, distinctions in reflective thinking and critical thinking abilities were observed between the experimental group and the control group. Learning that connects science and Islamic religion and examines STEM-R aspects is able to develop students' thinking skills
The relationship between test anxiety and pre-service teachers’ performance in quantitative research methods
The mere mention of mathematics and its related courses such as quantitative research methods drive down shivers and create anxiety among most students. However, this phenomenon has not will been addressed among preservice teachers. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between preservice teachers test anxiety and performance in quantitative research methods in education. And to achieve this purpose, a random sample of 313 preservice teachers from a teacher education University in Ghana were administered the test anxiety inventory (TAI) and the data analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed a significant inverse relationship between test anxiety and preservice teachers’ performance. Similarly, factors such as the examiner, the exam format, previous failures, examination time, presence of invigilator, and lack of adequate preparations were identified as determinants of test anxiety. In terms of coping strategies, it was revealed that respondents adopted cognitive, and educational strategies to mitigate the effect of test anxiety.
Teachers’ strategy in conducting assessments in the new normal era
Assessment is an important component of learning which aims to determine student achievement in learning. However, the pandemic has changed how assessment is carried out, prompting teachers to look for new strategies in carrying out mathematics learning assessments under any conditions, whether in normal conditions or during a pandemic. This study described the strategies used by high school mathematics teachers in assessing mathematics learning during the pandemic towards the post-pandemic period. This type of research is descriptive exploratory research with a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were three mathematics teachers, three principals, and three vice principals from a public senior high school in Yogyakarta City, Indonesia. Qualitative data were collected by means of questionnaires, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively according to Bogdan and Biklen. The results of the study reveal that the mathematics teacher’s strategy for carrying out assessments during a pandemic includes: i) determining the appropriate online assessment platform that suits the needs; ii) assessment based on student participation; iii) using various of online assessment methods; iv) prioritizing academic integrity and honesty in the assessment implementation; and v) carry out the management and reporting of data on the results of the assessment in accordance with established procedures
