    The relevance of Vygotsky's constructivism learning theory with the differentiated learning primary schools

    The purpose of this study is to analyze in depth the relevance of Vygotsky's constructivism learning theory in differentiated learning in elementary schools. Differentiated learning is an effort to adapt the learning process in the classroom to meet the learning needs of each individual. This adjustment is made by considering the interests, learning profiles, and readiness of students to improve learning outcomes. With this adjustment, students can learn according to their respective abilities and find understanding from their own experiences. On the other hand, constructivist learning theory states that learning is a process in which students can build their knowledge. One of the constructivists learning theories was proposed by Vygotsky, known as social constructivism. Vygotsky's constructivism emphasizes the interaction of interpersonal (social), cultural-historical, and individual factors as the key to human development. The constructivist theory has relevance to differentiated learning in terms of meaningful learning and student activity. Differentiated learning applies constructivist theory in learning by considering the individual characteristics of students. In addition, the concept of the zone of proximal development (ZPD) and scaffolding are highly relevant in differentiated learning that accommodates the full potential of students and considers the individual abilities of students

    Mapping chemistry learning difficulties of secondary school students: a cross-grade study

    Students' lack of interest in chemistry becomes a significant issue in chemistry learning. This may be caused by the negative perception of students about their difficulties in learning chemistry. This study aims to explore views and causes of difficulties in learning chemistry from the perspective of secondary school students. This research was designed using a survey method through a cross-grade study. The sample that participated in this study was 634 students from the Grade 10, 11, and 12 (G10, G11, and G12) of secondary school students in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, through random sampling. The data in this study were collected using the chemistry difficulties scale (CDS) and chemistry perception questions (CPQ). Statistical descriptive techniques, a one-way multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) test, and content analysis, were used to analyse the research data. The results showed that the grade somewhat affected students' views towards chemistry. They viewed chemistry as a fairly difficult subject, with stoichiometry, thermochemistry, and macromolecule being among the most challenging topics in G10, G11, and G12, respectively. These difficulties are caused by scientific language, mathematical abilities, student abilities, and teacher competence in conducting chemistry lessons. Since the students consider chemistry somewhat difficult, chemistry teachers must take appropriate strategies to overcome these difficulties

    The development of knowledge of content and teaching task instruments for pre-service mathematics teacher

    The knowledge of the materials to be taught to the students is the basic knowledge that preservice mathematics teachers should possess, as they need to prepare themselves for teaching. In order to research preservice teachers’ understanding of the subject matter and teaching skils, valid and reliable test instruments are required. Knowledge of content and teaching (KCT) is one of the tools that can be used. This research was conducted using the Plomp model. Based on the research results, it was found that the KCT task instruments are valid, reliable, and legible. The instruments were utilized in this study with several revisions to describe the content and teaching knowledge of the subjects. The results of this investigation strongly support the use of KCT instruments. This tool is crucial to implement in understanding the capability of preservice mathematics educators in planning and successfully executing math lessons. Additionally, future research should be conducted on content understanding and classroom instruction on mathematics education. Such research will be able to reveal information on the expertise and experience of prospective mathematics teachers

    Empowering teachers: a growth mindset program for enhanced facilitating learning in primary schools

    Teachers who adopt a growth mindset significantly enhance student development, facilitating learning, and continuous improvement, leading to better student learning outcomes and a more positive learning environment. This research aimed to develop a growth mindset to improve the facilitating learning skills of primary school teachers. The research utilized a development (RD) method, structured into four phases: i) analyzing components and indicators; ii) assessing needs; iii) developing the program; and iv) implementing the program. The study focused on creating training to influence teachers’ mindsets and drive changes in practice. A mixed methods design was used, with the growth mindset development program consisting of 6 modules over 120 hours. This program incorporated training or self-learning, learning through collaboration, and integrating operational practices, involving 15 volunteer teachers. Results indicated a statistically significant shift in mindset between pre-and post-intervention measures, which was sustained after three months. The program fostered a professional learning community focused on developing a growth mindset, refining teaching techniques, and enhancing student learning outcomes. Overall, the growth mindset program proved highly effective for primary school teachers, greatly expanding their knowledge and cultivating a professional learning community that positively impacts student development and facilitating learning skills of teachers

    A cross-sectional study on the secondary school students’ subjective happiness and attitudes towards mathematics

    Students’ subjective happiness and attitudes toward learning a subject matter are two factors that could affect learning. These variables are essential for successful instruction. This study ascertained students’ subjective happiness and attitudes towards mathematics of secondary school students grouped according to different variables and their relationship. The correlation of the two variables was also determined. Descriptive-correlational research was utilized in the study, and 300 randomly chosen students were chosen as participants. Using two adopted questionnaires, results showed a less happy student compared to the average person and a moderate level of attitude towards mathematics. These results are the same for all variables involved in the study, like sex, year level, family monthly income, daily allowance, and other variables. Results further showed a weak but significant positive correlation between the two variables involved. This suggests that the students’ level of happiness may be a potential factor that can influence their attitudes toward mathematics. School stakeholders may find ways to improve students’ well-being, happiness, and attitude, which could, in turn, improve mathematics performance

    CRTP: learning model for integrating STEM competencies in pre-service biology teachers

    The development of education shows the importance of integrating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in schools and preparing teachers who are ready to implement STEM in the classroom. This study aims to describe prospective teachers' perceptions of STEM competencies through the collaborative reflective teaching practice (CRTP) model in micro teaching courses. The method used was qualitative using interview assessment and questionnaire of STEM perception. This study used an experimental design conducted with 3 activities (initial test, teaching practice, and final test). The initial test and final test used a STEM perception questionnaire. Teaching practice in the form of applying the CRTP model which consists of 4 stages, namely plan, simulation, implementation, and reflection. The results of the study describe that STEM competencies develop well with the CRTP model. The questionnaire results showed that 96.2% of respondents strongly agreed that the CRTP model had proven valid for developing STEM competencies of prospective biology teachers. This research contributes to educators who prioritize meaningful learning experiences for prospective biology teachers. The authors suggest that effective STEM competencies should incorporate five main components: i) reflection, ii) collaboration, iii) integration of interdependent STEM disciplines, iv) skills related to STEM disciplines, and v) integrative STEM teaching and learning

    Challenges in Malay essay writing: a qualitative study among non-native speakers in primary school

    This research addresses challenges faced by non-native speakers in primary school, specifically focusing on the proficiency of Malay essay writing skills. A qualitative study was conducted among five primary school teachers in the Kapit area of Sarawak, specializing in Malay language. They were selected through purposive sampling to actively participate in this study, bringing their expertise and experiences to enrich the research. The study involved meticulous conduction through semi-structured interviews, and the data were analyzed using thematic analysis with NVivo 12. The results revealed pervasive issues, including i) weak writing skills, ii) poor performance levels, iii) a lack of interest in writing, iv) inadequate language proficiency, v) limited vocabulary, and vi) ineffective idea processing. This study serves as a valuable resource for future researchers by providing insights into the complex challenges faced by non-native speakers in primary school. The identified issues offer a foundation for designing targeted interventions, pedagogical approaches, and curriculum enhancements to improve the writing skills and overall academic performance of non-native speakers

    Web-based interactive media model for character building education

    This research aims to describe the learning innovation from character building learning through the Religious Moderation 360 website. The website's content includes photos of places of worship taken with a 360 camera. The research method used is phenomenology with a qualitative approach aimed to i) explain web-based learning and ii) gather student opinions on web-based learning. Data collection was done by distributing self-administered questionnaires. The research stage began with a trial questionnaire to determine the validity of the content and substance of the questions to 20 students. The valid questionnaire was distributed to 195 students from Department of Computer Science, International Business Management (IBM), and International Relations who adhere to Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and other religions. The data gathered from the questionnaire accommodated the students’ expectations of innovation in learning religion character building. The conclusion from this research is that respondents found the developed website interesting, the audio-visual material innovative, they felt motivated to learn, and were interested in learning about other religions through the website. Future research is expected to explore various opinions of religious leaders and places of worship that are the result of acculturation from various countries. Thus, learning religion also involves learning about culture

    Hitting the thesis wall: demotivation hindering graduate students’ research completion

    Research conducted by graduate students is crucial for the development of lifelong learning skills and future professional success. However, many students encounter obstacles that hinder the timely completion of their research projects and theses. The factors that impede the completion of research papers within designated timeframes have not been thoroughly investigated, resulting in a lack of understanding of certain barriers. This qualitative phenomenological study aimed to identify the demotivating factors that hinder graduate researchers from completing their research papers on time. Through thematic analysis of qualitative data from 10 purposively selected graduate students experiencing demotivation, the findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the personal, psychological, institutional, and resource-related factors that demotivate graduate researchers. Key issues include self-determination challenges, conflicting responsibilities, rigid policies, and inadequate support. These insights can guide interventions to enhance graduate student achievement, well-being, and research productivity. By addressing the diverse barriers identified, academic institutions can create a more supportive environment for graduate researchers to excel.
