Turn taking patterns, repair and adjacency pairs in an online interaction: a conversation analysis
Get PDFThe present study analyzed the use of conversation analysis (CA) in online interaction. The aim of the study is to describe the patterns of turn taking, repair, and the adjacency pairs in the online conversation. Employing a qualitative research methodology, data were taken from an online conversation about how to learn English, taking place in YouTube between a professor of English language teaching and the host who is a professor of education. The conversation was mainly in Bahasa Indonesia. The data were first transcribed in Bahasa Indonesia and translated into English. The study found some structures of exchange in the communication and the patterns of turn taking, repairs and adjacency pairs evident from the analysis of conversation. There are some patterns of turn-taking and adjacency pairs along the online conversation. The turn constructional units vary in syntactical forms. In addition, both self-initiated and other initiated-self repairs occurred. The study drew the implication of CA to language teaching. CA contributes to language teaching in terms of offering not only the authentic real-life communication, but also the authentic spoken interaction which will encourage learners to be able to produce authentic utterances
Students’ disengagement in online courses: validity and reliability of an instrument
Get PDFDisengagement is considered a significant component that affects the success, participation, and activity of the students in the online course. Reviewing the literature revealed the lack of a measurement tool for assessing students' disengagement in online courses. This study aimed to develop a scale that examines student disengagement in online courses through validation and reliability studies. The study was conducted with 772 undergraduate students who took an online course during the study. Exploratory factor analyses revealed that nine items were extracted under one factor with an eigenvalue 1. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) validated the one-factor model, showing significant factor loadings, and adequate fit indices. As a result, the scale of disengagement in online courses met the validity and reliability criteria. The disengagement in online courses scale can be used to examine the precedents and antecedents of disengagement in a variety of online learning settings
Digital storytelling: pre-service English teachers' experiences, difficulties and solutions
Get PDFThis study aimed to investigate the impact of digital storytelling on the teaching practicum experiences of pre-service English teachers (PSET) and to delve into the challenges they encountered in creating digital storytelling, along with the strategies used to overcome these challenges. This study provided deeper understanding of the impact of digital storytelling on the learning and teaching experiences of PSET. Moreover, it provided information to face obstacles in the digital storytelling creation process. A total of 30 PSET, comprising 13 males and 17 females, engaged in their sixth-semester teaching practicum, participated in this study. Self-reflection and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the data. The researcher applied thematic analysis to analyze the data obtained. The findings of this study revealed that the implementation of digital storytelling yielded positive experiences for PSET, encompassing enhancements in pedagogical approaches, self-development, and technology integration into the teaching-learning process. PSET encountered various difficulties in creating digital storytelling, including seamless integration of movement, audio, images, and animations within the narrative, crafting engaging animations and narratives, and proficiency in using diverse editing applications. Moreover, the challenges encompassed collecting and curating appropriate materials and organizing a coherent storyline aligning with the lesson plans and real-world contexts. Nevertheless, PSET proposed solutions to overcome those difficulties
Knowledge, attitude, and practice towards volunteerism: a perspective from Sultan Idris Education University
Get PDFVolunteering requires a high level of commitment to community development, especially from young people. The first study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitude and practices of university students of education regarding volunteering and the second study, analysing the differences in students’ knowledge regarding interest in volunteering. The survey method using Google form was distributed among the students of volunteer course semester 2 2022/2023 at Sultan Idris Education University. A total of 459 respondents provided the feedback. Overall, students’ knowledge about the volunteer course was excellent. Their attitudes towards volunteering activities tend to undertake activities related to their interests in terms of the types of volunteers available. Encouraging things in volunteering practice shows that students keep learning things related to volunteering, keep looking for opportunities to help others, and influence others to do it together. The analysis of students’ knowledge related to volunteering among students by interest showed that there was a significant difference in the mean of students’ knowledge by interest, where respondents’ interest in volunteering for the community was much higher than in other volunteering activities. Further studies should be conducted to better understand volunteerism among high school students who are now immersed in technology
The effectiveness of the logarithm module equipped with a Jigsaw-type cooperative model in improving learning outcomes
Get PDFThe teacher's job is to prepare learning plans, create modules, implement, assess, and evaluate. The fact that teachers don't have modules yet. As a result, the mean logarithmic learning outcome of 74.80 is below the standard of 75. It is urgent to research because there is a gap between theory, expectations, and reality. The aim is to produce a logarithmic module equipped with an effective jigsaw cooperative model. The method is the research and development (RD), analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation (ADDIE) model. There were 32 high school subjects. Data collection techniques using needs analysis instruments, and assessment instruments for material experts, teachers, and students. Collect student pre-test and post-test data. Analysis technique by calculating the mean of all module components, the mean of pre-test and post-test, and interpretation of each module component. As a result, the mean scores of material experts, teachers, and students were obtained at 92.35%, 91.45%, and 95.81% in the very good category. It was found that the mean learning outcomes of students who used the module were 90.28 and the mean of students who did not use the module was 68.40, with a difference of 25.48. In conclusion, the logarithm module is practical, and effective, and can improve student learning outcomes significantly
Gamification as an alternative to increase students’ motivation: a scoping review
Get PDFGamification is the process of adding game-like features and mechanics in non-game contexts, such as learning, training, or marketing, to make them more engaging, enjoyable, and effective. This scoping review aims to investigate the impact of gamification on student motivation and identify the most frequently used and effective elements of gamification in educational contexts. A systematic search was conducted using five databases: Emerald, Scopus, Sage, Garuda, and Google Scholar. The preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses extension for scoping reviews (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines were followed. The review included 25 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The findings suggest that gamification can positively influence student motivation and engagement. However, the effectiveness of gamification elements varies across different contexts and learners. Points, levels, and leaderboards are among the most commonly used elements, but their impact on intrinsic motivation remains debatable. The review highlights the need for further research to understand the specific factors that contribute to the success or failure of gamification in education. The insights gained from this review can serve as a foundation for developing effective gamification-based educational materials that cater to the diverse needs of learners and foster their motivation to learn

The influence of interactive educational space on the professional self-realisation of future art professionals
Get PDFThe article aims to determine the impact of a psychologically grounded interactive educational space on the professional self-realization of future art professionals. The study used the methodology “type and level of professional self-realization,” methodology for studying satisfaction, test for studying the motivation of professional activity, and methodology for self-assessment of youth career development. The sample was formed from future actors, directors, musicians, vocalists, and artists. The results indicate the effectiveness of a psychologically grounded interactive educational space for the professional realization of future specialists in the field of art. The interactive educational space that stimulates students’ reflection and motivation positively impacts the type of professional self-realization, professional motivation, assessment of future careers and the formation of academic knowledge and professional skills. At the same time, in the cases of using conventional interactive educational space, there are positive changes in the cognitive-activity component and the type of professional self-realization. The results obtained can be used to optimize the use of interactive educational space in higher education institutions to train art professionals. In future research, it is advisable to conduct a differentiated study of the impact of interactive educational space on the personality of a future art specialist
The effect of using social media and fear of missing out on emotional wellbeing in children in the digital age
Get PDFIn today's digital age, social media (SM) offers convenient access to information, social connections, and various content. Nonetheless, the utilization of SM and the fear of missing out (FOMO) phenomenon profoundly influence children's emotional wellbeing (EW). This study seeks to investigate the impact of SM usage and FOMO on children's EW in the digital era. Employing a quantitative approach, the research involves elementary school students in Jakarta, Indonesia. Cluster sampling was utilized to select a sample of 265 students. Data collection was conducted through a questionnaire designed to capture relevant variables. Analysis was performed using structural equation modeling (SEM) facilitated by the SMART-PLS 3.0 software. Findings revealed a significant significance value of 0.000 (0.0000.05), indicating that SM usage and FOMO have a positive and noteworthy effect on children's EW in the digital era. This study offers valuable insights for parents, educators, and child psychologists regarding the influence of SM on children's EW, thereby facilitating the formulation of more effective educational guidelines and strategies to assist children in managing their EW in the digital era
Kuhnian perspectives in science education: a comparative review of proponents and skeptics
Get PDFDespite the abundance of literature discussing Kuhnian views, it is rare to find studies that comprehensively compare the arguments of Kuhnian supporters and skeptics. This study aims to fill the gap by providing a comparative review and synthesis between the two groups of views using the systematic literature review (SLR) analysis technique. The researcher found 1,413 articles reduced with the standard prism protocol to 32 articles that examined Kuhn's views. Proponents support the existence of Kuhn's scientific paradigm where they not only strengthen and consider the importance of Kuhn's theory, but also expand its application to various fields, showing the flexibility and relevance of the theory in understanding the scientific revolution that occurred in various disciplines. Skeptics criticize Kuhn's views such as the ambiguity of the term "paradigm", the non-recognition of scientific revolutions that lead to scientific evolution, and the doubt of the concept of incommensurability in various disciplines. This shows that Thomas Kuhn made a great contribution to the world of scientific education because it can provoke experts to study his thoughts for the benefit of science. The findings of this study are expected to contribute to policy makers and other researchers in applying and studying Kuhn's paradigm
