    Timely adoption of Grammarly to cultivate autonomous learning culture

    Incorporating technology with linguistics has created opportunities to explore the effectiveness of grammar checkers in cultivating an autonomous learning culture among English as a second language (ESL) and English as a foreign language (EFL) learner. Even though there have been numerous studies on grammar checkers to cultivate autonomous learning culture in higher-education contexts, there are still limited studies in school settings. Thus, this study aims to explore the efficiency of grammar checkers in cultivating an autonomous learning culture among ESL/EFL school students. For this purpose, a qualitative study was conducted, and 13 students aged 16 years from a private Chinese school participated and shared their experiences through a questionnaire. The grammar checker Grammarly has been employed. The findings of this study showed that students found Grammarly easy to use and can correct their writing errors besides improving their grammatical and vocabulary knowledge. Students generally stated that Grammarly helps them to write with less dependence on teachers and helps them to learn the language autonomously. However, 6 out of 13 participants disagreed that Grammarly helps language use. Thus, it is important to know the challenges before employing grammar checkers in the school setting to cultivate an autonomous learning culture

    Exposing tech skills shaping mobile learning in cross-disciplinary English learners

    This study delves into information and communication technology (ICT) competency and mobile learning (m-learning) acceptance among Indonesian university students enrolled in English for specific purposes (ESP) programs across various disciplines, such as mathematics, health, management, and counselling guidance. Utilizing survey methodology with closed-ended questions involving a broad sample of non-English major ESP students from these diverse fields revealed over 60% competency in using m-learning platforms. The results underscore the extensive use of digital technology across campus for diverse functions like communication, creation, distribution, storage, and management. These tools have proven crucial for collaboration and social interaction among students. However, pedagogical factors significantly challenge m-learning adoption. This study contributes to the literature by offering insights into ICT competencies' impact on m-learning acceptance among cross-disciplinary ESP learners. The findings carry practical implications for educators, suggesting that understanding ICT competencies can enhance student outcomes and engagement in m-learning platforms. Future research is recommended to incorporate perspectives from students and lecturers on the influence of ICT competencies on m-learning acceptance in cross-disciplinary ESP programs

    The role of followership in enhancing teachers’ organizational commitment dimensions

    This study explores the relationship between followership and three dimensions of organizational commitment: affective, normative and continuance among primary school teachers in Sarawak, Malaysia. Research on how followership behaviours affect employee commitment is weak despite increased understanding of their role in organisational success. To fill this gap, the study surveyed 899 primary school teachers using the revised kelley followership questionnaire (KFQ-R) and the three-component model employee commitment survey (TCM-ECS). Data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The results demonstrate significant positive relationships between followership and all three commitment dimensions, with the strongest association observed for affective commitment (β=0.564, p0.001), followed by normative commitment (β=0.388, p0.001) and continuance commitment (β=0.337, p0.001). These findings suggest that effective follower behaviors significantly enhance employees’ emotional attachment, sense of obligation and perceived cost of leaving their organizations. Although this is cross-sectional research, it adds to our understanding of how followership may assist establish organizational loyalty. It also suggests that organizations may be able to increase employee commitment by teaching people how to follow others

    Impact of factors influencing the STEM career-oriented subjects choice of Vietnamese high school students

    Studying subjects in school had a relationship with students’ future career choices. However, science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields (STEM) careers are often considered to be less accessible by many children. The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors influencing the STEM career-oriented subjects’ choice of Vietnamese high school students. The survey was conducted with 1768 students in grade 10th (at the age of 16) in several high schools in 4 provinces represented for different geography regions of Vietnam by questionnaire combined with direct investigation using contact and interview methods with students. The results indicated that gender and students’ academic achievement in science studies were measured as factors to consistently and positively associate with students’ subjects choice toward STEM career orientation, accounting for other factors. The implications of this study in education are that teachers and educators should organize learning and teaching activities appropriate to male and female students in order to improve their academic achievement and their self-efficacy in science subjects. Hence, these supporting measures may foster students’ selection of STEM-related subjects to study and enhance students’ aspirations towards STEM careers

    Gamified online business simulation: enhancing student motivation in entrepreneurship

    Entrepreneurship education is growing because of innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI)-based business simulation and gamification. However, there are different responses to gamification-based learning. This study aims to identify the factors that influence learning in gamified business simulation using the self-determination theory (SDT) approach. This study uses a quantitative approach with an online survey of 160 university students learning entrepreneurship through an enterprise resource planning (ERP) based business simulation enhanced with AI and gamification elements. Data were analyzed using importance-performance map analysis (IPMA) to evaluate four primary constructs: autonomy, competence, presence, and relatedness. The analysis results show that the presence construct is fundamental and performs well. While relatedness is fundamental, its performance needs to be improved. The autonomy and competence constructs perform adequately but do not require significant changes. The results also emphasize the importance of strengthening the elements of realism and social interaction in gamified business simulations. Developers and educators should improve the presence and relatedness elements to increase student motivation and engagement. Periodic evaluations and adjustments according to student needs are also necessary to ensure the long-term effectiveness of the simulation. This research provides valuable insights for developing more effective technology-based learning methods in supporting entrepreneurship education

    Analysis of content development in chemical materials related to ethnoscience: a review

    One way to preserve culture in education is through ethnoscience-based learning, especially in chemical materials linked to various fields of science in life, including social and cultural. Ethnoscience is a process of reconstructing indigenous science knowledge with scientific science. This research aims to explore trends in ethnoscience-based chemistry learning in Indonesia and analyze the contents, focusing on topics, learning approaches and models, tools, and variables influenced. The research data collection method adopted the preferred items for systematic review and meta-analysis (PRISMA) design and obtained from 30 selected articles indicated from 2019-2024 published in journals indexed by Scopus and SINTA. Analysis results show that the process of making batik is one of the ethnoscience topics that are widely used in chemistry learning. Ethnoscience learning can also be done by combining local wisdom (culture), traditional foods, and natural phenomena of the environment. Ethnoscience learning can be integrated into various learning models, such as contextual teaching and learning (CTL), problem-based, and project-based learning (PjBL). Learning tools often used in ethnoscience-based chemistry learning are modules, evaluation instruments, and worksheets. Ethnoscience is interesting to learn because it positively affects critical thinking and creativity, cultural and conservation character, and scientific literacy

    Mathematics anxiety in mathematics education: a bibliometrics analysis

    This research is based on a bibliometric analysis of publications on math anxiety. It aims to analyze the distribution of the results of publications on math anxiety in the last ten years based on research trends and topics, reputable journals, influential authors, institutions, and productive countries. Scopus was used as a data collection database and was analyzed using the VOSviewer and Biblioshiny tools. The workflow carried out in this research consists of research design, data collection, data analysis, data visualization, and data interpretation. Three hundred twenty-one articles published from 2013 to 2023 were retrieved and read carefully. The results of the analysis show that many research studies on mathematics anxiety have been carried out in mathematics education, and this theme influences mathematics learning. The Journal Frontiers in Psychology is at the top, and the University of Barcelona is the most influential institution. The United States has significant relevance in this field. The results of this research also provide researchers with insight into the extent to which this field has been studied, and they can explore various alternatives to this major based on research trends and influential articles

    Identifying English as a foreign language students’ attitude to improving speaking skills through collaboration

    Speaking skills, being an essential part of effective communication, are significant for English as a foreign language (EFL) students in today’s globalized world, and collaborative learning, being heterogeneous, assists them with more possibilities for enhancing and practicing the skills through a supportive environment, constructive feedback, and opportunities for real-world conversations. Therefore, this study aimed to identify EFL students’ attitudes toward enhancing speaking skills in a collaborative learning environment. The researchers, to achieve the study objective, used the descriptive survey method to collect the data from a sample of 360 participants in the Preparatory Year (PY) at Najran University. The study's instruments included a closed-ended questionnaire and a semi-structured interview. The results showed students having positive attitudes toward a collaborative learning environment can highly enhance their speaking skills. In addition, the respondents’ study level did not impact their responses to enhancing speaking skills in a collaborative learning environment; however, male students showed higher attitudes than their female counterparts. Finally, the interview analysis showed that students' speaking skills can be improved in a collaborative learning environment in many ways including a supportive environment, interesting activities, and technology use. Based on the findings, the study recommends incorporating collaborative learning strategies to strengthen other language skills

    Sibling attachment inventory for senior secondary school students: standardization in Indian context

    The study aimed at exploring, confirming, and validating the factor structure of sibling attachment inventory (SAI) within the Indian cultural context. The hypothesis posits that SAI will show reliable sibling attachment measures, evaluating its psychometric properties with 250 students enrolled in Class XI within govt and private schools, selected through stratified random sampling across 10 districts of Delhi. The research unfolded in three phases: i) data collection utilizing original 25-item SAI; ii) data purification and analysis using SPSS version 23.0; and iii) verification of the factor structure through factor analysis employing principal component analysis (PCA) with varimax rotation and confirming the factor structure using AMOS. The results revealed inclusion of 23 items across three factors viz. trust, communication, and alienation, with high reliability coefficients (α) of 0.954, 0.786, and 0.621 respectively. Preliminary analysis demonstrated commendable internal consistency. This study highlights the importance of considering sibling relationships in understanding adolescent well-being, thereby addressing existing research gaps by focusing on sibling relationships among adolescents, an area often overlooked in favor of parental and peer dynamics. Thus, SAI can support the assessment of sibling-adolescent attachment, thereby helping to enhance intervention, and expanding attachment research scope beyond traditional family dynamics

    Assessing critical thinking skills in vocational school students during hybrid learning

    In the current educational landscape, the development of critical thinking abilities is becoming increasingly important, especially considering the prevalence of hybrid learning methods. This investigation aimed to evaluate the proficiency of critical thinking skills in students who are immersed in hybrid learning. A descriptive quantitative research approach was employed, utilizing observation, documentation, and critical thinking assessments to collect data from a sample of 60 students from vocational high schools. The findings highlight two main results: firstly, the majority of students demonstrate a low level of critical thinking skills within the hybrid learning context, indicating the need for improvement; secondly, various factors that influence these skills were identified. These outcomes emphasize the challenges associated with acquiring 21st-century skills and emphasize the necessity for collaborative efforts. Both educators and students must enhance their commitment to effective learning preparation, with a particular emphasis on motivation to foster improved critical thinking abilities. This research provides valuable insights for educators and policymakers who are striving to enhance the hybrid learning environment in order to better cultivate critical thinking skills in students
