Moodle and Google Classroom: a comparative study of acceptability

    Get PDF
The popularity of online learning gives rise to learning management system (LMS) development as a central medium of instruction, communication, assessment, and collaboration for flexible learning. However, different LMS platforms present different acceptability to users, making it challenging for educational institutions to choose a platform for implementation. This study used a quantitative research design to compare the acceptance scores of Moodle and Google Classroom based on the technology acceptance model (TAM). Using convenience sampling, 40 students from the City College of Davao (CCD) participated in a survey to determine the perceived usefulness (PU), the perceived ease of use (PEOU), and the overall acceptance scores of the 2 LMSs. An independent t-test was used to compare the acceptance scores after determining the normality and homogeneity of the data sets. The comparative analysis determined no significant difference between the acceptance scores of Moodle and Google Classroom. Despite the limited number of participants, the findings suggest that CCD can use either of the 2 LMSs for official implementation. The findings can also inform other institutions and help them adopt the methods and recommendations in the study. The study contributes to the growing literature on technology acceptance and LMS

    Get PDF
The Philippines government adheres to a system of Education for all (EFA). Thus, it created the alternative learning system (ALS) as an alternative system of education to reach out Filipinos who were unable to complete the prescribed basic education cycle for various reasons. This study explored the lived experiences of the persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) as enrollees of the ALS behind bars program. It utilized the trancendental phenomenology as its design and employed eight purposively chosen participants through inclusion criterion. Data was gathered through focus group discussion and analyzed using Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen framework. Three themes emerged following the statement of problem: lived experiences of the PDLs as enrollees of the ALS Behind Bars program, meaning of the PDLs’ attendance to the program, and their recommendations to further improve the delivery of the existing and prospective ALS programs intended for the PDLs. Taking things holistically, the current program is positively perceived by the PDLs. Thus, the need for the government to sustain the program to ensure the holistic transformation of the PDLs enrolled in the program through this alternative learning delivery, which, in turn, is direly needed as they eventually join the mainstream society

Students’ performance in English: effects of teachers’ leadership behavior and students’ motivation

    Get PDF
The research was conducted to determine how the leadership behavior of English teachers affects students' performance in the language and to examine how the motivation of students toward English language learning influences the relationship between the leadership behavior of teachers and the performance of their students in the language. The statistical tools used in this descriptive research study were frequency analysis, mean computation, correlation analysis, regression analysis, and mediation analysis. As the students perceive, their English teacher’s manifest leadership behavior consideration more than initiating structure. Results have shown that the students scored higher in integrative than in instrumental motivation. Both dimensions of leadership behavior positively relate to the students' integrative and instrumental motivation and English performance. This indicates that they will be motivated to learn and perform better in English no matter what dimension of leadership behavior teachers will manifest. However, regression analyses have shown different results. While integrative motivation is positively and significantly correlated to students' performance in English, instrumental motivation is not. Instrumental and integrative motivation do not mediate the effects of initiating structure on students' English performance. However, both forms of motivation significantly mediate the effect of consideration on students' English performance

    Get PDF
Technical and vocational education (TVE) in a country cannot only talk about a narrow scope in the world of education and work but also play a role in ensuring someone achieves a prosperous life socially, economically and environmentally without forgetting preparation for the next generation. This research will visualize and map the development trend of publications on sustainable development in the TVE scope worldwide and in Indonesia. The method used is descriptive quantitative and bibliometric analysis with research data taken from the Scopus database. The results of the study show that increasing research is essential for the development and efforts of the TVE community to increase the achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs). Indonesia is recorded as having only started publication in 2017, with a total publication of 42 documents until early 2024. Interestingly, there has been a decline in the number of publications in the last two years. The results of the bibliometric analysis show that research topics in Indonesia have not yet demonstrated success in linking them to the social, economic and environmental spheres. Further research is recommended to conduct a systematic literature review to identify global action program (GAPs) in sustainable development research in TVE communities

    Get PDF
In the educational landscape, educational data mining has emerged as an indispensable tool for institutions seeking to deliver exceptional and high-quality education. However, education data revealed suboptimal academic performance among a significant portion of the student population, which consequently resulted in delayed graduation. This experimental research generally aims to evaluate student graduation outcomes. Meanwhile, the specific aim is to predict student academic performance by applying the support vector machine (SVM) model based on sampling techniques. The proposed model is evaluated using datasets originating from one of the State Islamic Universities. The dataset has both on-time and delayed graduation status. The results show that the support vector machine model based on the shuffle sampling on the Arabic language and literature (BSA) dataset produces excellent performance on both tests with accuracy values above 90% and area under the curve (AUC) above 0.9. Meanwhile, the Islamic education management (MPI) dataset produces excellent performance when applying a support vector machine based on stratified sampling with accuracy values above 90% and AUC above 0.9. Therefore, it could be concluded that the proposed model has excellent and reliable performance

    Students’ competitiveness: motivation or fear?

    Get PDF
This study aimed to explore the factors that contribute to the high level of competitiveness among students in the People’s Republic of China (PRC). The expectancy value theory has suggested that the fear of failure (FOF) and a highly perceived value for achievement (expectancy value belief, EVB) are the key drivers of competitiveness. To examine this theory, the study analyzed data from 969 college students in the PRC using Bootstrap Analysis with 5,000 samples in a 95% confidence interval. The study found that while the value placed on academic achievement did motivate students to fear failure and become more competitive, perceived social support played a significant role in moderating this relationship. Specifically, the students’ perception of social support moderated the mediation of (FOF) on the link between EVB and competitiveness. These findings suggest that social support is a crucial factor in shaping the dynamics of competitiveness among PRC students. The study may have implications for educators and policymakers seeking to promote healthy competition and academic achievement in highly competitive education systems

Developing an inquiry-based STEAM teaching packet in ecoliteracy for pre-service teachers

    Get PDF
Education plays a vital role in addressing the current environmental crisis. Integrating ecoliteracy in teacher preparation programs empowers colleges and universities to promote a healthy biosphere by producing pre-service teachers (PSTs) who can develop an ecoliterate student citizenry. Connectedly, ecoliteracy must be taught to PSTs through effective and meaningful learning experiences. Using the research and development (RD) design, this study aimed to develop a teaching packet that incorporates inquiry-based learning (IBL) and science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) education to foster ecoliteracy among PSTs. Focus group discussion (FGD) results revealed an opportunity to craft the teaching packet. Ecoliteracy conceptualizations guided the formulation of the packet’s learning outcomes and topics. Eight (8) evaluators assessed the packet’s preliminary version, which satisfied 74% of the indicators in the adapted evaluation tool. After implementing the packet to 38 PSTs, findings reveal a statistically significant increase in conceptual understanding and ecoliteracy levels. Both PSTs and faculty members share positive perceptions towards the teaching packet, though they also suggested further improvements to the material. Overall, the results document the potential of IB-STEAM in fostering PSTs ecoliteracy, showing how innovative and integrative pedagogies are instrumental for effective ecoliteracy instruction in teacher education

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruptions in education globally leading to the implementation of different learning modalities. And it highly affects the most vulnerable groups such as women and children. This study explored the lived experiences of teacher-education student-mothers of a state university in the Philippines towards the end of the pandemic using a phenomenological approach. Twenty-one student-mothers voluntarily participated in the study who were i) bona fide students of the campus, ii) biological mothers, iii) married or living together with a partner, and iv) living with their child. From the data analyses, four major themes emerged: i) unexpected pregnancy, ii) heightened stress during the pandemic, iii) maintaining a positive outlook in life, and iv) managing dual roles. These results implied that the teacher-education student-mothers were highly stressed during the pandemic but they had extrinsic motivators to finish studies such as their children and family. The lived experiences of teacher-education student-mothers can serve as an inspiration to other students to pursue their studies even amid adversities. It is recommended that there be an enhancement of student services tailored to support the mental health of marginalized students
