Negative campaigning and electoral mobilization: empirical evidence from German state elections
Recent research has been inconclusive about the systemic effects of negative campaigning. The available studies, most of which focus on the United States, either conclude that attack behavior decreases turnout, increases turnout, or has no effect on turnout. This study analyzes the relation between negative campaigning and turnout at the constituency level in 13 German state elections in 2021 and 2024. Based on a triangulation of data from the state returning officers and candidate surveys we show that an overall negative tone of the campaign stimulates voter participation; the predicted difference in turnout between a constituency reporting a low and a constituency reporting a high level of negativity is 2.5 percentage points for the overall campaign and 3.3 percentage points for the candidates’ attack behavior at the constituency level. We conclude that the specific effect of negative campaigning on turnout depends on the level of communication
Nonequilibrium universality of Rydberg-excitation spreading on a dynamic network
Understanding the universal properties of nonequilibrium phase transitions of spreading processes is a challenging problem. This applies in particular to irregular and dynamically varying networks. We here investigate an experimentally accessible model system for such processes, namely, the absorbing-state phase transition (ASPT) of Rydberg-excitation spreading, known as Rydberg facilitation, in a laser-driven gas of mobile atoms. It occurs on an irregular graph, set by the random atom positions in the gas, and, depending on temperature, changes its character from static to dynamic. By studying the behavior of the order parameter in the work of Brady et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 133, 173401 (2024)], we showed numerical evidence for a crossover from directed percolation (DP) universality through various phases of anomalous directed percolation (ADP) to mean-field (MF) behavior when the temperature of the gas is increased. As the behavior of the order parameter is not sufficient to uniquely determine the universality class, we here analyze the distribution of avalanches—characteristic of nonequilibrium critical behavior—to fully characterize the ASPT. Performing extended numerical calculations and experiments on a cold 87Rb
atom gas, we confirm our earlier numerical findings and our phenomenological model that maps the dynamic network to a static one with power-law tails of the distribution of excitation distances. Furthermore, we discuss the influence of dissipation, present in the experiment and a necessary ingredient for the self-organization of the system to the critical point. In particular, we study the potential modification of the universality class by losses as a function of dissipation strength

The Impact of Systemic Leadership on Error Culture and the Fear of Failure
An empirical analysis in the context of the automotive supplier industry in Saarland (ASI)
The county Saarland (research field) has been highly influenced by transformations and change (e.g. from coal to steel production and from steel to automotive supply). Another transformation in this region is just around the corner due to the transition from combustion engines to electric mobility, putting currently more than 20,000 jobs at risk. The pos- itive handling of change implies actively shaping transformations, and in the context of manufacturing, constructively dealing with errors and learning quickly in order to remain sustainably productive and competitive.
This research work analysed whether such historically shown transformation ability has established a particularly positive dealing with errors within a productive error culture and if such culture can be strengthened by elements of systemic leadership. The theoretical introduction demonstrates which specific characteristics determine a productive error culture within an organisational culture. These characteristics were then compared with the elements of systemic leadership. From these theoretical findings, a quantitative web- based survey was developed and distributed to ten ASI organisations within the research field in order to get an understanding of the lived reality (theory-practice-comparison).
The results indicate a significant congruence of systemic leadership elements and the requirements of a productive error culture. The most important commonalities are indi- cated in the umbrella terms of sense-making, self-reflection, enabling personal responsibility, holistic thinking and consideration approaches, creating change motivation, building trust, and within the substantial dimension of communication.
Through the survey used for this research, the reciprocal relationships between handling errors (i.e. openness towards errors) and specific communicative situations as well as current learning and qualification positions were confirmed theoretically and empirically. Moreover, participating leaders tended to view some parts of the survey significantly more positive than their employees. Due to the low number in participants of ASI and scant research cases for analysis, it was not possible to draw statistically valid conclusions of this research work
Analysis of the effect of selective electrochemical etching of the shape memory alloy surface on the micromechanical interfacial behavior between the shape memory alloy wire and the epoxy polymer matrix
This research investigates the force transfer mechanisms in active shape memory alloy hybrid composites (SMAHC), specifically focusing on the interface between the surfaces of selectively electrochemical structured nickel titanium (NiTi) shape memory alloy (SMA) wires and the surrounding epoxy polymer matrix. A novel approach that combines optical methods such as stress optics, synchrotron X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with mechanical pull-out tests to quantitatively assess and observe the force transfer capability of surface structured SMA wires in SMAHC is developed and analyzed. Interface adhesion strength is crucial for the performance of SMAHC. Selective electrochemical etching of a one-way effect NiTi SMA wire enhances its adhesion to the polymer matrix, resulting in a significant increase in the force of the first (max. 3.3 times) and the complete interface failure compared to the as-delivered SMA wire during pull-out tests. The selective electrochemical etching process does not significantly influence the SMA wires’ thermomechanical performance. This research also discusses the etching pit formation and distribution impacts on the resulting improvement of force transfer. High resolution μCT in situ pull-out tests show the volume progression of interfacial failure, using digital volume correlation to relate the radial and axial strains of the structured SMA wire to the force of the first interfacial failure. This research highlights the complex mechanical interactions during the pull-out tests, which are influenced not only by shear stresses but also by normal stresses from the contraction of the SMA wire and external stresses from the polymer matrix.
Arbeitnehmerdatenschutz beim Einsatz vernetzter IoT-Sensorik in gewerblich genutzten Gebäuden
Analytical modelling of Stokes flow along superhydrophobic and liquid-infused surfaces
The functionality of superhydrophobic (SHS) and liquid-infused surfaces (LIS) rely on the confinement of air or other fluids within micro- and nanostructures. They have attracted considerable interest due to their ability to significantly influence properties on a macroscale, including self-cleaning, enhanced heat transfer and reduction of flow resistance in sub-millimetre fluidic systems. Therefore, SHS and LIS have the potential to significantly increase the overall efficiency of functional surfaces in various industrial applications. Despite these promising properties, the development of such tailored surfaces requires a fundamental understanding of their local behaviour and properties. However, the underlying fluid dynamics governing low-Reynolds-number flow along such surfaces remains complex and difficult to model, in particular due to the complicated boundary conditions and the need to consider both solid-fluid and fluid-fluid interactions. As a result, analytical solutions are only available for a limited number of (idealised) scenarios.
This thesis is therefore generally devoted to the analytical modelling of such flow regimes, with the objective of providing accurate and accessible solutions that can support surface design and optimisation. Mathematically, one-dimensional velocity field expressions u=(0,0,w) governed by either the Poisson or Laplace equation and subject to mixed-type no-slip/shear boundary conditions are derived to describe pressure-driven or shear-driven laminar Stokes flow. Using powerful complex analysis techniques, in particular conformal mappings and prime functions, analytical models are obtained that capture the essential alternating features of such flow past SHS and LIS. From these, further expressions are derived and presented for key quantities such as volume flux and the effective slip length, which are fundamental to the evaluation of slip performance and overall efficiency.
In general, the novel derivation methods based on special complex analysis tools, and the solutions they produce, are of general relevance to a wide range of mixed-type boundary value problems involving Poisson's or Laplace's equation, which arise in numerous other applications that exceed the scope of the presented thesis, such as planar elasticity problems and electrostatics
Fluid Properties and Droplet Evaporation Modeling for Spray Flame Synthesis
Spray flame synthesis is a versatile process for producing nanoparticles. In that process, a mixture of a combustible solvent with a metal-containing substance, the so-called precursor solution, is sprayed through a nozzle. The droplets are then ignited by contact with a pilot flame, eventually resulting in the formation of metal oxide nanoparticles. Thermophysical property data are essential for improving the understanding of the process and its rational design, but are unavailable for many precursor solutions. In the present work, fluid properties of mixtures of 2-ethylhexanoic acid (EHA) with ethanol or p-xylene, which are common solvents for precursor solutions, are studied. Moreover, fluid properties of mixtures of tin(II) 2-ethylhexanoate and p-xylene, which are e.g. used for the spray flame synthesis of gas sensor materials, are investigated. For these mixtures, the investigated properties include the density, viscosity, thermal conductivity, isobaric heat capacity, and self-diffusion coefficients of both components at temperatures between 293.15 and 353.15 K. Furthermore, isobaric vapor-liquid equilibria of mixtures of EHA with ethanol or p-xylene are measured at pressures below atmospheric pressure. Liquid-liquid equilibria in mixtures of EHA, ethanol, and water are measured at temperatures between 283 and 333 K. Correlations are established for all properties and provide a basis for process analysis and optimization e.g. by process simulations. In the spray flame process, micro-explosions of the evaporating droplets are believed to be key for achieving a homogeneous product quality, but their causes are under debate in the literature. A possible explanation for these micro-explosions is superheating inside the droplet, which can occur if heat conduction inside the droplet is faster than diffusive mass transport, i.e., for high Lewis numbers. For all studied systems, the Lewis numbers are high, indicating that superheating may occur inside the evaporating droplets. To study this in more detail, a one-dimensional evaporating droplet model that considers both the energy transport and the mass transport inside the droplet and the corresponding convective boundary conditions is developed and implemented. Simulations of the evaporation of droplets of titanium(IV) isopropoxide and p-xylene are carried out. The simulation results show that superheating sets in inside the droplet. Hence, after reaching a certain threshold, a sudden evaporation will occur inside the droplet – and cause the micro-explosion. This behavior is to be expected in all systems with high Lewis numbers.
Fiber Analysis in Micro Structures
In the last two decades, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning
technology has become affordable and widely available for industrial and research applications. Imaging technology has evolved from requiring synchrotrons
for high-resolution images in to desktop scanners providing submicron resolution or 4D dynamic imaging in a lab-based system. This popularized the
application of micro-CT scans in material science. Fibers, by nature, have a
very high aspect ratio, requiring high resolution to resolve their cross-section
while needing enough field of view to capture their trajectory. Extracting
properties of the microstructure from micro-CT scans opens up a wide range
of possibilities, from comparing different manufacturing methods to creating
digital models of the materials and changing them to investigate how
specific microstructural properties impact overall performance. A method
was developed to analyze the fibers in large micro-CT scans of nonwoven
materials. Nonwoven fibers can be multiple millimeters long, typically in a diameter range of 15-30 micrometers. To overcome typical issues of
skeletonization-based approaches, I present a machine learning-based method
to find the centerlines of each fiber in the scan. These centerlines are then
processed into a graph to correct errors in the neural network’s output. Training data for the neural network was obtained using the structure generator
”FiberGeo” in ”GeoDict”. I demonstrated the approach on a large nonwoven
micro-CT. Fiber-based structures like carbon paper also play an important
role as gas diffusion layers in fuel cells. Carbon paper is a porous composite
made from carbon fibers and carbonized binder. When imaging these materials in a micro-CT, the binder and the fibers do not have any contrast. The
distribution of binder and fibers influences the physical properties of the gas
diffusion layers. To segment fibers from binder in these images, a machine
learning-based approach is presented. Similar to before I created artificial
models of carbon paper. For these models, we know which voxels are binder
and which are fibers. The models are used to train a neural network that segments the binary images (pore and solid) into three-phase images (pore, fiber,
and binder). I presented the approach on multiple scans and also validated it
against a small cutout that was labeled manually. For injection-molded composites, the length of the fibers after the injection process can significantly
influence the overall strength of the materials. To measure the fiber
length, I enhanced the fiber identification method from before with a larger
training dataset. I applied our enhanced method to a sample of a glass fiber
composite and compared the results to experimental lab measurements. The
method presented gave good agreement, enabling the measurement of fiber
length without destruction of the sample and the experimental work
