Radar-Camera Fusion with Deep Neural Networks for Automotive Object Detection
Reliable environment perception is critical for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and automated driving systems, which rely heavily on sensor data from cameras, LiDARs, and radars. This dissertation focuses on the promising yet under-researched area of radar-camera fusion via deep neural networks. Radars and cameras complement each other well, with radars providing robust measurements in challenging conditions and cameras offering high-resolution visual data for object classification and accurate localization.
Radar-camera fusion presents significant challenges due to the difference in semantic level. Integrating sparse radar point clouds with detailed images raises questions about the optimal fusion point within the neural network. This thesis introduces Fusion Point Pruning, a technique that identifies ideal fusion points during training. Additionally, a novel projection method maps enriched radar data onto the image plane that increases data density based on azimuth uncertainty, which improves 2D object detection.
Another challenge is the different measurement coordinates of radars and cameras. Traditional fusion methods either lose radar’s geometric information when merged on the image plane or require high computational resources to fuse in 3D space. This thesis proposes RC-BEVFusion, a new approach that merges radar and camera data in the bird’s eye view plane, leveraging camera-based object detection advancements. This method utilizes two radar encoders and integrates seamlessly with existing image-only detection networks, significantly enhancing 3D object detection performance.
An additional cross-dataset study on sensor quality and scale indicates that image networks benefit from large-scale, varied visual inputs, while radar networks rely more on resolution than volume.
To showcase the real-world applicability of the proposed algorithms, a data processing pipeline for a test vehicle equipped with multiple sensors was developed. This includes extensive data pre-processing, calibration, and real-time data management. A new dataset was generated using a proposed automated labeling pipeline based on LiDAR data. Domain adaptation techniques were employed to enhance network performance on the generated dataset. The optimized networks were then tested in real-time on an Edge AI device, balancing computational efficiency and detection accuracy. The findings contribute valuable insights into sensor fusion and automotive object detection
This publication presents the results of a representative Germany-wide survey on the state of
disaster preparedness in Germany. The first part starts by clarifying the basic terms. The study
is then placed in the context of national and international research, followed by a presentation
of the research design. The second part presents the results. They paint a heterogeneous
picture: while parts of the population have supplies and basic skills such as first aid, there are
clear deficits, particularly in drinking water supplies, non-electric equipment, and practical
skills. Preparedness measures are predominantly event-driven and rarely established as
routines. The barriers consist primarily of a lack of problem awareness, a high level of trust in
government support, and material constraints. Sources of information, interests in further
education, and preferred formats for further education vary significantly according to age,
gender, and social status. In the concluding section, the findings for civil protection and adult
education are discussed and desiderata for future research are identified. Overall, it is clear
that preparedness requires continuous, target group-oriented, and practice-oriented
education strategies in order to strengthen social resilience in the long term
The present master’s thesis explores how the principles of improvisational theatre reflect the core attitudes of the Adult Education of Recognition (Erwachsenenpädagogik der Anerkennung) and what implications arise from this relationship for the design of adult learning processes. The point of departure is a theoretical research gap: while the Adult Education of Recognition, as developed by Wolfgang Müller-Commichau, is well established in educational theory, a systematic analysis of its connections to theatre pedagogy – and particularly to improvisational theatre – has so far been lacking.
Through a literary-hermeneutic analysis, key philosophical and pedagogical concepts – especially those of Wolfgang Müller-Commichau, Martin Buber, Harald Høffding, and Jacob Levy Moreno – are examined in relation to one another and linked to theatre-pedagogical principles as formulated by Viola Spolin, Keith Johnstone, and Gunter Lösel. The analysis reveals that improvisational theatre is not merely a method but an ethical-aesthetic practice in which recognition, dialogue, and emotional competence become particularly tangible.
The author’s original concept of the “principle of spontaneous recognition action” condenses these theoretical interrelations into a heuristic model that describes the interplay between attitude and action in adult education. It offers a new perspective on the dialogical, intersubjective, and aesthetic dimensions of pedagogical practice and illustrates how educators can initiate processes of recognition through a humorous, spontaneous, and responsible stance.
In doing so, the thesis contributes to the theoretical consolidation of the Adult Education of Recognition and provides an impulse for a form of education that, amid efficiency and digitalization, seeks to preserve the humanity, encounter, and poetry of learning
Strategic and counterfactual reasoning in AI-assisted decision making
From finance and healthcare to criminal justice and transportation, various domains that involve critical decisions, traditionally made by humans, are increasingly incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) systems into their decision making processes. Modern AI systems excel at processing vast amounts of data and solving complex problems at a speed and scale unimaginable for humans. However, complete automation of high-stakes decisions is often undesirable due to legal, ethical, and societal concerns. A promising approach, which has attracted significant attention in the machine learning literature, lies in human-AI collaboration: decision making pipelines that leverage the computational strengths of AI systems to enhance the overall quality of decisions while maintaining a degree of human control. In this context, I focus on AI-assisted decision making scenarios characterized by complexity and uncertainty, specifically requiring strategic reasoning about others’ actions and counterfactual reasoning about alternatives to past decisions.
First, I focus on strategic reasoning and introduce methods based on game-
theoretic modeling to support policy design in strategic environments. These methods enable a decision maker in a resource allocation scenario to design policies, informed by a predictive model, that maximize their utility while accounting for strategic responses from individuals who gain knowledge about the policy and aim to receive a beneficial decision. I provide algorithms for two distinct scenarios with varying levels of information available to individuals: a fully transparent scenario
where the policy is disclosed and a partially transparent scenario where the decision maker provides actionable recommendations to individuals rejected by the policy.
Then, I shift focus to counterfactual reasoning and develop methods based on causal modeling to enhance the counterfactual reasoning capabilities of a human decision maker in a sequential decision making task. These methods aim to improve the decision maker’s learning process from past experiences by identifying critical time steps where different actions could have led to better outcomes. Specifically, I consider settings where a decision maker observes the state of the environment over time and takes a series of interdependent actions that result in an observed outcome. For both discrete and continuous states, I formalize the problem of finding alternative action sequences, close to the observed one, that would have achieved a better counterfactual outcome, and I provide efficient algorithmic solutions.
Finally, I investigate how people perceive responsibility in human-AI teams. In this context, I propose a computational model based on counterfactual simulations to predict how an external observer attributes responsibility to a human and an AI agent collaborating towards a common goal. To evaluate the model’s predictions, I develop a simulation environment that generates stylized instances of sequential human-AI collaboration and conduct a human-subject study in which participants
make responsibility judgments about the two agents
Do no harm, but take no shit.
Inclusive Systems Engineering
New systems are becoming ever more complex and interconnected. To develop
these systems the expertise and collaboration of many stakeholders, including
domain experts and systems engineers, is required. Usually these domain experts are not familiar with systems engineering, which is especially true with
the adoption of the model-based systems engineering.
In order to identify systems engineering issues and importance of requested
features this thesis presents data gathered from two surveys which have been
conducted. The first survey had participants who were students of the RPTU
Kaiserslautern with no prior systems engineering experience. This survey was
used to review SysML, SysML v2 and SysMD on their entry bar and as how
intuitive these modelling languages are experienced. The key insights of this
survey were the need for simplification of modelling syntax and the clear preference for graphical model representations for visualisation and understanding
a model and the preference towards a textual representation in order to create and extend a model. The second survey was shared with members of the
Object Management Group and the International Council on Systems Engineering. The goal of this survey was to identify key issues of systems engineering. The study had participants from different levels of system engineering
experience, making it possible to identify indicative trends on different needs
depending on the experience. As expected the professional level participants
perceive systems engineering as easier to get into than beginners. This survey
supports the results from other studies while focusing on an individual level
and participants from a variety of systems engineering expertise. In addition,
the survey indicates a need for simplification of syntax of modelling languages
and tools for model verification and validation.
To reduce the entry bar of systems engineering and enhance collaboration the
notion of inclusive systems engineering is introduced as a means to make systems engineering more accessible. This extends systems engineering towards
being more accessible for domain experts by focusing on a user-centric design
and proposes the adoption of features aimed at user guidance, providing tool
accessibility and features focused on enhancing the accessibility of the systems engineering process. The notion of user guidance as a means to enhance
systems engineering is discussed in more detail, giving an introduction into
human decision making and reviewing common user influencing techniques
Untargeted LC-IMS-qToF-MS-Based Lipidomics Approach to Evaluate the Effect of a Polyphenol-Rich Beverage on Human Lipid Profiles
Polyphenols are an important class of secondary metabolites that possess antioxidant ornanti-inflammatory properties and are associated with many health benefits. It has been reported that extracts of fruit juices or the fruit juices themselves are able to influence lipid metabolism. The aims of this study were to establish a reliable analytical method and thereafter investigate the influence of a polyphenol-rich fruit juice during an eightweek intervention on plasma lipid profiles in healthy male subjects. A placebo-controlled
intervention study with 36 healthy male subjects was carried out. Volunteers consumed 750 mL of a polyphenol-rich or placebo beverage on a daily basis. With the established untargeted LC-IMS-qTof method, lipids could be identified, and changes in the lipidome could be detected. For the first time, a comparison of the lipidome of the control vs. treatment group allowed for the identification of differences in lipid profiles. The observed changes suggest that polyphenol intake leads to the targeted re-modeling of the lipidome,
affecting bioactive lipid mediators and membrane components in particular. In the future, our identified lipid markers may be established as potential biomarker candidates related
to health
