also politics - in one country. One way is to look at the media that become the backbone of communication between the state and the people. The powerful media can be used to form people's understanding on "narratives" created by the state. The narratives on politics. freedom of the press. development. and economy are constructed in such a way that people cannot but accept what are presented through the media. Singapore'sfoundingfather Lee Kuan Yew - and also his successors - understood the powerful media could bring aboutfor Singapore's culture and politics. That is wiry Lee -and his successors - used the media to build andform Singapore's culture in the first place. Singapore's ethnic and cultural diversities - which consist of the Chinese. Indians. and Malays - are regarded as a potential conflict if the state fails to set up a "common denominator" for all Singaporeans. Based on this ground. Lee and his successors figured out what to do to cope with this problem. Lee and his successors came to a conclusion that Singapore government should make use of the media to spread the idea of Singapore culture of which
characteristics are pluralistic. cosmopolitan. and meritocratic. The media have contributed to spread the so-called rujak lal/guage - or widely known as Singlish - a unique Singaporean English blended with Chinese. Malay and Indian. Singapore's broadcast media policy - radio and television - are deeply influenced by Lee Kuan Yew's vision of the city state. SYNTHEZISING IDEOLOGY: REPRESENTATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS IDENTITY IN THE 1960S
Get PDFIdentity is shaped through values and values are maintained through ideology. Ideology is therefore important for every nation in making its vision into realization. The research is intended to find out (1) the values that African-American would like to fight for, through which they try to create their own identity, (2) how African-Americans, as minority, tried to build their identity in 1960s, and (3) the common ground of the effort in sustaining their ideology in that they can build their identity. This is a qualitative and interdisciplinary research in the constructivist paradigm in which qualitative method is used in gathering the data and descriptive qualitative is used in analyzing the data. This research reveals that the ways in establishing the African-American identities are through sports, social practices and music. In relation to the notion of ideology, the spreading and strengthening of African-American ideology, both cultural and psudo ideology, are done through humanitarian actions to fight the discrimination they endure. This research determines that the synthesis in creating identity among the whites is through individual freedom and responsibility in which freedom is the common ground of human existence marking the primary force of the existence of identity

DEATH AND DESPAIR IN THE POETRY OF TORU DUTT
No full textCompared to the short time that she lived Toru Dutt's literary output as a poet was prodigious. Her yearning for the past and her deep sense of many faceted losses are apparent in her poetry. The evocative acceptance of approaching death in one so young presents a picture of a girl mature beyond her years. A study of her poetry reveals her close affinity with the Romantic poets. Referring to various poems of Toru Dutt, the paper studies the role that religion, and her interpretation of religion/s she was exposed to, has to play in this embracing of the inevitability of fate. This paper analyses the reasons for the presence of the elements of death, despair, nostalgia and a yearning for the past and the role that religion plays in her acceptance of the inevitability of death in the poetry of Toru Dutt. Through a critical examination of various poems, the paper tries to uncover the beautiful interplay of memories of past experiences, stories heard long ago and the moments in the present in Dutt's poetry. It traces the journey of the poet from her exposure to death, to a questioning of death, its nature and the forms it might take, to the final acceptance of death as something as inevitable and precious as love

Teaching in Indonesia. Finally, the time comes; and the manuscripts
are compiled into a book entitled "The Teaching of English as a
Foreign Language in Indonesia." This book is actually a compilation
of manuscripts written by Bambang Yudi Cahyono and Utami
Widiati, two professors at English Department of State University of
Malang. There are 9 chapters in this book in which the content is about
English Language Teaching in the Indonesian context. Therefore, in
this review, I will discuss the contents of the book, as well as highlight
the benefits of this book related to English Language Teaching in
Indonesia

No full textIris Murdoch ~ The Sea, The Sea is a novel which uses nature as its background or setting. This article particularly intends to give its attention to the aspects of nature delineated in the novel. In other words, this study is aimed at identifying, classifying, and describing aspects or elements of nature in it. It is also important to describe the relationship between these aspects and the story, as well as the characters. In addition, the tenets of "ecocriticism'' are used as the parameter toprove that the novel is still "anthropocentric", or a human-centred work of art. The reason why such a method is used is simply because it is concerned with nature. Nevertheless, the study in this case can not be seen as a "pure" ecological reading because it merely uses ecological boundaries to prove the anthropocentricity of the novel. However, since some principles in the ecocriticism are used, it is inevitable not to mention or explain what this ecocriticism deals with
