    THE FACT OF LEARNING ECONOMICS AT NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF LAOS DURING THE PANDEMICS COVID-19 IN LAO PDR

    Abstract: The out-breaking of Pandemics Covid-19 which is affected to many countries and regions in the world in the term of education. This study uses a qualitative approach which is the type of research is Phenomenology (case study). This type of phenomenological research is used due to it is oriented to the topic of teaching-learning economics course of teachers and students in National University of Laos. The determination of this research subject with the Snowball Sampling technique and the data collection techniques with in-depth interview and documentation. The finding results of this research found that learning economics in National University of Laos is not directly affected and is still continuing lecture as normal classes (face to face) and it is followed the order of National Operation Center for Covid-19 (NOCC) committee to resumed regular education after the extension of the annual yearly holiday during the Lao New Year in April 2020. For learning via online application, it has been already approved for teaching-learning for example: Google Meet, Zoom, skype etc. in addition, the perception and preparation most of them are readiness 100% which is mean that lecturers and students are aware of how to implement of online learning application.Keywords: pandemics, learning process, economics learning, higher educatio

    Swear Words in Early Childhood Communication

    Abstract: There has many differ perception about the meaning of swear words in daily communication, so that this research’s aim was to described those swear word’s meaning. The focus of this research is meaning of swear words that said by children age 4-6 years in RA Al-Azhar Bantur. This research used descriptive qualitative method, thereby the collected data  was found on research field. The result showed that the swearing words commonly spoken by children was jancuk, taek, bedhes, patek, goblok, gendeng, and jangkrik. Children did not know the meaning of those swearing words, but they assume that swearing is a taboo and it is not a good thing if they did.Key words: swearing, swear words, children communication, children social lifeAbstrak:Banyak perbedaan persepsi terhadap makna penggunaan kata-kata misuh dalam komunikasi sehari-hari sehingga penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan makna tersebut. Fokus pada penelitian ini adalah makna kata-kata misuh yang digunakan oleh anak usia 4-6 tahun di RA Al-Azhar Bantur. Metode yang digunakan deskriptif kualitatif sehingga data yang diperoleh adalah fakta di lapangan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kata misuh yang biasa diucapkan oleh anak adalah jancuk, taek, bedhes, patek, goblok, gendeng, dan jangkrik.     Physical Education Graduates Prospect in Wetland Area

    Abstract: As a university located in wetland are, Lambung Mangkurat University must adapt with the surrounding geographical area to prepare prospective graduates that meets the current local demands. This paper seeks to explore the prospect of Physcial Educatioan Graduates in wetland areas. This paper was a descriptive research which examined the current development of Physical Education to meet the demand of wetland area. This paper showed that some efforts must be performed to improve the graduates of Physical Education Department. The efforts that must be made including: the preparation of professional faculty members, suitable and contextualized curriculum, supporting facilities and infrastructure, improving institutional understanding, and improving institutional support in the form of policy.Key Words: physical education, graduates prospect, wetland area, graduates qualityAbstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menguji pengaruh penerapan dari permainan tradisional terhadap perkembangan motorik pada siswa penyandang disabilitas. Metode yang digunakan pada penelitian ialah metode eksperimen, sampel yang berpartisipasi dalam penelitian sebanyak 25 orang siswa disabilitas yang diambil dari tiga sekolah SLB dengan usia rata-rata siswa 12 tahun. Teknik pengambilan data yang digunakan ialah purposive sampling. Pengumpulan data dalam penelitian menggunakan tes awal dan tes akhir dengan menggunakan tes standing broad jump, long jump, melempar. Simpulan penelitian menun-jukkan bahwa permainan tradisional memberikan perbedaan yang signifikan pada perkembangan motorik anak disabilitas.Kata kunci: permainan tradisional, perkembangan motorik kasar, disabilitas, pendidikan jasman

    THE EFFECT OF USING GOOGLE DOCS ON THE STUDENTS’ SKILL IN WRITING EXPOSITORY ESSAY ACROSS PERSONALITY LEARNING STYLE

    Abstract: This research is aimed at (1) finding out whether the EFL students taught using Google docs show better writing ability than those taught without using Google docs, (2) discovering if there is a significant difference in writing ability between the introverted students and extroverted students taught using Google docs. This research involved two intact classes of ten graders in SMA Kristen Charis Malang consisting of 29 and 28 students respectively that were randomly selected to be the experimental and control group.  The experimental group worked collaboratively outside the class using Google docs whereas the control group worked in the face-to-face class. Both groups were assigned to compose an expository essay based on the topics given in the pre-test and post-test to reveal their writing achievement before and after the treatment. The results showed that the mean score of experimental group was significantly higher than that of the control group. When it comes to personality learning styles, there was no significant difference in the mean scores obtained by the extroverted students and introverted students.Keywords: google docs, writing ability, expository essay, personality, learning style

    EXPLORING ENGLISH LECTURERS’ BELIEFS ABOUT THE USE OF NATIVE LANGUAGE IN THE EFL CONTEXT

    Abstract: The beginning of the twentieth century was the time when the ELT theoreticians and academics prohibited the use of mother tongue with the assumption that teaching and learning a new language in the exclusive and monolingual approach must be better-off. After obtaining its dominance in language teaching methodology, this monolingual approach began to be questioned. Moreover, what is up-to-date in works of literature and theories is not essentially indicating what actually arrives on the scene in the EFL classroom practices. The students' own-language (OL) has survived over the years. This research explored the lecturers' beliefs about the use of own-language by focusing on certain variables in the context of EFL. The findings clearly provide shreds of evidence that their beliefs about own-language, particularly in their classroom practices, are more complicated than generally presented in the ELT literature. Subsequently, the results could offer a description of how the lecturers use the own-language based on their own beliefs. The report also confirms that own-language is unavoidable and becomes a part of new language learning. Lastly, some considerations for ELT teachers, lecturers, and further researchers are provided at the end of the discussions.Key words: native language use, lecturers’ beliefs, EFL context Abstrak:Awal abad kedua puluh adalah saat dimana para ahli teori dan akademisi pengajaran Bahasa Inggris melarang penggunaan bahasa ibu dengan asumsi bahwa bahasa baru harus diajarkan dan dipelajari secara eksklusif dan dengan satu bahasa. Setelah memperoleh dominasinya dalam metodologi pengajaran bahasa, pendekatan monolingual ini mulai dipertanyakan. Selain itu, apa yang terbaru dalam literatur dan teori tidak serta merta mencerminkan apa yang sebenarnya terjadi dalam praktik kelas Bahasa Inggris. Kenyataannya, bahasa sendiri telah bertahan selama bertahun-tahun. Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi kepercayaan dosen tentang penggunaan bahasa sendiri dengan berfokus pada variabel-variabel tertentu dalam konteks Pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Temuan dari penelitian ini jelas membuktikan bahwa kepercayaan mereka tentang bahasa sendiri, khususnya dalam praktik kelas, lebih rumit daripada yang umumnya disajikan dalam literatur pengajaran Bahasa Inggris. Selanjutnya, hasil penelitian ini menyajikan deskripsi tentang bagaimana umumnya para dosen menggunakan bahasa sendiri berdasarkan kepercayaan mereka. Laporan penelitian ini juga menegaskan bahwa bahasa sendiri tidak dapat dihindari dan bahkan menjadi bagian dari pembelajaran sebuah bahasa baru. Terakhir, beberapa pertimbangan untuk guru, dosen, dan peneliti selanjutnya dalam dunia pengajaran Bahasa Inggris disediakan di bagian akhir diskusi.Kata kunci: bahasa ibu, persepsi dosen, konteks EF

    Underlying Factors of Speaking Anxiety across Learning Styles

    Abstract: This study is intended to investigate the underlying factors contributing to students’ speaking anxiety across learning styles. This article is a part of a larger study on EFL freshmen speaking anxiety across their learning styles which highlight the main factors that lay behind speaking anxiety. This study was carried out in one of Islamic universities in Malang. The data were collected through students’ questionnaires. The results reveal that fear of negative evaluation, test anxiety, and communication apprehension play the underlying factors of speaking anxiety across learning styles. Further, recommendations for lecturers are provided.Keywords: speaking anxiety, learning styles, factors Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti factor-faktor dasar yang dapat menjadikan kecemasan berbicara pada mahasiswa lintas gaya belajarnya. Artikel ini merupakan bagian dari penelitian utama yaitu kecemasan berbicara mahasiswa baru lintas gaya belajarnya, dimana penelitian ini menekankan pada pembahasan factor-faktor utama dari kecemasan berbicara. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan di salah satu perguruan tinggi Islam di Malang. Data didapatkan dari angket mahasiswa. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ketakutan akan penilaian negative, kecemasan terhadap ujian, and ketakutan dalam berkomunikasi merupakan factor-faktor yang mendasari kecemasan berbicara lintas gaya belajar.     ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS AND POLITENESS STRATEGIES IN EFL CLASSROOM INTERACTION AND THE STUDENTS’ PERCEPTIONS

    Abstract: This study explores illocutionary acts and politeness strategies employed by the academic staff and also the students’ perceptions on the academic staff’s language and politeness strategies in EFL classroom interaction. Twelve different classes of six English academic staff in one term lasting 100 minutes each were observed and recorded and then transcribed. The results showed that four out of five types of illocutionary acts were employed; directive, representative, commisive, and expressive. Concerning the use of politeness strategies in the academic staff’s illocutionary acts, bald on-record, positive, negative and off-record politeness strategies were all employed. This study also indicates that most of the university students expressed agreement to the use of polite language in the classroom interaction. Key words: illocutionary acts, face threatening acts, politeness strategies, perceptionAbstrak:Penelitian ini membahas tentang tindak ilokusi dan strategi kesopanan yang digunakan oleh para dosen dan persepsi dari mahasiswa mereka terkait penggunaan bahasa dan strategi kesopanan oleh dosen di interaksi kelas Bahasa Inggris sebagai Bahasa Asing. Dua belas kelas yang berbeda dari enam dosen Bahasa Inggris dengan waktu pertemuan masing-masing 100 menit telah diobservasi, direkam, dan ditranskrip. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa para dosen menggunakan empat dari lima macam tipe tindak ilokusi, yaitu: direktif, representatif, komisif, dan ekspresif. Sehubungan dengan strategi kesopanan yang ditemukan di tindak ilokusi para dosen, disimpulkan bahwa para dosen menggunakan tipe kesopanan bald on-record, kesopanan positif, kesopanan negatif, dan kesopanan off-record.     EFL Learning Strategies Employed by Indonesian Successful High School Students

    Abstract: Language learning strategies (LLSs) play an essential role in the process of English language learning. This study is aimed at investigating language-learning strategies employed by successful Indonesian EFL high school students. This study is of significance to provide a model of strategies practiced by successful EFL students who manage to develop good command of English regardless certain limitations and challenges they face. The results of this study show the students actively employ a combination of affective and cognitive-social learning strategies to develop their English skills.Keywords: language learning strategies, successful EFL learners, language learning, high schoolAbstrak: Strategi pembelajaran bahasa (LLS) memainkan peran penting dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Studi ini sangat penting untuk memberikan model strategi yang dipraktikkan oleh siswa EFL yang berhasil yang berhasil mengembangkan penguasaan bahasa Inggris yang baik terlepas dari batasan dan tantangan tertentu yang mereka hadapi.     Basic Psychological Needs on Primary School Student Well-being

    Abstract: This study aimed  to test the effect of basic psychological needs toward the school well-being. This quantitative study uses a causal relationship research design. A total of 150 students were taken from six primary schools using a multi stage cluster random sampling technique. Data were  collected by using two types of instruments, namely instruments to measure basic psychological needs; and instruments to measure school well-being. Data then analyzed by using regression. The findings showed there was an effect of the basic psychological needs on school well being. The need for relatedness is the most predictor to school well-being; whereas the need of autonomy is not associated significantly with school well-being. Key Words: basic psychological needs, school well-being, self-determination theoryAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji pengaruh kebutuhan dasar psikologis terhadap kesejahteraan sekolah. Penelitian kuantitatif ini menggunakan disain penelitian hubungan kausal. Sebanyak 150 siswa diambil dari enam Sekolah Dasar menggunakan Teknik multi stage cluster random sampling. Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan dua jenis instrumen, yakni instrumen untuk mengukur kebutuhan dasar psikologis; dan instrumen untuk mengukur kesejahteraan sekolah. Analisis data menggunakan regresi. Hasil penelitian membuktikan adanya pengaruh signifikan kebutuhan dasar psikologis terhadap kesejahteraan sekolah. Kebutuhan untuk keterkaitan merupakan prediktor yang paling besar terhadap kesejahteraan sekolah, sedangkan kebutuhan untuk mandiri tidak berpengaruh signifikan terhadap ke-sejahteraan sekolah.Kata kunci: kebutuhan dasar psikologis, kesejahteraan sekolah, teori determinasi dir

    The Correlation between Syntactic Knowledge and Reading Comprehension

    Abstract: This study aimed to find out the precise degree of relationship between syntactic knowledge (represented by grammar scores) and reading comprehension within EPT context. The data collected were in form of examinees’ individual scores of EPT taken from two language institutes. The data representing 160 examinees were divided into two sets of scores: grammar and reading. Utilizing statistical analysis software, the researcher analyzed the data using Pearson’s correlation coefficient. The result shows that syntactic knowledge and reading comprehension have strong positive correlation. It indicates that examinees’ grammar scores might predict their reading scores within EPT. Key Words: syntactic knowledge, reading comprehensionAbstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui nilai pasti dari hubungan antara pengetahuan sin-taktis (diwakili oleh nilai tata bahasa) dengan pemahaman membaca dalam konteks EPT. Data yang ter-kumpul berbentuk nilai individu peserta EPT yang diperoleh dari dua lembaga bahasa. Data yang me-wakili 160 peserta dibagi menjadi dua: nilai tata bahasa membaca. Dengan memanfaatkan aplikasi anali-sis statistik, peneliti menganalisis data menggunakan koefisien korelasi Pearson. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa pengetahuan sintaksis dan pemahaman membaca memiliki korelasi positif yang kuat.
