    Spermine Suppresses Adipocyte Differentiation and Exerts Anti-Obesity Effects In Vitro and In Vivo

    Endogenous polyamines such as putrescine (Put), spermidine (Spd), and spermine (Spm) affect adipocyte differentiation. In this study, we investigated the effect of exogenously supplemented polyamines on mouse adipocyte differentiation and anti-obesity actions in vitro and in vivo. The preadipocyte cell line, 3T3-L1, was cultured with Put, Spd, or Spm, and lipid accumulation in the cells was measured by Oil Red O staining. Lipid accumulation was significantly suppressed by Spm. Suppression of CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α mRNA by Spm suggested that the decreased lipid accumulation was due to delaying the cell differentiation. The body weight and fat of obese mice induced with a high-fat diet were reduced by oral ingestion of Spm. In conclusion, oral supplementation of Spm has the ability to prevent obesity through inhibition of adipocyte differentiation.p.8 Article number: 11818 Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.     Lignin, an active component in the corn silk water extract, inhibits glycation

    The formation of advanced glycation end products is associated with aging and diabetic complications such as neuropathy, retinopathy, and nephropathy. Thus, the suppression of AGEs formation could prevent and/or treat their related disorders. Corn silk is used as a traditional medicine for the prevention of diabetic complications and treatment of edema in Japan and China. Previous studies revealed the anti-glycation activity of flavonoids in the methanolic extract of corn silk. The anti-glycation activity of the corn silk water extract was higher than that of the methanolic extract; however, the active components of the water extract remained unidentified. The purpose of this study is to make clear the components showing anti-glycation activity in the corn silk water extract and elucidated their structural characteristics. The evaluation of anti-glycation activity was carried out by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect glycated bovine serum albumin. Remarkable anti-glycation activity was observed in the > 3 kDa fraction. Reversed-phase HPLC analysis of this fraction showed broad peaks characteristic of high-molecular-weight polyphenols. Decomposition reactions did not provide evidence of condensed or acid-hydrolyzable tannins. Therefore, polyphenols contained in the corn silk water extract were considered to be lignin-carbohydrate complex. The 1H- and 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy spectra of the > 3 kDa fraction were in agreement with the values reported for lignin.     3ʹ-Aminofluorene-9-spiro-5ʹ-imidazolidine-2ʹ,4ʹ-dithione as a Sensing Material for Planar Aromatic Solvents

    Herein, we investigate the non-covalent interactions between aromatic compounds and a spirocycle-bearing imidazolidinedithione molecule 3ʹ-aminofluorene-9-spiro-5ʹ-imidazolidine-2ʹ,4ʹ-dithione Host Material (HM). HM and planar aromatic solvent molecules, such as benzene, pyrrole, and thiophene, form molecular compounds with a composition ratio of 2:1 through NH∙∙∙π interactions. These compounds exhibit weak emission in the λmax range of 515–544 nm, which were estimated from the sum of the squares of the differences between the electronegativities of the bonded atoms comprising the guest molecule structures without employing quantum calculations. Moreover, a linear correlation between the desorption temperature and NH∙∙∙π interactions is determined from the heats of formation of HM, guest molecules, and corresponding molecular compounds
