    The Enhancing Effects of S-Allylcysteine on Liver Regeneration Are Associated with Increased Expression of mRNAs Encoding IGF-1 and Its Receptor in Two-Thirds Partially Hepatectomized Rats

    Two-thirds partial hepatectomy (PHx) was performed in rats, and the differences in effects between S-allylcysteine (SAC) and other sulfur-containing compounds on regeneration of the remaining liver and restoration of the injury were examined. Three days after two-thirds PHx, rats treated with 300 mg/kg/d, per os (p.o.) SAC showed a 1.2-fold increase in liver weight per 100 g body weight compared with saline-treated controls. In contrast, S-methylcysteine (SMC) (300 mg/kg/d, p.o.) or cysteine (Cys) (300 mg/kg/d, p.o.) did not have a regeneration-promoting effect. In the comparison with control rats, the regenerating liver of SAC-treated rats showed a significantly higher 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine labeling index on day 1. In contrast, serum alanine aminotransferase activity, which increases following PHx, was significantly inhibited by SAC and SMC (but not Cys) on day 1 after two-thirds PHx. In addition, SAC induced increases in insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1 and its receptor mRNA expressions at 1 h after two-thirds PHx, and it increased phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)2 and Akt at 3 h after two-thirds PHx without affecting serum growth hormone levels. These results demonstrate that SAC is a mitogenic effector of normal remnant liver and promotes recuperation of liver function after two-thirds PHx.     Prediction of Molecular Properties by Molecular Orbital Calculations and Machine Learning

    The values of the internuclear distances and the dipole moments of 14 small molecules have been estimated by machine learning with only molecular orbital energies as the explanatory variables. We use four regression methods, partial least square (PLS), random forest (RF), Radial Basis Function Kernel Regularized Least Squares (krlsRadial), and Baysian Regularized Neural Networks (BRNN) and we report only BRNN results for the internuclear distances, and PLS results for the dipole moments. The coefficients of determination for the internulear distances and the dipole moments are 0.9318 and 0.7265, respectively. It has been proved that the internuclear distances and the dipole moments can be predicted by the molecular orbital energies only

    Luminescent properties of a polymeric copper(I)-bromide complex in a PMMA film

    The [Cu2Br2(DIB)2(PPh2)2]n complex, obtained by the reaction between [Cu4Br4(PPh3)4] and 1,4-diisocyanobenzene (DIB), was found to have a bridged polymeric structure with a planar {Cu2Br2} core. The compound exhibited bluish-green (λmax = 498 nm) and green (λmax = 515 nm) luminescence at 295 and 77 K, respectively, corresponding to the emissions from XLCT (HE band) and (X + M)LCT (LE band), respectively. The dual emission, which is attributed to the luminescence from both bands, was observed at around 178 K. The complex also displayed a change in luminescence color from bluish-green to yellow (λmax = 529 nm) upon applying external mechanical stimuli. The film containing [Cu2Br2(DIB)2(PPh2)2]n was prepared by a cast method using polymethyl methacrylate as a binding agent. The rubbed part of the film turned yellow and the other parts maintained bluish-green luminescence. Restoration of the initial color was feasible by annealing, even in film state.7p.     Syntheses and crystal structures of two piperine derivatives

    The title compounds, 5-(2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-N-cyclohexylpenta-2,4-dienamide, C18H21NO3 (I), and 5-(2H-1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-1-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)penta-2,4-dien-1-one C16H17NO3 (II), are derivatives of piperine, which is known as a pungent component of pepper. Their geometrical parameters are similar to those of the three polymorphs of piperine, which indicate conjugation of electrons over the length of the molecules. The extended structure of (I) features N—H O amide hydrogen bonds, which generate C(4) [010] chains. The crystal of (II) features aromatic π–π stacking, as for two of three known piperine polymorphs

    Effect of Rubbing on the Distribution of Topically Applied Drugs into the Hair Follicles

    Rubbing actions are often conducted to apply topical formulations onto the skin. Although rubbing was found to increase the skin permeation of drugs, few reports have revealed whether rubbing enhanced either drug permeation through the stratum corneum (SC) or hair follicles (HFs) pathways, or through both. In the present study, we investigated the effects of rubbing on caffeine (CAF) distribution in the SC and HFs. The effect of rubbing direction on the skin penetration of CAF was also investigated. The skin concentration of CAF and its cumulative permeation amount were increased clearly by rubbing. More than six times higher CAF concentrations in the viable epidermis and dermis were observed 5 min after rubbing application compared with no rubbing. On the other hand, slightly increased CAF concentrations were observed in the SC, suggesting that CAF was delivered through the HF pathway by rubbing. Rubbing against the natural hair direction provided the highest skin permeation as well as skin concentrations. Changes in the morphology of the HF opening area might be related to the enhancement effect. These results may provide useful information to understand the effect of rubbing on the skin permeation of applied drugs
