This paper examines the changes in generic skills of university students before and after their participation in a cross-faculty project-based learning (PBL) initiative. This PBL project was a collaboration between the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Faculty of Business Administration at Josai University. The project centered on the planning and development of a new Yokan (a traditional Japanese sweet bean jelly), conducted in cooperation with Ogano Town Hall and Kinoshita Seian Co. Department of Clinical Dietetics and Human Nutrition Students focused on examining the ingredients and adjusting the taste and texture of the Yokan. Faculty of Business Administration Students conducted market research and proposed product names and package designs. Students who participated in the project underwent two tests to measure their generic skills, one before and one after the project. The results showed significant improvements in specific skill areas: Clinical Dietetics and Human Nutrition Students: Showed significant improvements in “conceptualization skills.” Business Administration Students: Showed significant improvements in “problem-finding skills” and “emotional control skills.” This study highlights the positive impact of interdisciplinary PBL projects on the development of various generic skills among university students.論文 / Article

“Economy and Society” in Adorno’s Thought: Analysing his Seminar Protocols in the 1950s

    Get PDF
Recently published Adorno’s seminar protocols which comprise 4 volumes and over 2,000 pages (2021) provide us plentiful and inspiring sources about Adorno’s thought, which could not be seen in his books, lectures, essays and other published materials, and wider perspective on the history of “Frankfurt school” or the genesis of “Critical Theory (Kritische Theorie)” in the post-war Germany. In this paper, we explore the various interactions between Adorno and seminar participants (mainly students, but including Habermas, Negt, Schmidt, etc). This study explores Adorno’s seminar protocols recorded in the late 1950s, especially “economy and society” seminar in 1957/58 winter semester. It clarifies Adorno’s thought of the relationship between economy and society, through reports and discussions about Marxian economics, neoliberalism and modern economics. Through the examination of this seminar protocol, we found a fresh and unique thought of the economy, that is, “to survive (überleben)”. Simultaneously, this point of view suggests a critique of the economics and the economy itself. It could provide us another view of the economy, and the possibility of another constitution of society. However, to understand Adorno’s thought of the economy (and the society) precisely, a successive investigation of 1958 summer semester seminar protocol is needed.論文 / Treatise

Fostering Policy-Oriented Thinking in Policy Studies Education : A Case Study of the Introductory Class "Introduction to Policy Studies"

    Get PDF
This paper examines the development of policy-oriented thinking in policy studies educationthrough the author’s introductory class, “Introduction to Policy Studies.” The first session was designed tohelp students shift from a passive understanding of policy — “something made by governments” — to anactive one in which they recognize their own capacity to design mechanisms for social change. Startingfrom the question “What is policy?”, the class encouraged students to explore social issues based on theirpersonal interests and to formulate practical solutions through inquiry-based learning. As a result, students came to understand policy formation as a process involving diverse actors, includinggovernments, corporations, NPOs, and citizens, and began to see social problems as issues directlyconnected to their own lives. Through group discussions and proposal-making, they also developed theability to collaborate with others and to think critically about public issues. This practice demonstratesthat policy studies, beyond the acquisition of knowledge, serve as a form of practical learning that fosterssocial awareness and civic responsibility among students.
