Post-Covid-19 Care: (Long) Covid & Society
This podcast forms part of the interuniversity cluster project “Post Covid-19 Care” between the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna. It aims to facilitate conversations and engage in dialogues about the multifaceted concept of ‘care’ and socioeconomic dimensions, within the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond, and specifically Long Covid. Each episode features one or more academics or professionals from different areas discussing the meaning, the importance, the challenges and current changes of ‘care’ in their respective fields. Additionally, we will explore how we might look at Long Covid from these various perspectives of 'care'
Explaining Long-Term Bond Yields Synchronization Dynamics in Europe
We examine the empirical determinants of sovereign yield synchronization dynamics in the European Monetary Union. Using a time-varying measure of (long-term) government bond yields synchronization and Bayesian Model Averaging methods, we show that the persistence of synchronization measures differs significantly between GIIPS countries (Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain) and the rest of the monetary union, as well as across periods characterized by whether the zero lower bound of interest rates was binding or not and the post-Draghi whatever it takes era. The degree of synchronization in inflation rates with the rest of the currency area is a robust predictor of the synchronization of sovereign yields, as opposed to economic fundamentals describing the fiscal positions of individual countries. An out-of-sample forecasting exercise reveals that accounting for the most relevant economic fundamentals within the monetary union can lead to improvements in the directional accuracy of the forecasts of yield synchronization rates only for GIIPS countries.<br/
Social Justice at the Centre of Sustainable Projects Evaluation
This article puts into the spotlight a discussion on the transition towards climate change, by placing social justice at the centre of sustainable mobility projects evaluation. Until now, policies that seek to tackle climate change have disregarded the social component of sustainability. By undertaking a thorough literature research, we bring the discussion of Just Transition forward. Moreover, we examine climate actions through different perspectives which have been implemented at different levels: national, regional, or at local level. Through the previous analysis, we call for another vision of project appraisal in terms of just transition model
Conclusion: Implementation of Responsible Research and Innovation by Social Labs. Lessons from the Micro-, Meso- and Macro Perspective
In this concluding chapter, we want to take a broader perspective and, based on the contributions to this book, identify the key lessons from the NewHoRRIzon project about RRI implementation in general and via Social Labs in particular. From a bird’s eye perspective, the NewHoRRIzon Social Labs can be seen as interventions that depend on and are affected by several interrelated levels which might be separated roughly in the micro-level of Social Labs, the meso level of organisations, and the macro-level of national and European research and innovation systems and policy making
Perceptions of trust and power are associated with tax compliance: A cross-cultural study
The slippery slope framework (SSF) of tax compliance postulates that taxpayers’ compliance behaviour depends on the two dimensions: trust in authorities and power of authorities. In an attempt to overcome common-method biases, the present study tests the main assumptions of the SSF with a sample of 44 countries/regions. Country/region-level trust and power indices are calculated based on experimental data involving 14,509 participants and related to shadow economy estimates and – as an alternative indicator of non-compliance – corruption indices. The results indicate that both trust and power are negatively related to the size of the shadow economy and the extent of corruption. These results emphasise the importance of both SSF dimensions in combating tax evasion and counterproductive behaviour within a society in general
Fully Modified Least Squares Estimation and Inference for Systems of Cointegrating Polynomial Regressions
We consider fully modified least squares estimation for systems of cointegrating polynomial regressions, i. e., systems of regressions that include deterministic variables, integrated processes and their powers as regressors. The errors are allowed to be correlated across equations, over time and with the regressors. Whilst, of course, fully modified OLS and GLS estimation coincide - for any regular weighting matrix - without restrictions on the parameters and with the same regressors in all equations, this equivalence breaks down, in general, in case of parameter restrictions and/or different regressors across equations. Consequently, we discuss in detail restricted fully modified GLS estimators and inference based upon them
