Measuring Historical Thinking Ability: A Quantitative Study of Students on The Indonesia-Malaysia Border, Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan
This study aims to describe the process of history teaching and the HT skills of high school students in the Indonesia-Malaysia border region. The method used is quantitative with a descriptive case study approach. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and documentation, with the research subjects being Social Studies students at SMA Negeri 1 Sajingan Besar, Sambas, West Kalimantan. The data were analyzed descriptively using simple statistics. The history learning process in the border area is running well, with teachers using local content and engaging teaching media. Students showed a reasonably good level of HT skills, although there are still some gaps in discussion activities and report writing skills. Sequential and contextual history teaching helps students understand cause-and-effect relationships between events
Coffee, Community, and Capitalism: Analyzing Worker Economic Strategies at Blawan Plantation in East Java (2016-2022)
This article is written to discuss and describe the influence of the Blawan coffee plantation on the economic resilience of the workers' families in Kalianyar Village, Ijen Subdistrict, Bondowoso Regency (2016-2022) with an economic sociology approach. The theoretical framework used in this article is the theory of social change. Methodologically, the article uses the historical method, which includes heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. From the results of the research, it is known that the Blawan coffee plantation became the foundation of hope for workers in Kalianyar village to meet the economic needs of the family and the workers can be involved in activities in the plantation starting from the production process, plant maintenance, coffee harvesting process, and post-harvest coffee handling. From these major activities, the laborers get income to help the family economy. The conclusion is that the Blawan coffee plantation is the foundation of the laborers' hopes to improve the family economy
Application of Digital Comic ‘History of Bestie and Bosque’ Prehistoric Period in Class X Students of SMA Negeri 10 Samarinda
This study aims to understand the application of digital comic media ‘Sejarah Bestie dan Bosque’ in learning prehistoric history in class X students of SMA Negeri 10 Samarinda. This research uses qualitative methodology with a case study approach. Data were obtained through interviews with both teachers and students, classroom observation and documentation. Data validity was carried out by means of data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing or verification. The results revealed that the use of digital comics ‘Sejarah Bestie dan Bosque’ strengthened students understanding of prehistoric material through interactive and fun visualisation. Students welcomed this digital comic as an innovative media. The results of this study are expected to provide practical insights for the development of history learning media that are more effective and relevant to technological developments, as well as input for schools to consider the integration of digital media in learning
Aceh's Multicultural Society in The Dutch Colonial Era: A Historical Study Of Modernization, Diversity And Inter-Ethnic Relations
This article aims to explain the modernization that occurred in Aceh during the Dutch colonial era and the diversity that emerged as a result of modernization, as well as to explain the relations between ethnic groups in Aceh during the Dutch colonial era, especially between the Acehnese and Minangkabau ethnic groups. This research is a library research with a descriptive analysis type. Modernization in Aceh during the Dutch colonial era occurred in at least three aspects, namely infrastructure modernization, especially highways and railways, economic modernization marked by the opening of large-scale plantations and educational modernization. The modernization of infrastructure, economy and education carried out by the Dutch in Aceh has caused a wave of migration from outside Aceh, thus having an impact on increasing ethnic diversity in Aceh. Relations between ethnic groups, especially between Acehnese and Minangkabau, have not been good, where there is negative prejudice from Acehnese people towards Minangkabau people due to historical prejudice factors, discrimination and excessive feelings of superiority
The “Sweetness” of Coffee for Jeme Pagar Alam, South Sumatra
Abstract Indonesia, known as an agrarian nation, relies heavily on agriculture as the foundation of its economy and a provider of basic human needs. Among its agricultural subsectors, plantations particularly coffee hold strategic economic, social, and cultural significance. In South Sumatra’s Pagar Alam, situated at the foothills of Mount Dempo, coffee cultivation has long been the cornerstone of the local economy. For the indigenous Jeme Pagar Alam community, coffee represents both livelihood and cultural heritage, reflecting generations of agricultural tradition. Despite its economic contributions, challenges such as limited productivity, poor infrastructure, and restricted market access persist. This study examines the socio-economic impacts of coffee cultivation on the Jeme Pagar Alam people in Dempo Utara District from 1997 to 2023, focusing on production trends, pricing, and cultivation practices to reveal the enduring “sweetness” of coffee in sustaining local life
De Javasche Bank Nationalization Policy: From Private Bank to Bank Indonesia, 1951-1953
This article examines the nationalization policy by the Indonesian government towards foreign private banks owned by the Dutch East Indies colonial government to become Bank Indonesia in the period of 1951-1953. De Javasche Bank was nationalized because having significant power in the economic, political and monetary sector, being a source of livelihood, and wealth. The article uses the historical method consisting of four stages, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation and historiography. Throughout this research, the validity is obtained that on 30 April 1951, the Minister of Finance, Yusuf Wibisono, had plans to nationalize De Javasche Bank. On 2 July 1951, the Prime Minister Sukiman formed the De Javasche Bank Nationalization Committee. Sumitro Djojohadikusumo, the new Minister of Finance, submitted a draft law regarding the nationalization of De Javasche Bank on 22 August 1952 and it was approved on 10 April 1953 with the provisions of Law no. 11 of 1953
Implementation of Spice Route History Materials in Grade 11 History Instruction at SMA Negeri 6 Samarinda
The purpose of this study was to investigate how the history of the Spice Route was taught in grade XI at SMA Negeri 6 Samarinda. The main focus of this study was on how the materials were implemented and the challenges faced when using the spice route materials for teaching. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the learning process, this study combined descriptive methods with qualitative approaches. Direct observation, teacher and student interviews, and supporting documentation were some of the data collection methods. The findings of the study indicate that the use of spice route materials for teaching history at SMA Negeri 6 Samarinda is quite effective. Teachers' learning planning prepares Learning Outcomes (LO), Learning Objective References (LOR), and teaching modules. The stages of implementing teacher learning use lecture and discussion learning methods. The evaluation given by the teacher is an essay assignment, students are asked to relate ocean exploration to the spice route. The obstacles experienced are the lack of diverse learning methods, the lack of student activity, and the teacher is too fast in explaining the material
Innovative Learning Design Assisted by Comic Media in Social Studies
Learning innovation in social studies learning is important, especially for designing learning. This study aims to examine the effectiveness and relevance of comic media as a tool for developing social studies learning. This study uses a literature study method by analyzing various indexed and accredited journals that highlight the use of comics in social studies learning. The results indicate that comics in addition increase students' interest in learning but also help in understanding complex concepts through visualization. Comic media, when combined with innovative learning strategies, can have a positive impact on student learning outcomes in social studies learning
Comparative Study on the Role of Character Education in Shaping Social Studies Curricula in Japan and Indonesia
This study explores the character values as the foundation for Social Studies curriculum development through a comparative analysis between Indonesia and Japan. Employing a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis of official curriculum documents, the research reveals that both nations place strong emphasis on character formation, though shaped by distinct historical, cultural, and philosophical contexts. Japan’s approach is deeply rooted in a consistent and centralized education system that blends constitutional nationalism, cultural collectivism, and Bushidō ethics into daily school life. Meanwhile, Indonesia has experienced a dynamic transformation from ideological and centralized models to more flexible, contextual, and culturally responsive curricula, particularly under the Merdeka Curriculum. The findings underscore the need for localized pedagogical strategies and enhanced teacher competencies to effectively translate character education into practice, enabling the development of socially responsible, globally aware citizens grounded in national values
Digital Disruption in Transportation: Gojek's Entry and Growth in Makassar (2015-2020)
PT. Gojek Indonesia, a technology company founded in 2011 by Nadiem Makarim and Kevin Aluwi, introduced online transportation services to Indonesia, starting with GoRide, a modern motorcycle taxi service. This research employs a historical method with four steps: Heuristics, Criticism, Interpretation, and Historiography. Gojek officially began operations on August 8, 2015, receiving an enthusiastic response from the public. Its presence improved urban mobility, offering easy access and affordable rates, supported by professional and friendly drivers. Unlike traditional motorcycle taxis, Gojek provides both passenger and goods transportation services, as well as shopping and food delivery options. The Gojek application offers various services, including GoRide, GoSend, GoFood, GoCar, GoMart, and GoBox.. Gojek's entry into Makassar aimed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility in the city. The company obtained necessary permits and coordinated with relevant stakeholders before launching its services. Gojek's presence has significantly impacted the transportation landscape in Makassar, providing a convenient, affordable, and reliable alternative to traditional transportation modes while also contributing to job creation and economic growth
