Cirebon and Geertz\u27s Trichotomy: Exploration of Anti-Structure Folklore in Javanese Culture

PurposeGeertz\u27s trichotomy serves as a guide for reading (1) how the priyayi, santri, and abangan categories are structured in the representations of the meanings of the folklore studied and (2) how these representations are connected to Sunan Gunung Jati and Sheikh Siti Jenar. MethodThis article used a qualitative descriptive method. Folklore data was obtained from interviews, documentation, observation, and literature reviews. Results/findingsCirebon batik is produced in the Syattariyah order tradition. This statement contradicted the description of Cirebon batik, which contained the meaning of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti (the union of a servant with his God) which embraces an anti-structural typology of structures originating from Sheikh Siti Jenar.  ConclusionThe anti-structural nature of Cirebon batik merges Geertz\u27s trichotomy into a new category, namely kawula, before God. The doctrine of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti acts as the knowledge that directly forms batik patterns and is still connected to the Syattariyah order if we place Sheikh Datul Kahfi as the figure who brought this order to Cirebon. The elaboration of all these conclusions shows Cirebon\u27s position as a mixed type in Geertz\u27s trichotomy

Problematizing Contemporary Islamic Discourse: A Conceptual Modeling of New Heroes in Indonesian Islamic Biographical Films

PurposeThis study problematizes the interconnectedness between religion and media once again within the context of Indonesian biopics. This paper looks at the pattern of transformation of two Islamic elite-authoritative figures into Islamic-popular heroes that are thematically intertwined with Islamic discourse in Indonesia’s reform era. MethodThe research in this article combines several theoretical concepts by examining the relationship between text and context. The social semiotic paradigm of Kress becomes the main theory for disecting the text, while the concept of cultural commodities from Fiske and discourse formation from Foucault become the frame of reference for viewing the relationship between text and context. Results/findingsThe binary modes in those two biopics are not identical, according to this article, but both have transformed the stable concept of historical figures into more complex ones that generate polysemic ideas from an ideological standpoint. This article also explains how the process of meaning formation in the film\u27s two Islamic figures are affected by three entities forming a three-party dialectic model. ConclusionIn the case of two biopics, Sang Pencerah (2010) and Sang Kiai (2013), this article confirms a dynamic model of conceptual design that connects texts and context. It demonstrates the existence of some variables that contribute to the polarization of contemporary Islam discourses in Indonesia

There are also three portray-als of librarian in the film: librarian is a female profession, has dominating power over library users, and is quiet and unapproachable.ConclusionThe representations of libraries and librarians in the film show consistency and sustainability in how the media represents libraries and the librarianship profession, which influences public per-ception. Such knowledge continuously reinforced through the media shows that the public still needs to familiarize themselves with libraries and librarianship. The negative image in various media is a challenge that must be faced for the sustainability of this field and is expected to reflect how the public views libraries and their profession
