Ritual, Religion, and Reform: The Impact of Khuruj on the Tablighi Jamaat Community
PurposeThis article examined the impact of Khurûj, a ritual practice of the Tablighi Jamaat, on personal transformation and community solidarity. Khurûj, practiced as a form of worship, aims to encourage adherence to Islamic teachings and foster brotherhood among Muslims. This activity served as a means of both self and communal reform, enhancing individual influence within the community and building a sense of belonging and support MethodThrough a qualitative study of the Tablighi Jamaat community in Jakarta, this research highlighted how Khurûj influenced personal development, deepens spiritual experiences, and strengthens communal bonds. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with members who participated in Khurûj for more than five years, and participatory observation during Khurûj activities. Thematic analysis revealed key themes such as personal transformation, spiritual growth, and enhanced community solidarity Results/findingsThe study underscored the crucial role of ritual interactions in reinforcing social bonds and religious identity among members. Despite perceptions of isolationism, the findings show significant social engagement, including efforts to combat drug use and provide community services, demonstrating a positive contribution to broader society ConclusionThe concludes that Khurûj is valuable for fostering religious adherence and community cohesion, and further research is needed to explore its long-term impacts and influence in different socio-political context
Tawhid, Worship, and Noble Morals in the Hikayat Nabi Isa
PurposeThe main objective of this research was to reveal the Islamic teachings in the Hikayat Nabi Isa manuscript. MethodThis qualitative study employed a descriptive research design. The philological method used was the legger method. Content analysis in this study uses textual and contextual analysis. The primary data source was the manuscript of Hikayat Nabi Isa (hereinafter referred to as HNI) in the collection of the French National Library with the code Malayo-Polynesien 68. The research data was collected using reading and note writing technique. Results/findingsThis study revealed the Islamic teachings that the HNI text demonstrated encompassed tawhid (aqidah), worship (sharia), and noble morals (akhlaqul karimah). Conclusion The HNI manuscript was a highly readable manuscript that was well-preserved and easily accessible. The HNI text narrated the history of Prophet Isa and conveyed the Islamic teachings, which included the teachings of aqidah, sharia, and morals
Translation Equivalence Degrees among Indonesian EFL Undergraduate Students
PurposeThe way to produce an equivalent translation text appears hard that every translation work should engage with diverse language and cultural systems. The issues are expected to affect both translation students and professional translators. Therefore, this current work aims to discover in-depth information about translation equivalence degrees among Indonesian EFL undergraduate students.MethodThis study employed qualitative content analysis. The research data included documentation of the translation texts from English into the Indonesian language, which resulted in 22 students majoring in English education at a public university in Banten Province, Indonesia. The source language texts were derived from the news-item texts published in national newspapers. The data analysis procedure comprised comparing the two texts, classifying, discussing, drawing conclusions, and making interpretations. Results/findingsThe study of the translation texts revealed that 11 texts (50%) referred to near-optimal translation, six texts (27%) to partial translation, and five texts (23%) to poor translation.ConclusionGiven that none of the students\u27 translation outputs achieved the optimal equivalency; this conclusion suggests that students\u27 translation knowledge and skills still need to be improved by regular practice and discussion at each translation course meeting
Ma’had Aly Lecturers’ Research and Publication Activities: Challenges and Prospects
PurposeIn Islamic higher education, Ma\u27had Aly lecturers rarely performed research and publication activities. The study aimed to explore Ma’had Aly lecturers’ in conducting research and publishing scholarly works activities.MethodThis qualitative study used a case study design whose data collection techniques utilized in-depth interviews and a review of relevant articles. The informants comprised four Ma\u27had Aly lecturers taken purposively.Results/findingsThe findings revealed problems that caused lecturer Ma\u27had Aly to rarely carry out research and publication activities. In terms of personnel problems, apart from the fact that Ma\u27had Aly lecturers had not only adequate knowledge regarding research and publications, but they were also burdened with a heavy teaching load and other non-academic activities. Meanwhile, in terms of institutional problems, Ma\u27had Aly could not create a conducive atmosphere for lecturers to perform research and publication activities.Conclusion Research and publication are important for Ma\u27had Aly lecturers for their professional development. Therefore, both Ma\u27had Aly management and the Ministry of Religion should make various efforts to accelerate the research and publication competency improvement of Ma\u27had Aly lecturers.
Bird of Minerva Havoc in Hiaasen\u27s Hoot
PurposeThis research aimed to study the connection and its consequences of massive development, particularly on the urban areas, towards burrowing owl\u27s population decline and its effect. MethodThe qualitative method was applied to assist the data analysis process in this research. The data are taken from narrative and dialogue within the story. Ecocriticism theory is also implemented to help analyze the effect of urbanization in the story. Results/findingsThe research found that urbanization has dreadful consequences on environment. Urbanization not only drives burrowing owl\u27s decline in population, it also disrupts the food chain system, and affects the population of pest. ConclusionThe study concluded that the effects of urbanization have a broader impact for the environment. Its negative impact can cause mayhem for human life. In accordance with that, this research suggests that urbanization must be planned carefully and consider the effect for the nature and ecosystem.
The Arab Ethnic Identity Politics in Indonesia: A Female Representation in Fatat Qarut and Fatimah
PurposeThis research sought to delve into the representation of Arab women in \u27Fatat Qarut\u27 and \u27Fatimah\u27 as well as conducting a comparative analysis upon the textual ideologies instilled in both works.MethodThis research was a qualitative study utilizing descriptive analysis. A documentation technique was used as data collection means concentrating on specific passages within the text in order to uncover the strategies employed in representing women through textual quotations. Technically, the quotations were analysed using a comparative literature framework and feminist literary criticism. FindingsThis research demonstrated that the two texts present different portrayals of women based on the narrative strategy used. This variance was attributed to the generational gap between the two authors. \u27Fatat Qarut\u27 depicts women as superior and independent, whereas \u27Fatimah\u27 portrays women as inferior and submissive. ConlcusionThe study conlcudes these depictions highlight that the role and status of women within the Arab ethnic group are shaped and dominated by social and cultural stratification
Language of Resistance: Linguistic Landscape in the Protest of Kanjuruan Tragedy, Indonesia
PurposeLinguistics landscape (LL) is not only a means of showing the identity of a language but also a constructive effort to fight for justice for society. Landscape in this study is a form of protest against security forces for the loss of life of 135 Aremania fans after watching a soccer match between Arema and Persebaya at the Kanjuruan stadium. This research aims, apart from mapping all signs from aspects of language use patterns, also to conduct a critical analysis of the language used. MethodThis study uses quantitative and qualitative methods based on documentation in the form of billboards, boards, and banners installed in various parts of Malang, Indonesia. Content analysis and critical analysis are used to analyze this research. Results/findingsThe findings of this study show that the language used in the landscape has two forms, monolingual and bilingual. In addition, it indicates that four languages are used in the sign. Indonesian has a higher quantity than English, Javanese, and Arabic. ConclusionThe language pattern used in the landscape tends to reflect sarcasm, cynicism, and rhetoric. This research suggests conducting a follow-up study that examines the same sign in the broader area, including Malang district and East Java region, to obtain varied data and various sign patterns. Thus the data information obtained is more comprehensive
Moderation of Islam and Modern Western Culture: A Postcolonial Studies of Salah Asuhan Novel
PurposeAmong the controversial issues in the 20th century, even today, was the Islam\u27s relationship with modern Western culture, whether it should be rejected, accepted, or critically accepted (adaptive adoption patterns). This article discussed this topic based on a study of Salah Asuhan by Abdoel Moeis as Idonesian Novel which was published in 1928. MethodThe study was conducted using a qualitative research method based on literature research enriched by a study of scientific literature. The theory used is the theory of postcolonialism and the construction of religious moderation of Islam. Results/findingsThis research found that the Salah Asuhan Novel was a construction of the author\u27s moderate attitude towards Islam, its relationship with modern Western culture. In it, there was not only Moeis resistance to modern Western culture as a domination and a product of colonialism, but also adaptive adoption (hybridity), in which modern Western culture in general had to be handled by sorting/selecting. The pattern of Islamic moderation in the sense of a middle way was mostly adopted by Moeis, although moderation was also adopted in the sense of emphasizing on upholding justice, considering the public benefit, especially eliminating inhuman difficulties as a point of view. ConclusionIn cultural issues, Moeis in the novel tended to have to not fully accept modern Western culture. For example on science and technology, humanism, including feminism, the importance of legal evidence such as marriage with a legal marriage certificate, and educational patterns that emphasize religion, but also modern science
Ideologies in English-Indonesian Dissertation Abstracts Translation: An Explanatory Case Study
PurposeThe study aimed to reveal how the students applied the ideology of domestication and foreignization in producing Indonesian-English dissertation abstracts on Islamic studies.MethodUsing a qualitative approach with an explanatory case study design, it relied on Indonesian and English abstracts as the primary data sources, taken randomly from the repository of UIN Jakarta. As the main instrument, the researcher compared the English abstracts to Indonesian ones syntactically and lexically to identify the implemented strategies that reflect the translation ideology of domestication and foreignization.Result/FindingThe study revealed that in translating sentences from the SL to the TL, the dominant strategies involving some lexical and grammatical changes were a reader-oriented process; while in translating culture-specific items from the SL to the TL, the dominant strategies were a writer-oriented process with fewer changes or adaptation.ConclusionThe study concludes that the foreignization ideology dominates translating culture specific items, while the domestication ideology hegemonies translating sentences of the dissertation abstracts.
Optimizing Pilgrimage Traditions and Community Empowerment: Integration of Spirituality, Socio-Economy, and Technology in Pilgrimage Practices
PurposeThis study aimed to explore the optimalization of pilgrimage tradition by integrating social and economic empowerment and the use of technology to enhance spiritual experience, cultural resilience, and their role in strengthening social cohesion. MethodThe study employed a literature review and a theoretical analysis on the concepts of pilgrimage, cultural resilience, and religious tourism in the context of modernization and technology. This study used multi-dimensional approach to analyze the modernization of pilgrimage tradition. Here, this research used the digital technology, while maintaining its spiritual essence and socio-cultural resilience. FindingsThe Findings of the study showed that the pilgrimage tradition and religious tourism can have some contributions. They are empowering local economies through community-based management, strengthening cultural resilience by preserving traditional values, and using technology to improve an accessibility into the quality of spiritual experiences. Additionally, pilgrimage serves as a social interaction platform that fosters harmony in multicultural societies. ConclusionThe optimization of religious tourism supports not only local economic growth, but also cultural preservation, national character building, and the maintenance of social harmony in Indonesia, while preserving its spiritual essence
