    Get PDF
The local interpretation of the Qur’an cannot be ignored in the discourse of Qur’anic studies in Indonesia. Its significance lays not only in the continuity of Islamic tradition networks, but also in the creativity of linguistic expression and its content of local wisdom relevant with the need of society.  This study tries to shed light on the Sundanese cultural nuance in Sundanese Qur’anic interpretation. There are at least three elements which indicate Sundanese cultural nuance which becomes the characteristic of local reception of the Qur’an in Sundanese Qur’anic interpretation: the use of speech level, traditional expression and the metaphore of Sundanese nature. These three elements can be used as the first categorization to classify Sundanese Qur’anic interpretation as Sundanese.

oai:ojs.pkp.sfu.ca:article/1154The textual interpretation of the Qur’an has been considered as the most valid and authoritative method in interpreting the Qur’an. However, this method has many weaknesses because it can produce intolerant and exclusive religious attitude. Therefore, an interpreter needs to consider not only the analysis of the text of the Qur’an but also its context of revelation. This statement is proven by analyzing the interpretation of Nasir al-Sa’di on inter religious relation. The data is first analyzed using the thematic approach. This approach is used to collect verses related to interreligious relation. In the next step, this interpretation is analyzed by contextual approach as proposed by Abdullah Saeed

The ideological bias in Qur’anic interpretation cannot be fully eliminated. Its existence, however, cannot be ignored, because it can be reduced. The historical interpretation -- considered by some – can respond to this ideological challenge. To prove this statement, this writer will describe Sayyid Qutb’s interpretation in his political concept, especially hakimiyyah or God’s sovereignity in his Fi Zilal al-Qur’an. The ta’wil of Abu Zayd, enriched by the critical discourse analyses and social cognition of van Dijk, will be used to prove that the more ahistorical an interpretation is the more ideological it is

There has been a shift of paradigm between the classical Muslim scholars and the modern Muslim scholars in analyzing the Qur’an. The classical scholars preferred theological paradigm, while the modern scholars prefer academic and critical studies. In analyzing the Arabicity of Qur’anic language, the classical scholars argued that all language of the Qur’an are pure Arabic language. They based their argument on the verses of the Qur’an, and also on the theological view on the origin of Qur’anic language.  The modern scholars, on the other hand, argue for the existence of foreign words in the Qur’an. This view is based on the fact that the Qur’anic language is historical and cultural language, eventhough they do not deny its divine origin. In this article, the writer analyzes the view of Sa’d ‘Abd al-Mutallib al-‘Adl in his al-Hiruglifiyah Tufassir Al-Qur\u27an Sharh ma Yusamma bi al-Huruf al-Muqatta’ah which seeks to find the historical root of the Qur’an in Old Egyptian civilization to prove the use of Old Egyptian terms in the Qur’an.

To determine the authenticity of hadith, we need to analyze its chain of transmission and its content. The analysis of the chain of transmission is conducted through the data collection in the literature of tarajum al-ruwat, by analyzing the concept used in sanad criticism. Among the critique of hadith, some scholars used a concept generally used by others, but they understand it differently. Others use special concept not usually used by others, without explaining what they mean by that concept. There are also others who explain the biography of the hadith transmitters, without explaining their qualities,  Al-Bukhari (d. 265 H) is among the ciritique of hadith who use these three concepts. This article, using content analysis methodology, tries to analyze and understand these three concepts

The major problem discussed in this article is the presence of domestic violence conducted by husbands towards their wives in their marriages. Several verses of the Qur’an have been used to legitimize these arrogant actions. Using religious texts and culture of patriarchy, domestic violence seems to persist. This article discusses the interpretation of some verses of the Qur’an, especially the mystical interpretation, which is related to the rights of wives in marriage. Two mystical interpretations are the case of the study, i.e., Ruh al-Ma‘ani of al-Alusi and al-Fawatih al-Ilahiyya of al-Jilani. This article describes analytically and critically explores the ideas of al-Jilani and al-Alusi about women’s rights in Islam

    Feminist Reinterpretation of the Qur’an

This article argues that no Qur’anic interpretation is objective. Qur’anic interpretation is influenced by the interest, values and the background of its interpreters. This article will identify some of the biases in the existing Qur’anic interpretations, which are mostly written by male scholars, on gender issues such as the first human creation and male leadership, and will re-interpret the verses from equal gender perspective. This article will also argue that the correct interpretation is the one which is closer to the fundamental teaching of Islam, mainly equality and justice. Only Allah knows the ma‘na (the real/correct meaning) of the haqiqi Qur’an, but if Muslims believe that Allah is just, then it is impossible for Allah to reveal its message in the Qur’an to support injustice. Therefore, if Muslims interpret the Qur’an to support injustice, then their interpretations may be incorrect because they contradict the nature of God, who is just

Some of the ulama’s views related to women (the origin of creation, temptressness and lack of rationality), are considered to be biased and misogynistic by M. Quraish Shihab. These viewpoints, according to Shihab, rooted in long-standing old views that harrassed and marginalized women. These views cannot be justified either by reasons or religion, although some of them used religious texts. This article addresses Shihab’s criticism against the views of scholars that he considers to be biased. The data are obtained from the works of M. Quraish Shihab, particularly on Perempuan in addition to al-Misbah. The data are analyzed using content analysis and gender perspectives.
