The results showed that there were 38 tribes and 53 types of plants. The most widely used plant parts were leaves (44.3%), the least were roots (0.7%), and the reason for using plants as traditional medicine in self-medication was easily obtained (53.8%)
TRIGONELLA FOENUM : A REVIEW OF HYPOGLYCEMIC ACTIVITY
Treatment of diabetes mellitus is intended to reduce the risk of blindness, kidney failure, neuropathy and heart disease that can develop due to the chronic increase in the blood glucose level. The selected hypoglycemic agents should be effective, safe and readily available. The widely used agents work by interrupting enzymes responsible for glucose regulation. Those enzymes are -amilase, -glucosidase, dipeptidyl peptidase-IV, aldose reductase and angiotensin converting enzyme. A medicinal plant, fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum) has been used as an antidiabetic folk medicine. This review provides information related to in vitro studies showing antihyperglycemic activity of fenugreek along with an in vivo study in animals. In addition, potential phytochemicals that have been isolated from this plant are described and play a role in the searching for the most potent agents for diabetes mellitus therapy
CULTIVATION CONDITIONS FOR PROTEASE PRODUCTION BY A THERMO-HALOSTABLE BACTERIAL ISOLATE PLS A
Polyextremophiles have increasingly been utilised to produce thermostable enzymes with better stability in multiple extreme conditions. This study reports the screening results of four new bacterial isolates (PLS A, PLS 75, PLS 76 and PLS 80), isolated from an under water hot springs, in producing thermo-halostable protease enzyme. Optimum cultivation conditions for the protease production were also studied. Screening of protease-producing isolates was conducted using Thermus solid medium enriched with 3% skim milk and 0.5% casein. The growth of the isolates showing protease activity was monitored by measuring the cell dry weight and protease activity during 24 h cultivation period. The activity was also measured at various cultivation conditions, i.e. temperature, pH and salt concentrations. Amongst the four isolates, only PLS A showed the ability to produce protease. The optimum cultivation conditions for protease production were observed at 65C, pH 7 for 18 h incubation. The activity increased with the addition of 1% NaCl concentration (0.085 Unit/mL). The ability of PLS A isolate to produce thermo-halostable protease was encouraging as they could potentially be used in industries requiring the enzyme with multiple extremes
PURIFICATION OF BIODIESEL USING RICE STRAW AND DIOSCOREA ALATA STARCH AS NATURAL ADSORBENTS
Janeng starch (Dioscorea Alata) and rice straws are developed to be used as adsorbents in dry washing method to purify crude biodiesel. In this study, we evaluate the potential of rice straw and janeng starch as natural adsorbents in the purification of biodiesel that replace the role of water in absorbing contaminants from biodiesel. The SEM characterization results show that the starch adsorbent and rice straw has an open and porous surface and is evenly distributed for janeng starch. Both adsorbents, either the janeng starch or rice straw, can be applied for the purification of biodiesel. The quality of biodiesel is influenced by the amount of adsorbents used in biodiesel purification. The effectiveness of the adsorbent is shown by the decrease in free fatty acids, alkali numbers, soap numbers and turbidity levels in biodiesel. The concentration of free fatty acid oil in crude biodiesel before the purification step was 0.769 mg-KOH/g, then decreased to 0.128 mg-KOH/g after the adsorption. This acid value had been very low and met the Indonesian quality national standard for biodiesel spesically 0.50 mg-KOH/g. Either janeng starch or rice straw adsorbent was able to reduce the soap content of potassium oleate to level 53.33 ppm from the initial content of 106.67 ppm. These two natural adsorbents can be the alternative adsorbents in the purification of biodiesel that employs dry washing method
ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF ETHYL ACETATE EXTRACT OF NUTMEG (Myristica fragrans Houtt) STEM BARK
Antioxidant activity test for the extract of ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark (Myristica fragransHoutt) was carried out using 2,2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazil (DPPH). The test results of antioxidant activity of ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark extract with DPPH method at a concentration of 25 ppm, 50 ppm and 100 ppm obtained IC50 value = 68.14 ppm with IC50 value of vitamin C (as positive control) 3.657 ppm. The results of column chromatographic separation of ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark extract obtained 5 combined fractions namely MFEK 1, MFEK 2, MFEK 3, MFEK 4 and MFEK 5. The test results of the fraction antioxidant activity in a good category were the MFEK 1 fraction. The MFEK 2 fraction to MFEK 5 showed an antioxidant activity lower than compared to the ethyl acetate extract. This shows that the ethyl acetate nutmeg stem bark extract has a better inhibitory activity, because there are several active compounds contained in the extract which can inhibit free radicals, so the IC50 value of the extract is better than the fractions

WINSTON-BATAN: A SEISMOLOGICAL GROUND-MOTION ANALYSIS CODE
A thorough understanding of an earthquake is very important to provide a descriptive knowledge and in the same time as a prescriptive knowledge for the future development. In particular, it is essential for site selection and structural design development of nuclear reactor and other critical facilities. Ground motion acceleration time history is an important raw information to understand the earthquake and specific geological condition of where the data is recorded. This paper presented the development of strong-motion analysis code, called Winston-BATAN, which able to interpret ground motion time history. The analysis scope of the code including the ground motion parameters such as peak ground acceleration, several additional seismic intensity parameters, strong motion duration, its frequency content via Fast Fourier Transformation and response spectra analysis. Being developed based on an open source Python programming language, Winston-BATAN is flexible for exploratory study to exploit the ground motion time history and easily improve to accommodate additional features. This code able to read input from PEER NGA type file or a simple time and acceleration data type of ground motion. Analysis results of Winston-BATAN shows a very good agreement compare to the results from the standard tools Seismosignal 2018 Software, in addition flexibility of this code, in particular, to explore the response spectra from the ground motion time history is demonstrated
