Principal component analysis for identifying period of seasons in Indonesia
The seasonal variability of Indonesian rainfall is almost entirely controlled by the Asian monsoon and so displays two distinct seasons, i.e. wet and dry seasons with transition periods in between. The onset of the monsoon varies with places, therefore, when dealing with seasonal rainfall, different researchers/authors have different way referring to the seasons. Hence, one definition may not be appropriate for all places. This problem creates a necessity for identifying the period of the season so that it can be used for Indonesia as a whole.This paper examines the spatial variation of the seasons over the Indonesia region and demonstrates the application of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to solve the above mentioned problem, namely to identify the period of the seasons in Indonesia as a unity. The analysis is performed using monthly rainfall data from 63 stations spread across the country covering the period of 1947 to 1999 (52 years).The results support the fact that the wet season onset starts early in the northwestern part of Sumatra and propagates eastward and southward. It is not surprising if the north-western part of the country experiences a longer wet season than the east-northern part does. It is also shown that PCA is a useful tool for identifying the period of the season in Indonesia. Through the analysis, it is found that there are three types of rainfalls which have important influence on the year to year variation of the annual rainfall, i.e: the wet season (December to March), the dry season (May to September), and the dry-to-wet transition (October to November)
The challenges of urban management in Uganda
The urban areas in Uganda are increasingly getting under pressure from a rapidly growing population. The challenge of a growing population has coincided with the central government policies that favour rural districts more than urban areas.The challenges that the urban areas face include the problem of two populations (the night and day time); high generation of garbage; poor revenue base; a growing informal sector; growing squatter settlements; deterioratingwater quality; and the limited institutional capacity to provide the required urban services. Financial resource mobilisation has been inadequate due to high costs oft= administration, low institutional capacity for enforcement, and a general public apathy to tax payment

Geomorphological mapping of the San Lorenzo area Sant'arcangelo region Southern Italy
The study area is located in the Sant'arcangelo region, Southern Italy. The area was developed from late Pliocene to middle Pleistocene in the southern part of the Apenines chain. It has also been defined as a piggy back basin filled with siliciclastic deposits, controlled by sedimentary tectonic activity.This article aims to identify the geological condition and generating geomorphological map for San Lorenzo area using aerial photo (scale 1:15000) and Panchromatic SPOT image (Scale 1:66000). Image interpretation was also done to identify morphological, structural and processes.The Sant'Arcangelo region is composed of 4 cycles both marine and continental in origin, all deposited on different environments: The Caliandro, Agri, San Lorenzo and Sauro cycles. The study area consists of Sauro and San Lorenzo Cycle. Sauro Cycle is Comprises of three heterotrophic units deposited in sintectonic discordance over the Agri cycle. San Lorenzo Cycle lying in unconformity over the precedent cycles is consisting of three units, namely conglomerates on the base part as well as on the top part of the sequence, and silty clays in the intermediate part. They form a syncline structure which ax has a NW-SE direction. The main structural features are represented by the San Lorenzo syncline and the Alianello fault. The San Lorenzo area has three principal origins: alluvial, denudation, and structural. Due to the geological-tectonic complexity, the structural landform is normally found as structural denudational landform. San Lorenzo area comprises of 41 landform units, namely 3 units of alluvial landforni, 26 units of denudational landform and 11 units of structural denudational landform
Social Facilities Provision And Rural Development Relationships On The Jos Plateau-Nigeria
The study has measured the levels of social facilities provision in the rural areas of the Jos Plateau Region of Nigeria. Over 60 dependent and independent variables were employed in determining the rural development index (RUDEVI). Social sectors covered include health care, educational, water supply, rural roads, places of worship and other general welfare infrastructure and services. The various levels of rural development indices of the 86 communities studied were subjected to analysis of variances (ANOVA), correlation and regression using population size as the focal variable. It was found that population is not a major factor used in the sitting of social facilities in the rural areas of Jos Plateau, which is not supposed to be the case
GEOMORPHOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE MURIA PALAEOSTRAIT IN RELATION TO THE MORPHODYNAMICS OF THE WULAN DELTA, CENTRAL JAVA
The research area is situated in the Demak, Jepara, Pati and Kudusregencies of the CentralJava Province. The objectives of the research are: (1) theinvestigation of the geomorphologic development of the Muria Palaeo-Strait inCentral Java and (2) the analysis of the morphodynamicsof the WulanDelta. Amorphographic- morphogeneticapproach was used to interpret the genesJsandsubsequent evolution of the coastal lowlands in the surroundings of the MuriaVolcano. The data analysis techniques, based on cause-effect assessment andanalogy, were implemented in four steps, such as: (a) descriptive, (b) comparative,.(c) associative and (d) causative stages. The results of the research can besummarized as follows: The coastal plain situated to the south of the MuriaVolcano was originally a shallow strait and subsequently became a mangrovecoveredtidal flat with many creeks. Ultimately this tidal flat evolved into analluvial/coastal plain with natural levees and back swamps. The coastal area in thewest was still inundated by the sea around 6,000 yrs BP. This is evidenced by the14C-dating 6,530 + 120 yrs BP of a coral reef situated at 25 cms a.s.l. The presentbeach ridge has an age 4,600 + 100 yrs BP and originated as a barrier bar. Thecoastal area in the east is characterized by the occurrence of four sequential beachridge complexes at elevations of 580, 520, 220 and 125 cms respectively. Theyhave been 14C-dated 5,860 + 110 yrs BP, 5,090 + 100 yrs BP, 3,530 + 100 yrs BPand 1,760 + 120 yrs BP. Since 1,760 yrs BP nofurther beach ridges wereformed,a tidal flat developed instead. The shape of the Wulan Delta changed from actuateto digit ate in the period of 1925 - 1995, mainly due to human interference with theriver for purposes of irrigation. The growth of the Wulan Delta affected the hydrodynamical situation offshore of Jepara. These hydrodynamic changes resulted inmarine erosion in the rural areas in the Jepara Regency and chewier formation inthe rural areas of the Demak Regency
THE URBANIZATION IN SEMARANG CITY
Thepurpose thispaper is to provide a broad overview of the recent patternsand trends of urban growth, and to discuss the relationship between urbanization,economic and population growth and environment in Semarang City. Over the last20 years many urban areas have experienced dramatic growth, as a result of rapidpopulation growth and as the world's economy have been transformed by acombination of rapid technological and political change. Centralistic type ofdevelopment from New Era Government gives consequences in the formation ofmega urbanization. As a geographic phenomenon, urbanization is seen as acontinuumfrom community level until global level. In the cases of Semarang, thereis much more than a doubling. Net migration in many cases contributes as muchas two thirds of the population growth in these zones, whereas in the city cores, netmigration contributes little to growth. The main factor which is influencingurbanization process in Semarang is the growth of service sector, especiallyinformal activities. A comprehensive model suggests that urbanization in Semarangis influenced by structural and social demographic factors. So, the balancebetween managing urban discharges to environment and enhancing environmentalresource capacity is key determinant of the sustainability of the development inSemarang and livabilitY in genera
ENVIRONMENTAL CARRYING CAPACITY BASED ON SPATIAL PLANNING
The aims of this research were to examine environmental carrying capacity analyzed basedon aspects of spatial planning and eco-region. The result showed that Kulonprogo Regencyhas low value of environmental carrying capacity and can only support as much as 79.81%of its total population. Analysis of variance showed significant difference of environmentalcarrying capacity of protected and cultivated area. The main factor among 12 variablesdetermining the degree of environmental carrying capacity is man-land ratio (contributed39.72%). Priority should be given to 28 villages or 31.81% of the area with lowenvironmental carrying capacity. Eco-region and spatial plan approaches in environmentalmanagement practice are also strongly recommended
SPATIOTEMPORAL CHARACTERISTICS OF EXTREME RAINFALL EVENTS OVER JAVA ISLAND, INDONESIA
The patterns and trends of extreme daily rainfall within period of 1981 – 2010 have beenanalyzed for Java Island, Indonesia particularly East Java Province. A set of extreme indicesrecommended by WMO were calculated using high quality data from 84 rain stations toexpress the frequency and intensity of those events. The spatial patterns was identified bymapping climatological mean of indices while temporal trends was assessed using the nonparametricMann-Kendal test. The study found that the spatial pattern of extreme rainfallevents over East Java Province is generally characterized by low frequency and intensity inthe coastal area, and high frequency and intensity in the mountainous area. The dominantfinding from trend assessment is not-significant trend. However, the consistently significanttrend was observed in some districts. Rain stations in District of Ponorogo, Ngawi,Bojonegoro, Gresik and Sumenep showed significant negative trend for almost all indiceswhereas significant positive trend was found in District of Surabaya and Pasuruan
A MODEL OF COLLABORATIVE FOREST RESOURCES MANAGEMENT TO IMPROVE THE PROSPERITY OF POOR FAMILY FARMERS IN EAST JAVA
The model of collaborative forest resources management between the local government andpoor Pesanggem families becomes one of important alternative strategies to develop forestssustainably and equitably. The focus of this research is the collaborative forest resourcesmanagement between the local government and Pesanggem farmers. The aim of the researchis to analyze how far the local government and Pesanggem farmer involve in thecollaborative forest resources management. The research is conducted in Pasuruan andMalang. The number of respondent involved in the research is 60 respondents. The researchfinding shows that the participation level of the local government and Pesanggem farmers inthe collaborative forest resources management is quite high. The activities of the respondentsin the collaborative forest resources management are deciding the planting location,planning, evaluating, monitoring, and preparing the seedbed. The income level of Pesanggemfarmers that actively involve in managing the forest resources is also quite high. The averageof their income is Rp 500.000,- up to Rp 650.000,- per month. This means that they give highcontribution to the family income
