Theoretical Development of Urbanization Study in the Third World and It's Relevance on Rural Urbanization Research
At least.. there are /11.'0 points of concern in the urbanization studies, i.e. to see urbanization as a process of structural change of rural population (and areas) and to give attention to the interrelationships (in terms of economic, demographic,political. cultural, technological, social changes) between two different types ofgeographical areas, i.e. urban and rural. These two points of concern lay afoundation for a further development of recent~v urbanization studies, called rural urbanization. So far. it is indicated there are three main streams of perspectives in urbanization studies, i.e. modernization, dependence, and inter-dependence urbanization. Each of these perspectives gives a special color on rural urbanization process. At least there are three fimdamental questions that can be raised from theoretical discussion of urbanization, i.e. (1) are distinct regions that recentlyemerge different from what conventionally known as rural and urban areas; and ifthese are special regions. (2) what are the underlying factors and forces that encourage the emergence of these distinct regions? (3). what kind of policies needed to effectively to cope the development of these distinct regions? These three questions actually are underlying three main areas of rural urbanization researchin a certain region, i.e.: (1) answering WHAT. WHERE, and HOW of the process of rural urbanization; (2) finding the main factors affecting the process; and (3) what kind of actions can be carried out dealing with rural urbanization 'problem
Marketing patterns of agricultural commodities in an upland area of Central Java
In the uplands of Central Java a wide variety of dry cultivated crops are produced for subsistence as well as for cash. The marketing channels for these crops are also diverse. The producers can choose between selling at the market place or at their farms; either to consumers or traders; or they can sell their products to wholesalers in the towns. However, this freedom of choice is not absolute and is determined by the quantity of the merchandise. Farmers/who can sell large amounts of produce are able to bypass some steps in the hierarchical order of market places or traders. Thus, producers with relatively large farmlands can sell their commodities in more profitable ways compared to those with /smaller farms. Hydrological Implication of Bamboo And Mixed Garden In The upper Citarum Watershed
The assessment of important factors affecting runoff and erosion was carried out by collecting runoff and soil loss from four runoff/erosion plots. The runoff/erosion plots were set up in sloping areas of about 40% slope in the upper area of Ciwidey sub-watershed (upper Citarum watershed), West Java. The plots (6 x 10 m) were established in the following four sets of conditions: bamboo plantation, mixed garden, small shrub, and agricultural field with different species and stand structures. After 20 rainfall events, a treatment in the form of removing undergrowth and litter were applied to bamboo and mixed garden plots. The result of this before and after treatment are the following: runoff from bamboo plantation was increased from 0.40 to 1.02 litre/m2 and erosion was increased from 1.47 to 11.65 gr/m2. While the runoff and erosion in mixed garden were increased from 0.36 to 1.65 litre/m2 and from 1.36 to 10.88 65 gr/m2, respectively. When this compared to the runoff and soil loss in the agricultural plot, the soil erosion is much higher, 50.5 gr/m2 (about 50 times higher). Stand/canopy structure appeared to be the important factors that determine the magnitude of soil erosion. ANALYZING RUNOFF DYNAMICS THROUGH PARAMETERIZING A HYDROLOGICAL MODEL IN A WATERSHED: A CASE STUDY IN UPPER SERAYU BASIN, CENTRAL JAVA PROVINCE, INDONESIA
This research constructed a hydrological model by means of available data,hydrological equations, and GIS program to find out the runoff dynamic on thestudy area. The runoff dynamic was analyzed by describing runoff on different landcover types, figuring the correlation between hydrological component and runoff,calculating the sensitivities of the hydrological components to runoff, andidentifying the response of runoff to possible land cover change. The modelresulted that the highest runoff occurred on built up area and the lowest occurredon cultivation area. Infiltration was also the hydrological component that mostlyinfluenced runoff. Replacing forest, shrub, and plantation by cultivation greatlyreduced runoff up to 49 %. Enlarging forest area increased runoff about 12 %.Based on those findings, the hydrological component having the strongestcorrelation with runoff gave the most influence to runoff change, and enlargingforest area does not always decrease runoff
COMMUNITY- BASED APPROACH TO REDUCE EARTHQUAKE VULNERABILITY IN KATHMANDU VALLEY
Nepal is a vulnerable country in terms of multiple disasters and one of them is earthquakes.Disaster risk management experts believe that one of the ways to reduce thevulnerabilities is by adopting a community-based disaster risk management approach.Unfortunately, Nepal has limited resources; the culture of insurance against disastersdoes not currently exist. This paper describes the findings of research conducted intraditional settlements of Kathmandu Valley multiple case studies, household surveys,and community-based participatory research have identified that the culture ofparticipation in local development activities and fundraising at the local level couldcontribute to disaster risk management in traditional settlements of Kathmandu Valley. Thispaper thus suggests developing resilience governance at the community level throughconsumer cooperatives in order to reduce vulnerability to earthquakes and capitalize onalready existing financial, human, and social capital and resources
THE ROLE OF URBAN AREA AS THE DETERMINANT FACTOR OF POPULATION GROWTH
This research aims to (1) find the determinants for the increase of population growth rate and(2) understand the role of urban area as the pulling factor for the migrant. This research heldin Yogyakarta Special Region since the population growth has increasing during 2000-2010.Secondary data from the Bureau of Statistic (BPS) were used for the main analysis. Dataprocessing and analysis were performed by using descriptive-quantitative method.The resultof this research indicates that population growth rate in Yogyakarta Special Region isaffected by the increase of immigration from the other provinces. This migration is referred tothe recent migration, in which people entering this province as motivated by educational,family, sense of security, tourism, and job seeking background. This research also revealsthat Yogyakarta City and Sleman Regency becomes the center for pulling the migrant. This isespecially due to its function as the base for economy, educational city, area with stablesecurity, and low cost of living
THE SPATIAL INTERACTION OF BANDUNG CITIZENS
Bandung is one of the cities in Indonesia which has rapid population growth. Bandung also has high citizenmobility that comes from both other areas around the city and inside the city itself. This mobility is causeddaily activities of the citizen, eitherby studying or working. The objectives of this research are to analyze: 1) thecitizen mobility in Bandung, 2) the spatial distribution of land uses in Bandung, and 3) the spatial interaction ofBandung citizens, on the basis of land use and citizen mobility in Bandung. This research uses descriptiveanalytical method. The data is collected by using interview based technique. The collected data consist ofmobility location, type of occupation, modes of transportation, destination location, and land use type. The dataare analyzed using percentage and origin-destination matrix. The result of this research indicates that thepurpose of the citizen mobility in Bandung is mostly conducted to work by using his/her own vehicle. Most ofthe mobility is occurred around each developmental area. Furthermore, it is also revealed that there is amassive movement to Cibeunying region,n which is used for educational purposes, offices, and trading areas
Routing model of sediment yield for a representative Himalayan drainage Basin, India
For a large watersheds sediment yield can be more accurately estimated if the large watersheds is divided into sub-watersheds to compensate for non-uniformly distributed sediment sources.
