    LAND USE AND TRANSPORT PLANNING IN THE GREATER KAMPALA, UGANDA

    Urban land use (also known as spatial planning or urban form) has a big influence andimpact on the way transport systems are planned and managed in large cities. In Kampalafor example, transport systems are largely inefficient because of the failure by the cityauthorities to adopt an integrated approach towards land use and transport planning. Due toa multifarious and complex land tenure system, the provision of roads and other transportrelatedinfrastructure such as parking facilities and bus terminals has become virtuallyimpossible. This paper examines the impact of land use on transport planning in Kampala inview of the city’s recent experience. It also draws lessons from the experiences of the rolemodel cities in Asia. To address key transportation challenges such as rapid motorizationand traffic jam, it is critical that land use-based strategies such as transit malls, land valuecapture, constructing high density buildings (both commercial and residential) along thetransit lines as well as establishing park and ride facilities are adopted by the urbanmanagers and city policy makers

    HAZARD ASSESSMENT TO TIDAL FLOOD INUNDATION (Case Study: Tegal Municipality)

    Tegal Municipality is one of coastal cities suffering from tidal flood inundation. This paperaims to assess current and future hazards to understand the extent of the inundation. Fieldobservation, questionnaires, in-depth interviews, as well as secondary data collection havebeen great tools in achieving the research objectives. It is found that households in researchlocation are dominated by low hazard indexes. The results are influenced both by currentautonomous and planned adaptation strategies conducted by affected households andgovernments. It is also found that due to its relatively low-lying area, Muarareja is the firstvillage affected by inundation depth increase. A 10 cm inundation depth scenario results inthe inundation of more than 85% of Muarareja’s total area. Meanwhile in Tegalsari,Mintaragen, and Panggung, a 10 cm inundation depth scenario results in inundation of lessthan 21% of total areas

    THE INFLUENCE OF PUBLIC PARTICIPATION ON SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION AND REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT IN MEDAN

    Sustainable transportation becomes very important in a certain town since it can influence thedevelopment of the town itself. One of the sustainable transportations is angkot (urban publictransportation). Urban public transportation is one of the means of land transportation whichis mostly used in big towns in Indonesia, including Medan. The aim of the study was toanalyze the influence of public participation on sustainable transportation and regionaldevelopment in Medan. There were 400 respondents who used urban public transportation inMedan. They were divided proportionally into 21 sub-districts in Medan. The data wereanalyzed by using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with an AMOS version 18 program.The hypothetical test was obtained by seeing the probability value or by seeing thesignificance of the correlation of each variable such as public participation, sustainabletransportation, and regional development. The result of the study showed that there was theinfluence of public participation on sustainable transportation and regional development inMedan. Public participation could also directly influence regional development in Medan

    LAND MANAGEMENT, THE MYTH OF DEWI SRI, AND THE BALANCE OF JAVANESE COSMOLOGY, AN ANTHROPOGEOGRAPHIC OVERVIEW

    The research was conducted in the Prangkokan Village, Purwosari, Girimulyo, Kulon Progo,, Yogyakarta. Thepurpose of this study is to reveal the land management practice in the study area based on the mythl of Dewi Sri who is believed to maintain the balance of cosmos. Significance assessment performed based onanthropogeographic approach. This research was conducted based on qualitative ethnographic methods. Theresults showed that agricultural land management still influenced by the myth of Dewi Sri. This “Dewi Srimyth” is trusted by the farmers because they believe that the gods were able to maintain soil fertility. Dewi Sri myth is also believed to be able to maintain the balance of the cosmos. In anthropogeographic terms, thefarmers live in Prangkokan village are managing arable land and yard with a spiritual mindset. The traditional management of soils apparently is believed can bring fertility and prosperity to the community life

    THE EFFECT OF LAND USE AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION ON FLOOD CONTROL AT NORTH ACEH DISTRICT

    This study is intended to answer the effect of land use, community participation and their relationship toflooding. The result states that land use has a direct effect to flooding with value of about -0.323, all of the land use does not have an indirect effect, therefore the total score is -0.323. Community participation for flood control has a direct effect of about 1.640. The participation does not have an indirect effect, therefore the total effect is 1.640. Community participation has a direct effect to flooding with score of -0.416. The indirect effect is 2.322, while the total effect is 1.906. Land use for flood control has no direct effect and indirect effect. Land use has a direct effect to flood with score of a bout -0.323. It does not have an indirect effect, while the total effect is -0.323. Flood control effect on flooding has a direct effect of 1.416. It does not have indirect effect, thus the total effect is 1.416. The study reveals that the land use and community participation related to flood variables have significant effect. Moreover, flood control effort also has significant effect to reduce flooding

    UTILIZATION OF GEOTAGGED PHOTOGRAPH, REMOTE SENSING, AND GIS FOR POST-DISASTER DAMAGE ASSESSMENT

    Merapi eruption in 2010 causing major damage impact on that region. Post-disaster damage assessment thathas been done by the government have not been supported with a good spatial data so that validation isrelatively weak. Method of post-disaster damage assessment, particularly assessment of building damage usinggeotagged photos, remote sensing and GIS is expected to improve the method of damage assessment by thegovernment of Indonesia. Geojot Applications for Android Smartphone/Tablet allows the assessment of buildingdamage to be included in the photo attribute. Interpretation of satellite imagery of building damage is done byusing three indications: building visibility, building collapse, and building roof. Geotagged photograph cancomplement the needs of building damage assessment from satellite images because it can describe thestructural and non-structural damage to buildings clearly. Geotagged photograph with GPS Lock-Off moderequiring information on the direction and distance of the object being photographed. Geotagged photographwith the QR code is the most profitable because the identity of the building is already known and can bematched with an existing database

    The use of remote sensing techniques is indispensable for Indonesia due to the large size of its territory, most of which is of difficult access and of little known regional potential. Some areas are covered by clouds almost all the year round so that remote sensing systems using visibilities up to the thermal portion of the electromagnetic spectrum fail to record them. There is no other way but to apply the microwave energy for such areas, the passive as well as the active one.This paper deals with the data extraction from Sir-B image of Rimbobujang area and its surroundings, in Sumatra, Indonesia, with special reference to the identification of settlements. It is a result of image interpretation followed by a three-days fieldchech in the study area. Comparison is also made with SPOT and La.ndsat MSS images.SIR-B image proves to be a reasonably good tool to identify rural settlement in an open area, especially for that with high density of houses. Its use to identify towns and cities is more recommended

    The contribution of river murray tributaries to the flooding of barman forest

    The Barmah River Red Gum forest are part of a larger tract of such forests along the River Murray. It is known that river flooding provides an important source of water for the sustenance of these forests. The contribution of River Murray tributaries to the flooding of these forest was examined. The main stem of the River Murray above lake Hume was the single most important source. Removal of this would lead to a 55 percent decrease in forest flooding. Removal of either the Ovens or the Mitta Mitta would lead to a 30 percent reduction in flooding, while removal of the Kiewa river would lead to a 15 percent reduction in flooding. No particular tributary can be regarded as a source of extreme forest floods since all tributaries more or less act in concert. A backwater influence of high water levels at the down strewn confluence of the Goulburn and Murray Rivers leads to high water levels in the River at Barmah. However, because of the short-lived nature of such high, water levels it is unlikely that such floods penetrate very far into the forest unless they are also associated with flows in the River Murray

    Searching new strategies for managing and controlling urban land growth: a preliminary outlook on Indonesia

    This article is a result of an intensive study of literatures concerning urban growth management. It tries to examine the specific character of existing techniques for managing and controlling urban land growth and tries to match them to the Indonesian situation. The techniques can be categorized into two major types, i.e. urban and urral (urban-rural) orientation. Indonesian .urban sprawl can be distinguished into two models, i.e. the Java and Outer Islands model. Java model is characterized by leap-frog (see for example Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Surabaya) and ribbon development (see for example Padang in Sumatra, Banjarmasin in Kalimantan, Kendari in Sulawesi). The physical, social, historical background are responsible for this conditions. The urban-rural oriented strategy is highly recommended for managing and controlling urban land growth on the island of Java whereas urban oriented techniques are suggested for managing and controlling urban land development on the outer islands
