    PHYSICAL WATER QUALITY RESPONSE TO RAINFALL OF BETON KARST SPRING AT GUNUNGKIDUL REGENCY - YOGYAKARTA INDONESIA

    Beton karst spring is located in the Ponjong sub District Gunungkidul Regency, at thewestern part of Bribin undergorund river catchment area. The purpose of this study are: 1) toknow the variations of rainfall and discharge in the research area, 2) to know thecharacteristics of the physical water quality of Beton spring and 3) to determine therelationship between the variations of the rainfall toward the discharge and the physicalwater quality of Beton spring. This study uses survey methods and the techniques of datacollection using sample by purposive sampling. The variables are rainfall (the depth andintensity), spring discharge and physical water quality of spring (EC, T, TDS, turbidity). Thedata analysis is conducted graphically and descriptively to explain the relationship betweenthe variations of rainfall to the discharge and physical water quality of spring. The resultsshow the rainfall has variations include the pattern, events and the amount of rainfall. Betonspring has high discharge variations. The physical water quality of the spring meets to thewater quality standards according to the Government Regulation number 82 years 2001. Thestrong correlation between rainfall variations to the discharge and the physical water qualityof Beton spring can be seen clearly. It is reflected from the high value of R2

    TRADITIONAL FARMING PRACTICES AND WASTEWATER IRRIGATION FARMING IN PERIURBAN, ZAMBIA

    Studies on urban and peri urban agriculture in Zambia have not adequately tackled issuespertaining to farming practices in wastewater irrigation farming. The investigated thefarming practices in relation to heavy metal contaminated wastewater irrigated farming attwo peri urban areas in Zambia. The method comprised observation of crop cultivationactivities at field plots located at intervals along transects established in the stratified landzones at the two study sites namely New Farm in Mufulira and Chilumba Gardens in Kafue.The results revealed that farming practices were characterised by traditional landmanagement farming practices and traditional multiple cropping systems which wereinfluenced by a combination of agro ecological factors as well as availability of heavy metalcontaminated wastewater which has the potential to contaminate soils and crops. Thefarming practices were based on adaptation of traditional production systems to peri-urbanwastewater irrigation farming which confirmed the results from other developing countries

    MANAGING FLOOD RISKS: LESSONS FROM KEKO MACHUNGWA INFORMAL SETTLEMENT IN DAR ES SALAAM, TANZANIA

    Globally, world urban population has been increasing and by 2050 it is expected to reach70% of the world population. This is a challenge because new settlements are emerging andmost of them are taking place informally in developing countries. Forms of urbanization indeveloping countries are not in favor of poor people. As a result, majorities are forced toreside informally in areas prone to natural hazards in general and floods in particular.Literatures prove that informal settlements are a major factor in the increase of floodsbecause most of them lack of basic infrastructures and there is poor coordination from thedevelopment activities. These together contribute to the increase of vulnerability of informalsettlement inhabitants into different risks associated with floods as a result of climaticchange. The paper therefore assesses surroundings of informal settlements under theumbrella of factors that cause risks and how they are managed and spell out relevant policyimplications. Findings show that factors that increase flood associated risks in the settlementinclude: housing densification, solid waste management, sewers and drains management,blocked streams, water sources, livestock keeping, and accessibility

    The Sultanate of Yogyakarta which, during the struggle for independence and subsequently has been known as the Special Region of Yogyakarta, is located in the southern part of Central Java. It constitutes much of the heartland of Javanese culture, for Yogyakarta was the center of the pre-colonial Kingdom of Mataram.Within Yogyakarta Special Region, there is a marked contrast in the population density between Bantu! and Sleman regencies on one hand, and Gunung Kidul and Kulon Progo on the other hand. The basic reason for this difference is the fact that the soil of Bantul and Sleman regencies is primarily young and vulcanic, while there is also a good water supply and intensive irrigation network.The annual rate of population growth in Yogyakarta Special Region is much lower compared with other provinces in Java. During 1961 and 1971 the rate of population growth was 1.1 percent, for the period 1971— 1980 became 1.09 percent.     The stream character as such and its discharge behavior are the gross results of a range of events and functions of nature. The word 'stream flow', as used in the present text, is referred to 'catchment yield'. This yield is obviously discharge, q, which has dimensions of volume, L3, and time, T, expressed here onwards in cumec (one cubic metre per second) which will ultimately be converted into a single voluminous unit litre (1) and hence referred to as Q. As the_ Gola River is a spring fed river,, its discharge behaviour is absolutely dependent on the sub-surface flow of Siwalik{ Ranges. It has been noticed that the sub-surface flow fluctuates according to the monsoonal and non-monsoonal precipitation intensity. Hence, an interesting seasonal rhythm is noticed in the monsoonal and non-monsoonal discharge with the changing values of stream magnitude and velocity

    Flooding has become a serious problem in Jakarta. During floods .of 2007, Kampung Melayu, East Jakarta was the worst hit.by the floods. Community have different perceptions on disaster and have different effort to overcome the hazards. Therefore, local government and relevant institution should investigate this situation and make this information a valuable input in developing and implementing response plans in flood mitigation. This research is to explore the vulnerability of floods based on local people's perception. There were 83 households interviewed using questionnaire. Certain elements at risk related with physical and socio:economic aspects were identified. Physical information concerned the building structure and building contents. Several socio-economic characteristics were used as key indicators to analyze the vulnerability of people. Generally, the result of this research shows that the ability of people to cope with the flooding i$ linked with the capacity of the people itself. The capability of people to deal withflooding was influenced by several indicators.based on their socio- . economic characteristics. For example, lower income people will experience more suffering than the wealthier, because they cannot afford the' costs of repair, reconstruction. Although the wealthier are likely to experience a higher degree of economic damage due to possessions of higher value. Base on the analysis, all coping strategies and flood measures are not enough to cope with flooding in the study area

    SUB-PIXEL IMAGE CLASSIFICATION OF HYPER-SPECTRAL DATA FOR VEGETATION AND SOIL MAPPINGIN SEMI-ARID ENVIRONMENT

    The HyMap hyper-spectral data was used to classify photosyntheticvegetation (PV), non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV), and exposed soils in a semiaridsavannah environment of McKinlay, northern Queensland, and Australia. Thisstudy aimed to understandhow effective the sub-pixel classificationapproach appliedon hyper-spectral data to distinguish the vegetation and soil features in semi-aridenvironment. In contrast to the per-pixel approach this approach treats the pixelvalue as reflectance sum of its composite features, and shows its componentabundance. The most commonly used sub-pixel classification technique was used inthis research, namely Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU). End members were used asthe input class, and the result was compared with the standard maximum likelihoodclassification (MLC) using post-classification comparison method The result of thisstudy shows that LSU produced a patchy distribution of classes throughout theimage. The brown soil tends to be over-estimated with respect to other classes. PVfeatures were relatively well-mapped compare to other classes. NPV features haveproblem with domination of exposed soil reflectance. This is equivalent to theprevious studies result that background soil dominates the spectral reflectance inthis environment. According to the qualitative accuracy assessment, LSU hashigher accuracy in representing PV and NPV compare to the traditional MLCclassification

    MODEL FOR LOCATION DEVELOPMENT OF ATM BANKING SERVICE IN URBAN AREA

    The research aims to (iesign a determination modelfor the locations of ICTbased economic service particularly the ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) service.The initial step of this research was to compile a database of the ATM service useby respondents in JjJekasiCity. The data base covered the locations of the ATMsthe respondents visited and their reasons for choosing those locations. The nextstep was to perform the network and spatial analysis by using Arc View GIS 3.x todetermine the optimal service locations. The research result shows that: 1) Thelocations of ATM placement were mostly found in areas of trade and service,industry and regular residence, 2) The orientation of ATM location developmentrequired by the people was on regular and irregular residence considering theshort distance, 3) In determining optimal ATM locations attention must be paid tothe parameter of distance between the location and trade and service areas as wellas the regular residence. The use of network analysis is indeed helpful indeveloping model of the service location in the determination of optimal servicearea

    Indonesia's cultural economy: an economic geography using two secondary data sources

    Economic geographers have become increasingly interested in the importance of the 'cultural economy' to cities and regions, but rarely have results been sought or discussed for Southeast Asia or nations in the developing world. This article responds to this lacuna by charting an economic geography of cultural production in Indonesia, examining two sources ofpublicly available data: the United Nations Statistics Division's COMTRADE database of trade statistics, and DISb2b Indonesia (a commercial database of business location details in Indonesia). Results are discussed for the period 1996- 2002, for which reliable data are available. While both sources are limited (and such limitations are discussed here), they provide enough insight for some conclusions about the character of 1ndonesia's cultural economy to emerge. In contrast to studies of cultural economy in overseas contexts, Indonesia's culture-related exports are dominated by emphasis on hardware and manufacturing output, rather than intellectual property or 'symbolic' content. In keeping with overseas examples though, the geography oflndonesiak cultural economy displays high levels of metropolitan primacy. Results suggest that theories of cultural economies must be re-shaped to include consideration of regional and international flows, in addition to locally-unique class, cultural and economic dynamics in particular cities and regions

    DISASTER AND RESILIENCE FOR THE 2007 FLOOD EVENT IN PART OF SUKOHARJO REGENCY

    Community resilience has become an important factor in a disaster mitigation plan.Resilience is related to the ability to recover from a disaster and is for every persondifferent. This research intends to assess community resilience for flood disaster. Factorsfor quantifying community resilience were asked to respondents by giving questionnaireand interviewing them, and FGD was also done in order to generate flood map based onthe community knowledge. The FGD result shows that the flood depth in the study areavaries from 0 until 300 cm, and the duration of inundation varies from 1-7 days. Floodalso caused losses, and the distribution of the losses was Rp. 0 - 100,000,000,- although, ingeneral, the losses was merely below Rp. 2,000,000,-. Based on the weighting result, theresilience value of the respondent is distributed from 0.113 until 0.700. The averageresilience value of Laban village is 0.403, and 0.368 for Kadokan village. The resiliencevalue was mostly influenced by human capital. In order to increase the communityresilience, government has established flood control devices and rehabilitated the dike alongthe river
