THE EFFECT OF WATERSHED ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND LANDUSE ON SEDIMENT YIELD IN ALO-POHU WATERSHED
The research carried out in alo-pohu watershed gorontalo province aims atidentifying the effect of watershed conditions and land use on the amount sheeterosion, sediment yield and sediment delivery ratio. It is also intended to developthem in a spatio-temporal distribution, and give recommendation for managementof environmental condition and land use in alo-pohu watershed to prevent damageerosion and sediment. Data on environmental condition and land use werecollected by interpreting landsat images and topography map. Data on surfaceerosion were obtained by means of direct measurement using 10 erosion plotsplaced in the land units. Data on sediment were obtained by collecting watersamplesfrom the upper course, middle course, and lower course of the rivers. Dataon sheet erosion and.sediment yield were analyzed in a spatio-temporal mannerusing geographic information systems (gis) and effect of watershed conditions andland utilization on sheet erosion, sediment yield, and sediment delivery ratio aretested using double regression analysis. The research results suggest significanteffect of watershed conditions and land use on sheet erosion. the largest amount oferosion very likely occurred in wasteland (bero land) with steep slopes whereas theleast amount of erosion was found in undergrowth with flat slope (0-8%). theamount of sheet erosion was 122.24 ton/ha/year. sediment yield in alo-pohu wasaffected to a large extent by runoff rate, the width of watershed, percentage ofwasteland, and drainage density
IMPACTS OF URBAN DEVELOPMENT PRESSURE ON COASTAL LOCAL COMMUNITIES IN TANZANIA
The study examined the socio-economic and cultural impacts of urban development pressureon coastal local communities in Tanzania, in line with the implementation of Human Rightsand the National Land and Human Settlement Development Policy, and suggests measures tomanage or prevent the adverse impacts and enhance beneficial impacts. Social ImpactAssessment principles were employed to study the impacts of urban development pressure onKaole, Ununio and Kilwa-Masoko. Qualitative data from 12 informants, 6 Focus Groups,and quantitative data from 150 heads of household and their spouses were collected using asemi-structured questionnaire. Data was analysed using the SPSS computer software. It wasfound out that impacts included low incomes, insecurity over land, food insecurity, pooraccess to social services, and vulnerability to poverty. Apart from Kilwa-Masoko, there wereno programmes to avoid negative impacts of urban development. It is recommended that landallocation processes should properly implement Human Rights and the National Land andHuman Settlement Development Policy
THE RELATIONS BETWEEN URBAN PARKS AND PERSONAL WELL-BEING IN BRISBANE, SOUTH-EAST QUEENSLAND, AUSTRALIA
The positive impacts of urban parks on human health have been analysed in many studies,but nearly none of them provide a suitable method to explain quantitatively the satisfactionand dissatisfaction of park uses on personal health. Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) wasemployed to examine individually well-being spirit in relation to the changes of quality ofparks and the joyfulness on access to parks. This study aims to find answers for questions‘why and where are people happy or unhappy with their health in connections to urbanparks?’ The data for Brisbane area were extracted from the quality of life survey in South-East Queensland, Australia. 70% data was used for learning model parameters; the rest wasfor model testing. The generated model had 73.17% accuracy, and it was imported to ArcGISfor constructing probabilistic maps. Due to the high density of sample points, InverseDistance Weighted (IDW) interpolation was chosen to illustrate the probable happiness andunhappiness on personal health. The result shows that quality of urban parks controlledstrongly the fulfilment of personal health. Local governors can successfully enrich the qualityof urban lives by improving the quality of parks in some specific regions
SPATIAL INEQUALITIES IN THE PROVISION OF PRIVATE HEALTH FACILITIES IN OYO STATE
This paper examines the spatial pattern of the provision of private health facilities and whatthe pattern portends for health needs in an era of global warming using the 33 LocalGovernment Areas of Oyo State as spatial units of analysis. The data used for this study werecollected from Oyo State Hospital Management Board and the National PopulationCommission. The findings of the study generally show that there are enormous spatialinequalities in the provision of private health facilities in the study area. Gini Coefficient andthe associated Lorenz Curve confirm that there is generally an unequal distribution of privatehealth facilities in the study area. The curve suggests that the most vulnerable segment of thepopulation to the health consequences of global warming are precluded from utilizing privatehealth facilities. Oyo state’s experience thus shows that there is need for policy measuresthat will ensure unrestricted access to health facilities in an era of global warming
RESIDENTIAL MOBILITY AND SOCIO-SPATIAL SORTING IN KADUNA METROPOLIS, NIGERIA
Residential mobility is a process which has significant effect on the urbanscape. The preferred directional biasof the mover households in Kaduna metropolis typifies the Schelling’s model of residential tipping whichultimately resulted in residential segregation. The level of the segregation was subjected to analysis by the useof multigroup analog, and was found to be 0.58. This index is moderately high. Also, residential mobility,amongst other factors led to the expansion of the metropolis, strengthen family ties and above all led to thesocio-spatial sorting of the residents. This study recommends continuous research in residential mobilitybecause it is very useful in the forecast of future landuse patterns which are critical to urban development

A concept of "the intermediate city" has had various definitions as an analytically valuable tool in studying urban systems, particularly those in Less Developed Countries. The Intermediate City concept is reviewed and a flexible usage recommended through application of the concept to major cities in Sumatra, Indonesia. The nine major cities identified are examined for the 1961 – 1980 years in terms of their qualities as intermediate or major cities; distinctive changes during the period; and the extent to which these Sumatran intermediate cities may be representative of major cities in the broader urban system of Indonesia, Southeast Asia, and Monsoon Asi
Population in urban development and the practical problems of urban planning policy in Africa
The paper analyses the pattern of recent growth in African towns, examines the population component in this growth process and discusses the attendant urban planning problems. The contention in the study is that there are problems of definition. policy enunciation, and organisational co-ordination in the conceptualization. planning. orchestration and implementation of urban development and service systems. The magnitude of African urban developmental problems, and its multi-faceted nature demands that the latest in scientific knowledge and technological innovations should be integrated and incorporated into the urban planning and implementation processes
Geography with the environmental satellites
Coarse spatial resolution, high temporal frequency data from the earth polar orbiting (NOAA. HACMM, Nimbus, etc.) satellites and from the geostationary (GOES. Meteosat, and GMS) satellites are presented to demonstrate their utility for monitoring terrestrial and atmospheric processes. The main characteristics of these ,satellites and of the instruments on board are reviewed. In order to be useful for environmental assessments. the remotely sensed data must be processed (atmospheric and geometric corrections, etc.). The NOAA Center provides a wide range of already processed data. such as meteorological. oceanic, hydrologic and vegetation products; o rough description of these preprocessed data is given in this article. Finally, some examples of applicotions in Southeast Asia and especially in Indonesia, are described, i.e.: agroecosystem, drought and oceanic monitoring. The paper concludes that coarse resolution, high temporal frequency ,satellite data are very valuable for environmental studies. the emphasis being laid on the improve. ment of the crop and drought assessment programmes
Geomorphological analysis for assessment of coastal recreation sites in the coastal area of Trisik, Kulon Progo Regency, Yogyakarta Province
The sand dunes and beach ridges area along the south coast of Yogyakarta Special Region are partly potential for a recreation site. The development of the Trisik Coast in Kulon Progo as a recreational area, is feasible for its natural landscape condition and its location, close to the outlet of Progo River. For this purpose, a basic survey shoal be carried out, in which case, a geomorphological survey may be a part of the survey that contributes to the study of landforms and their processes. Relevant geomorphological aspects, such as morphodynamics of the tidal zone, wind-erosion and flood hazard in the assessment of physical potential of the Trisik coast for recreation have been analysed. Aerial-and ortho-photo interpretation proved to be a useful tool in delineating landforms
