Heavy Metals Distribution in the Artisanal Gold Mining Area in Wonogiri
Artisanal and small gold mining activity in Wonogiri Regency has long been done with problems on environmental quality. This study was aimed to analyze the levels and spatial distribution of heavy metals in the mining area. Survey of mining and amalgamation sites, sampling the soil and tailings had been conducted. There were 66 samples of soil and tailing were collected, analysis of heavy Fe, Mn, Pb, Hg, As and Co, using X-ray fluorescence (XRF). Normal distribution test of data was conducted using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov and Shapiro Wilk. The spatial distribution of heavy metals was described using Krigging method. Contents of most heavy metals in the area studied were high, except for Co. According to the distribution pattern of heavy metals indicated that the contamination caused by the mining
Building Ecoliteracy Through Adiwiyata Program (Study at Adiwiyata School in Banda Aceh)
This study is back grounded by importance of ecoliteracy for each individual. One of comprehensive efforts to build ecoliteracy in community is through Adiwiyata Program. This study is aimed to find out how the effectiveness of Adiwiyata Program in the effort to build students’ ecoliteracy in Banda Aceh. The method which is used is survey. The study is conducted in ten schools, with respondents are principal, teachers, administrative staff and students. Data analysis is done descriptively toward five variable and hypothesis test use nonparametric statistic test. The result of study showed that there is significant influence of school policy, curriculum implementation, school culture and school infrastructure management toward students’ ecoliteracy. The findings of study is the more effective four components of Adiwiyata is implemented, the higher of students’ecoliteracy. Therefore, four components of Adiwiyata should be implemented maximally, among other by strengthening Adiwiyata school team
Discovering Trends of Agricultural Drought in Tihama Plain, Yemen : A Preliminary Assessment
Agricultural drought is characterized by lack of sufficient moisture in the surface soil layers to support crop and forage growth. Indicators of agricultural drought often are precipitation, temperature and soil moisture to measure soil moisture and crop yield. This study aims to assess spatiotemporal of drought in the Tihama Plain, which is one of the most important agricultural areas in Yemen, where contributes about 42% of the total agricultural production in the country. In recent years, the Tihama Plain faced changes in the rainy season, which reflect negatively on agriculture production and water security in the area. In this study the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) was used to temporal evaluation of the situation of drought, also it has been used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in order to show the spatial variability distribution of drought in the study area. The analysis results by SPI-6 showed that the years 1984,1991,2002, 2003,2004,2005,2006 and 2008 were the most affected by drought during the study period 30 years (1980-2010), also show that the year 1991 was the worst years of drought experienced by the study area. Based on the fact that the study area is the most important agricultural areas in Yemen, it is recommended a study the drought and its impact on agricultural crops in the area
Land Capability for Cattle-Farming in the Merapi Volcanic Slope of Sleman Regency Yogyakarta
This research carried out to study the cattle farming development based on the land capability in rural areas of the Merapi Volcanic slope of Sleman Regency Yogyakarta after eruption 2010. Samples taken were Glagaharjo village (Cangkringan Sub-District) as impacted area and Wonokerto village (Turi Sub-District) as unimpacted area. Survey method used were to land evaluation analysis supported by Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Materials used were Indonesian topographical basemap (RBI) in 1:25000 scale, IKONOS image [2015], land use map, landform map, and slope map as supple- ments. Potential analysis of land capability for cattle forage using the production unit in kg of TDN per AU. The result showed that based on the land capability class map, both villages had potential of carrying capacity for forage feed that could still be increased as much as 1,661.32 AU in Glagaharjo and 1,948.13 AU in Wo n o k e r t
Water Quality Characteristics of Jonge Telaga (Doline Pond) as Water Resources for the People of Semanu District Gunungkidul Regency
Abstract Doline ponds (telaga) have an important role as one of water resources in karst areas, especially during dry seasons in Gunungkidul. Recently, the doline ponds are facing various environmental problems, i.e. steadily decreasing water storage, water loss, and degrading water quality. The research aims to determine the characteristics of Jonge Telaga which include the continuity of flow, utilization, pollution sources, physical water quality (temperature, EC,TDS, TSS, and turbidity), chemical water quality (pH , NO2, NO3, NH4, PO4, BOD , COD, and detergent), and biological water quality (total coliform). In order to determine the characteristics of Jonge Telaga, the research was conducted using a survey method, i.e., observing the continuity of flow and measuring physical, chemical, and biological water quality. Initially, the water was sampled purposively based on the area and the depth of this doline pond. The qualitative description of the results shows that Jonge Telaga is a closed perennial doline pond, whose main pollution source comes from domestic activities, such as bathing and washing. According to the Governor Regulation of the Special Region of Yogyakarta Number 20 Year 2008 on Water Quality Standards, Jonge Telaga meets all of the water quality criteria, except the temperature and detergent, for a Class II water.Abstrak Telaga mempunyai peran penting sebagai salah satu sumberdaya air di daerah karst, khususnya pada musim kemarau di Kabupaten Gunungkidul. Pada saat ini telaga menghadapi berbagai permasalahan lingkungan yaitu simpanan air yang terus berkurang, air yang cepat hilang, dan penurunan kualitas air. Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui karakteristik telaga yang meliputi kontiyuitas aliran, pemanfaatan, sumber pencemar, kualitas fisik air telaga (TDS, TSS, suhu, kekeruhan, DHL), kimia air (pH, NH4, PO4, NO2, NO3, BOD, COD, deterjen) dan biologi air (coliform total). Penelitian ini dilaksanakan berdasarkan metode survei. Untuk mengetahui karakteristik telaga dilakukan pengamatan kontinyuitas aliran, pengukuran kualitas air secara fisik, kimia dan biologi. Pengambilan sampel air dilakukan secara purposive mendasarkan pada luasan dan kedalaman telaga. Analisis hasil dilakukan secara deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Telaga Jonge merupakan telaga yang tertutup dengan ketersediaan air menerus sepanjang tahun. Sumber pencemar utama telaga adalah kegiatan domestik (mandi dan cuci). Kualitas air Telaga Jonge menurut baku mutu air kelas II PERGUB DIY Nomor 20 Tahun 2008 masih di bawah ambang batas kecuali suhu dan deterjen
Quantitative Assessment of Remotely Sensed Data for Landcover Change and Environmental Management
Abstract This paper examines the relevance and application of quantitative techniques in geographic study with emphasis on landcover change and environmental management in a typical urban city of Warri and its environs in Nigeria. It uses an experimental study that adopts Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Accuracy Assessment in reducing data dimensions and enhancing image visualization for onward classification into landcover classes using 1987 TM, 2002 ETM+ and ETM+ 2011. The 2011 ETM+ was later excluded due to scan line and cloud cover errors. The PCA results show that 1987 Bands of 145 has variance of 834.71 (88.09% of total components) while the 2002 Bands of 147 has variance of 1287.21 (85.344% of total components). Supervised classification results show overall accuracy of 96.19% (for 1987) and 96.30% (for 2002) respectively. The study reveals that there was increase in urban landcover (17.2% to 34.93%) and swamp (10.11% to 11.61%). Correspondingly, light vegetation and thick vegetation decreased from 41.76% to 27.38% and 26.31% to 22.36% while water also reduced from 4.63% to 3.73%. The study indicates a higher demand for urban settlement which requires landuse control to avoid urban blight and environmental decay. Abstrak Makalah ini membahas relevansi dan penerapan teknik kuantitatif dalam penelitian geografis dengan penekanan pada perubahan tutupan lahan dan pengelolaan lingkungan di kota urban khas Warri dan sekitarnya di Nigeria. Menggunakan studi eksperimental yang mengadopsi Principal Component Analysis (PCA) dan Penilaian Akurasi dalam mengurangi dimensi data dan meningkatkan visualisasi gambar untuk seterusnya klasifikasi ke dalam kelas tutupan lahan menggunakan 1987 TM 2002 ETM + dan ETM + 2011. 2011 ETM + kemudian dikeluarkan karena garis scan dan kesalahan awan. Hasil PCA menunjukkan bahwa 1.987 Bands dari 145 memiliki varians dari 834,71 (88,09% dari total komponen) sedangkan 2002 Bands dari 147 memiliki varians dari 1.287,21 (85,344% dari total komponen). Hasil klasifikasi diawasi menunjukkan akurasi keseluruhan masing-masing 96,19% (untuk 1987) dan 96,30% (tahun 2002). Penelitian ini mengungkapkan bahwa ada peningkatan tutupan lahan perkotaan (17,2% menjadi 34,93%) dan rawa (10.11% menjadi 11,61%). Sejalan dengan itu, vegetasi ringan dan vegetasi tebal menurun dari 41,76% menjadi 27,38% dan 26,31% untuk 22,36% sementara air juga berkurang dari 4,63% menjadi 3,73%. Studi ini menunjukkan permintaan yang lebih tinggi untuk pemukiman perkotaan yang membutuhkan kontrol penggunaan lahan untuk menghindari hawar perkotaan dan pembusukan lingkungan
The Political Geography of Voters and Political Participation: Evidence from Local Election in Suburban Indonesia
The praxis of political issue including voter turnout and political participation does not exist in a vacuum. Therefore, geographical and spatial issues are frequently engaged and even embedded into it. Thus, this article is written with one purpose: to investigate the spatial relationship of voter turnout and their political participation. As stated earlier, the complexity of the political analysis based on geography will take us on a multidimensional approach that includes social, cultural and economy. However, this article starts the discussion from spatial analysis by using a map that illustrates the administrative boundaries of a region, then determining whether one region is adjacent to another. In this case, Moran’s I is used to determine the spatial autocorrelation of voter turnout and political participation. The result indicates that the voter turnout and political participation in one region are adjacent to each other. Possible reasons for the result are discussed in this article
Developing of Total Suspended Sediment Model Using Landsat-8 Satellite Image and In-Situ Data at The Surabaya Coast, East Java, Indonesia
The decrease of coastal-water quality in the Surabaya coastal region can be recognized from the conceentration of Total Suspended Sediment(TSS ) . As a result we need a system for monitoring sediment concentration in the coastal region of Surabaya which regularly measures TSS. The principle to model and monitor TSSconcentration using remote sensing methods is by the integration of Landsat-8OLI satellites image processing using some ofTSS-models then those are analyzed for looking its suitability with TSS value direcly measured in the field ( in-situ measurement). The TSS value modeled from all algorithms validated usingcorrelation analysis and linear regression . The result shows that TSS model with the highest correlation value is TSS algorithm by Budiman (2004)with r value 0.991. Hence this algorithm can be used to investigate TSS-distribution which represent the coastal water quality of Surabaya with TSS value between 75 mg/L to 125 mg/L
Applying Remote Sensing Technology and Geographic Information System in Batu, East Java
This research is aimed to map potential landslide areas, identify types of the landslide, and draw a map of potential landslide level. This research was carried out in Batu, East Java. The research design that was used in the study was image interpretation of Landsat 7 Band 432 Satellite and primary data of the landslide causes (the data of soil and rocks, map interpretation, and variable scoring of the landslide. ArcGIS 9.3 and ArcView 3.2 software was used for map analysis. The researcher also analyzed the soil texture, permeability and land plasticity index, bedding, weathering level, the density of joints, the depth of weathering, the existence of springs, slopes, and slope cutting. The research findings showed that the image of Landsat 7 Bands 432 in 1:11.000 – 1:15.000 scale could be used to interpret land use and land cover. Interpreted land use included housing, bare soil, irrigated rice field, rain-fed rice field, moor, nursery area, garden, slope failure, natural forest, sengon forest, pine forest, and agroforestry
