Evaluation of Railway Level Crossing Attributes on Accident Causation in Lagos, Nigeria.
Abstract The study examines the contribution of Railway Level Crossing (RLC)physical attributes to accident occurrence using the12 major level crossings within the Lagos metropolis. The 48km single track mainline section under consideration which barely make up 1.1% of the entire narrow gauge track network of the country within a 5 year period contributed about 45% of the total National crossing accidents recorded in Nigeria. The method of investigation involved recording the individual attributes of each RLC such asgates, pedestrian traffic, car traffic light, proximity of signage to crossing, vehicular traffic as dummy variables.The regression analysis was used to measure their effect on accidents.The result indicates gates, pedestrians and the location of signage had significant impact on accidents occurrence at level crossings within Lagos metropolis. Based on the findings, enhancement of active warning systems among other recommendations was suggested as potent counter measures for RLC accident reduction.Abstrak Penelitian menguji tingkat kontribusi atribut fisik dari perlintasan jalan kereta api terhadap kejadian kecelakaan menggunakan 12 perlintasan utama dalam kota metropolis Lagos. 48 km jalan utama tunggal menjadi pertimbangan yang hampir meningkat 1.1% dari seluruh trek sempit jaringan negara dalam jangka waktu 5 tahun menyumbang sekitar 45% dari total kecelakaan perlintasan secara Nasional di Nigeria. Metode penelitian melibatkan catatan dari masing-masing atribut RLC seperti pintu gerbang, pejalan kaki, lampu lalu lintas mobil, kedekatan tanda penyebarangan, lalu lintas kendaraan sebagai variabel dumi. Analisis regresi digunakan untuk mengukur pengaruh dari atribut terhadap kecelakaan. Hasilnya menunjukkan pintu gerbang, pejalan kaki, dan lokasi tanda perlintasan mempunyai dampak signifikan pada kecelakaan dalam kota metropolis Lagos.Berdasarkan penemuan tersebut, perbaikan dari sistem peringatan aktif disarankan sebagai upaya mengurangi kecelakaan RLC.
Navigational Aids Systems (Navaids) and Safety Measures of Aircraft : an Analysis.
Abstract This study examines the availability of necessary NAVAIDS required for safe approach and landing; highlight the accidents and incidents occurrences relating to the final approach amongst others. A combination of both primary data and secondary data were employed in the study and findingsshows that there are varying degree of fluctuations in number of aircraft using NAVAIDS in Nigeria from 2003 to 2013 and that there is strong and positive correlation (r< +0.97) in the relationship between the total aircraft and those that uses precision NAVAIDS for final approach and landing during that period. So also, there is strong positive correlation (r< 0.95) between total accidents and incidents and Approach-Landing accident and incidents between 1968 and 2012. The study recommends adequate precision approach NAVAIDS in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) recommendation and policy formulation on replacement of ageing and obsolete NAVAIDS in Nigerian airports among others. Abstrak Penelitian ini menguji ketersediaan NAVAIDS yang diperlukan untuk pendekatan dan pendaratan yang aman, khususnya pada kecelakaan dan insiden yang berkaitan dengan pendekatan akhir diantara yang lain. Kombinasi data primer dan sekunder digunakan dalam penelitian dan menunjukkan bahwa ada berbagai tingkatan fluktuasi jumlah pesawat yang menggunakan NAVAIDS di Nigeria dari tahun 2003 sampai 2013 dan menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang kuat dan positif (r< +0,97) antara total pesawat dan ketelitian menggunakan NAVAIDS untuk pendekatan akhir dan pendaratan selama periode tersebut. Terdapat pula korelasi positif kuat (r< 0,95) antara total kecelakaan dan insiden dengan pendekatan-pendaratan kecelakan dan insiden antara 1968 dan 2012. Penelitian ini merekomendasikan ketelitian menggunakan NAVAIDS untuk pendekatan sesuai dengan Organisasi Penerbangan Sipil Internasional (ICAO) dan perumusan kebijakan penggantian NAVAIDS yang usang dan tua di bandara Nigeria lainnya.
Use of Space and the Need for Planning in the Disaster-Prone Area of Code River, Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Abstract The Code Riverbank is prone to flooding from lahars due to the regular eruption of Mount Merapi. The study focuses on the affected areas in Danurejan, Yogyakarta City, Indonesia. The purpose of this study is 1) to identify and analyze the use of space after the disaster, and 2) to analyze the action as well as spatial planning needs after the disaster. Data were collected from secondary and primary data. The primary data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions. The results show that the utilization of space in the anticipation of the lahar flood disaster is still limited to the construction of an elevated levee. Research findings suggest attention should be brought to the utilization of space related to vulnerable groups. Also, public participation, preparation of design toward ecotourism and economic value, integration of risk analysis, and spatial distribution of risk should be aggregated into a detailed spatial plan. Abstrak Tepi Sungai Code merupakan daerah rawan terhadap banjir lahar yang disebabkan oleh erupsi Gunungapi Merapi. Penelitian ini menfokuskan pada daerah terdampak di Danurejan, Kota Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah 1) untuk mengidentifikasi dan menganalisa fungsi ruang setelah bencana, dan 2) untuk menganalisa tindakan perencanaan ruang yang dibutuhkan setelah bencana. Data dikumpulkan dari data sekunder dan primer. Data primer diperoleh melalui observasi, interview mendalam, dan diskusi kelompok terfokus. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa pemanfaatan ruang dalam antisipasi dari bencana banjir lahar masih terbatas untuk pembangunan peninggian tanggul. Temuan penelitian menyarankan perlunya perhatian terhadap pemanfaatan ruang untuk kelompok yang rentan. Selain itu juga perlunya partisipasi publik dalam pemanfaatan ruang, penyiapan design ekowisata dan kegiatan bernilai ekonomi. Selan itu juga perlu adanya integrasi analisis risiko dan distribusi spasial dari risiko yang dituangkan dalam rencana rinci tata ruang.
Application of Geographically Weighted Regression for Vulnerable Area Mapping of Leptospirosis in Bantul District
Abstract Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) is regression model that developed for data modeling with continuous respond variable and considering the spatial or location aspect. Leptospirosis case happened in some regions in Indonesia, including in Bantul District, Special Region of Yogyakarta. The purpose of this study are to determine local and global variable in making vulnerable area model of Leptospirosis disease, determine the best type of weighting function and make vulnerable area map of Leptospirosis. Alos satelite imagery as primary data to get settlement and paddy fields area. The others variable are the percentage of population’s age, flood risk, and the number of health facility that obtained from secondary data. Determinant variables that affect locally are flood risk, health facility, percentage of age 25-50 years old and the percentage of settlement area. Meanwhile, independent variable that affects globally is the percentage of paddy fields area. Vulnerability map of Leptospirosis disease resulted from the best GWR model which used weighting function Fixed Bisquare. There are 3 vulnerable area of Leptospirosis disease, high vulnerability area located in the middle of Bantul District, meanwhile the medium and low vulnerability area showed clustered pattern in the side of Bantul District. Abstrak Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) adalah model regresi yang dikembangkan untuk memodelkan data dengan variabel respon yang bersifat kontinu dan mempertimbangkan aspek spasial atau lokasi. Kejadian Leptospirosis terjadi di beberapa wilayah di Indonesia termasuk di wilayah Kabupaten Bantul Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menentukan variabel lokal dan global dalam membuat model kerentanan Leptospirosis dan menentukan jenis fungsi pembobot yang terbaik serta membuat peta kerentanan wilayah Leptospirosis menggunakan aplikasi GWR. Citra Satelit Alos digunakan untuk mendapatkan data penggunaan lahan, yang selanjutnya diturunkan menjadi prosentase luas permukiman dan sawah. Parameter lainya adalah prosentase umur penduduk, resiko banjir dan jumlah fasilitas kesehatan yang diperoleh dari data sekunder. Variabel yang berpengaruh secara lokal adalah Risiko Banjir, Fasilitas Kesehatan Presentase Usia 25-50 tahun, Prosentase Luas Pemukiman, sedangkan variabel independen yang bepengaruh secara global adalah Presentase Luas Sawah. Peta kerentanan Leptospirosis yang dihasilkan dari model GWR terbaik yaitu menggunakan fungsi pembobot Fixed Bisquare. Terdapat 3 kelas kerentanan Leptospirosis yaitu kelas kerentanan tinggi berada di desa-desa di tengah Kabupaten Bantul, sedangkan kelas sedang dan rendah menunjukkan pola menggelompok di wilayah pinggiran Kabupaten Bantu
OpenLISEM Flash Flood Modelling Application in Logung Sub-Catchment, Central Java
Juwana Catchment and Logung Sub-catchment in particular has been suffering several major past flood events with significant loss. This study conducted an assessment of flood risk by using OpenLISEM as physical soil and hydrological model to generate the single storm flash flood occurrences. The physical input data were collected from remote sensing image interpretation, field observation and measurement and literature review. There are three return periods chosen as scenarios that represent rainfall intensity in Logung Sub-Catchment. Model validation was done by adjusting initial moisture content and saturated hydraulic conductivity values to equate the calculated total discharge with the measured total discharge in several chosen dates. The results show increases in most of modeled hydrological parameter with respect to increasing of rainfall intensity
Regional Resource Management Based on Landscape Ecology in Northern Muria Peninsula, Central Java
Landscape ecology can be used to identify potential resources based on it physical, biological and socio-cultural characteristics. This research was conducted in the northern part of the Muria Peninsula. This study uses observation and sampling based on toposequences transects. The northern Muria Peninsula is a complex area. Landscape in this region is strongly influenced by volcanism in the past of Muria Volcano and Genuk Volcano also geomorphological processes such as fluvial and marine. Potential resources in the northern part of the Muria Peninsula such as potential for marine, mining, agriculture, farming, and tourism. Muria Peninsula regional management should be adapted to the potential and function of each area, so that will not cause environmental degradation
Assessment of Recreational Facilities in Federal Capital City, Abuja, Nigeria
Abuja Master Plan provided development of adequate Green Areas and other Recreational Facilities within the Federal Capital City (FCC), as part of its sustainability principles and provided for these recreational facilities within each neighborhood (FCDA, 1979). However, there have been several recent foul cries about the negative development of recreational facilities and the abuse of the Master Plan in the FCC. The motivation for carrying out this study arose from the observation that recreational facilities in Phase 1 of the Federal Capital City Abuja are not clearly developed as intended by the policy makers and thus, the need to identify the recreational facilities in the Phase 1 of FCC and observe their level of development as well as usage. The field survey revealed that the Central Business District and Gazupe have higher numbers of recreational facilities with 45 and 56. While Wuse II (A08) and Wuse II (A07) Districts have lesser recreational facilities with 10 and 17. The field survey further revealed that all the districts in Phase 1 have over 35% cases of land use changes from recreational facilities to other use. The survey shows that over 65% of these recreational facilities are fully developed. The study also shows that just about 11% of the recreational sporting facilities were developed in line with the Abuja Master Plan in Phase 1. The study revealed that recreational facilities in Phase 1 of the FCC, Abuja has not being developed in compliance with the Abuja Master Plan
Model Development on Awareness of Education for Sustainable Schools Development in Malaysia
ἀis article aims to develope the Structural Equation Model (SEM) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) student awareness around Sustainable Schools in Malaysia. ἀe cluster sampling technique was used in selecting the school samples and the respondents were then also selected through simple random sampling among upper second-ary pupils. A questionnaire survey was administered for 447 pupils, to evaluate the aḀer eᴀects of the SLAAS. ἀe results showed that the model has been developed to provide an overview of each construct (knowledge on SLAAS Program, ESD content knowledge, ESD practices knowledge, attitudes of ESD and behavioral constructs of ESD) formed a ᰀt model. ἀe implication of this article showed that SLAAS Program implemented in Malaysia can be an indicator for the achievement of sustainable school
Indonesia’s Forest Resource Monitoring
Forest cover in term of distribution, extent and types, is major information required to manage the forest resources. Notably for Indonesia, which covers by approximately 98 Mha (>50%) forests, consist of 93 Mha (49.6%) natural forest and 5 Mha (2.6%) plantations forest. The forests are invaluable, including significantly preserve carbon, maintain unique biodiversity, support water and mineral cycle, as well as support local and global community. Here we report efforts have been made for years in the Ministry of Forestry for providing land cover information. Those efforts are including early development, data sources selection, method employed, techniques, and classification scheme, as well as problem encountered and approach for improvements
