Data strikes against data coloniality : hacking labour law.

    No full text
From a decolonial perspective, what is the relationship between the limits of the legality of strikes and boycotts in digital labour? Starting from Faustino and Lippold’s framework, we will consolidate the idea that data coloniality is part of the dynamics of capitalist/racist accumulation, through the expropriation and exploitation of digital labour, especially in the Global South. In this dynamic, however, new forms of workers’ resistance arise, finding gaps for reappropriating the immaterial labour that they produced. Among these collective resistances, we chose to investigate data strikes, analysing the case of the “breque dos apps” in Brazil, often related to boycott actions of digital platforms, that integrate the perspectives of hacktivism, considering McKenzie's thought. Therefore, legal analysis is required considering these new conflicts. How can labour law, from a decolonial perspective, contribute to the legality of forms of resistance compatible with the current capitalist dynamics? Considering the coloniality of knowledge that involves the right to strike, it may be more advantageous for digital workers to think about other legal instruments to protect their collective struggle, using data protection laws, in defence of workers' intellectual property. We need to hack the networks, but also find ways of hacking Law itself

This work is the product of a reflection made for an Academic Memorial of the Full Professor of the Higher Education Career. It is based on experiences and practices lived by Brazilian universities. The main purpose is to develop and explore the concept of "academic vassalage" with the intention of demonstrating that it is a political and existential relationship of subjection that represses dissent, denies otherness, prevents the development of critical spirit and political emancipation. The hypothesis is that, in the territories of academic fiefdoms, ostracism runs as a alienating, segregating and excluding way for unsubmissive individuals who rebel against the condition of vassal

O escore levou em conta a frequência diária de consumo e a extensão e propósito do processamento dos alimentos e em seguida, o mesmo foi categorizado como consumo adequado (>p75 ou p75), characterized by high consumption of fresh foods and low ultra-processed or inadequate consumption (<p75), characterized by high consumption of ultra- processed products and low consumption of fresh foods. The explanatory variable was sedentary behavior, classified as <3 hours/day and ≥3 hours according to recommendations from the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics. In relation to covariates, the following were considered: sociodemographic characteristics, child's health history, family history of diseases and anthropometric characteristics. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were performed. Results: 517 children were evaluated, 51.3% male, 60.5% aged between eight and ten years, 85.1% public school students and 46.8% declared their skin color as black. Regarding food consumption, 76.4% had inadequate food consumption (≥5 points on the score). In the multivariate analysis, adjusted for sex, type of school, level of education of the head of the family, family history of obesity, income and BMI, it was observed that children with a SB ≥3h/day were more likely to have a diet with greater representation of ultra- processed foods and less of natural/minimally processed foods, i.e., a dietary score≥5 points (OR: 2.18; 95%CI 1.31 - 3.65). Conclusion: During the pandemic, children remained sedentary for a long time and consumed mainly ultra-processed foods, which is worrying for children's health, with sedentary behavior increasing the chance of inadequate nutrition. This set of factors can lead to problems in the quality of life and well-being of children, but also in adult life with the development of chronic diseases. Therefore, taking care of children's health must be a priority, through joint efforts between families, schools and health authorities, even when faced with challenges such as those that occurred during the pandemic

This study evaluated whether polymorphisms in the ADIPOQ gene influence plasma concentrations of APN and its HMW isoform, as well as investigating their association with obesity and hypertension in children and adolescents. A case-control study was conducted with 297 children and adolescents, distributed into three groups: healthy controls (CT - n=142), obese (OBN - n=104), and obese with hypertension (OBH - n=51). DNA was extracted from peripheral blood samples, and polymorphisms in the ADIPOQ gene (rs1501299 and rs266729) were genotyped using the TaqMan assay with qPCR. APN and HMW concentrations were measured by ELISA. Variance analysis using the Kruskall-Wallis test and linear regression analysis were performed to evaluate the effects of genotypes and haplotypes on APN and HMW concentrations, adjusting for Body Mass Index, Systolic Blood Pressure, and LDL cholesterol levels. The chi-square analysis was used to estimate the association between genotypes and the development of obesity and hypertension. In multiple linear regression analysis, it was found that the presence of the alternative CG allele (rs266729) in children and adolescents is linked to decreased concentrations of HMW (P= 0.034) and the HMW/APN ratio (P= 0.046). The presence of the alternative GT allele (rs1501299) is associated with an increase in HMW concentrations (P= 0.001) and HMW/APN (P= 0.027). In haplotype analysis, the GG haplotype is associated with a reduction in APN (P= 0.035) and HMW concentrations (P= 0.007). Chi-square analysis revealed that the CG genotype of rs266729 in the additive model (OR=2.548; p=0.003) was associated with a higher risk of developing hypertension. Therefore, polymorphisms in the ADIPOQ gene affect HMW concentrations and are associated with hypertension. Understanding the genetic basis of obesity and hypertension in the pediatric population may contribute to identifying at-risk groups and, consequently, to developing prevention and treatment strategies

Towards robust ferrous scrap material classification with deep learning and conformal prediction.

    No full text
The classification of ferrous scrap materials is a well-explored problem in the literature, recognized for its significance in the steel production industry. While deep learning models are effective for this task, their deployment in industrial settings requires addressing model uncertainties and ensuring proper calibration. This study proposes adapting split conformal prediction to quantify uncertainties and facilitate model calibration. The results indicate that the Hierarchical Vision Transformer using Shifted Windows (Swin) models, particularly Swin V2, serves as the most reliable backbone for this task. Although the performance of Swin models is comparable to other evaluated models, Swin V2 demonstrates superior confidence, achieving 95.51% accuracy and the lowest conformal prediction threshold. The method is rigorously evaluated on a real-world dataset comprising 8,147 images across nine classes of ferrous scrap widely used in the Brazilian steel industry. Explainability methods corroborate the results of conformal prediction, enhancing transparency and trust in model predictions, and thereby facilitating industrial adoption. This approach bridges the gap between advanced deep learning and practical application in ferrous scrap classification, underscoring the importance of model calibration in industrial deployment
