"E a palavra amor, cadê?"
This study investigates the potential of memory tourism as a pedagogical tool to promote social awareness in the context of the traumatic memory of the community of Bento Rodrigues, which was devastated by the collapse of the Fundão dam in 2015. The research analyzes the disaster as an environmental and social crime, a result of mining neo-extractivism and colonial exploitation. Through a literature review, semi-structured interviews, and thematic analysis of the editions of the newspaper A Sirene, the documentaries CABF em Ação and Loucos pelo Bento, the collection "Bento: Passado, Presente e Futuro," and a photography workshop with 6th-grade students from the Municipal School of Bento Rodrigues, the research seeks to understand the community's experience, forms of resistance, and the importance of including their perspectives in the construction of heritage narratives. The workshop, followed by an exhibition of the photographs produced by the children, demonstrates the potential of memory tourism as a tool for social awareness, providing an educational experience for visitors. The dissertation argues that memory tourism, when conducted ethically and responsibly, can be an important tool for promoting social awareness, the construction of memories, and social justice in contexts of trauma, ensuring the active participation of communities in tourism management and the creation of a shared and inclusive memory
Graph-based method for autonomous adaptation in online learning of non-stationary data.
This work introduces a structural approach to addressing online learning problems by leveraging dataset relationships to represent the problem and estimate the likelihoods for a Bayesian classfier. The basic assumption behind such an approach is that the independent dominating set of a Gabriel graph contains the skeleton of the data and, therefore, conveys the information required to estimate drifts and density functions. The dominating set is a property of the Gabriel graph, which is deterministic and does not require hyperparameters to be set in advance. To accommodate the dynamic nature of streaming data, a method is proposed for updating the graph efficiently without recalculating all edges. The KDE estimator and its parameters are then directly derived from the dominating set, allowing the process to operate autonomously based on the spatial relationships in the data and the properties of the graph. The implementation involves constructing the Gabriel graph and its independent dominating set, from which the KDE estimator and Bayesian classfier are created to classify data streams. Results indicate that this method effectively handles various types of concept drifts, demonstrating its robustness and adaptability in online learning scenarios
Effect of usual diet on the muscle strength in well trained men.
Strength training is a widely recommended practice to provide significant health benefits. Using this protocol, it is possible to manipulate the training load through its volume and intensity components. Proper manipulation of these components can promote adaptive responses, such as muscle hypertrophy. These benefits can be enhanced or hindered depending on the composition of the usual diet. The present study evaluated the possible associations between the consumption of macronutrients from the usual diet and performance in the maximum repetition test (MR) performed at 60% and 80% of a maximum repetition (1MR). Healthy men (n=14) aged 40.81 ± 5.77 years, weight 85.37 ± 10.61 kg and height 174.5 ± 5.89 cm, took part in this study. The exercises used were the bench press, the 45º leg press and the anterior pulley. The protocol consisted of four sets of maximum repetitions (MRs) at 60% of 1MR and 80% of 1MR. Total daily dietary macronutrient consumption was 47% carbohydrates, 22% proteins and 31% fats. Conclusion: The amount of carbohydrate in the usual diet did not correlate with performance in the strength endurance task
Arsenate removal from aqueous solutions : thermodynamic and kinetic study on iron hydroxide-impregnated corn cob.
The contamination of water resources with arsenic is a serious environmental problem. This research investigated the use of a strategic agricultural waste for Brazil, i.e., corn cob as a low-cost, biodegradable, and eco-efficient material for As(V) adsorption. Arsenate removal from an aqueous solution with iron hydroxide impregnated corn cob (IHCC) was investigated under different pH values (2-10). FTIR spectra revealed that monodentate complexes were formed during the adsorption of arsenate on IHCC. Furthermore, SEM micrographs revealed a uniform distribution of Fe(III) and also As(V) on the IHCC. IHCC was efficient in the removal of arsenic from acidic solutions, mainly those having pH values between 2 and 3 at temperatures below 50°C. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second order model with an activation energy of 39.35 ± 6.99 kJ mol-1 implying that chemical reaction was the controlling step of arsenic adsorption by IHCC. In addition, arsenic adsorption on IHCC was (i) an entropically driven, (ii) spontaneous, and (iii) endothermic phenomenon (+23.82 kJ mol-1) and involved electrostatic adsorption and chemosorption (Qmax = 40 mg/g, at 25°C). Therefore, a promising sustainable and environmentally friendly solution for the use of IHCC was devised in the current work
For many years, education on ethnic-racial relations has been a central issue for Black movements, leading to the establishment of a national law in 2003. The enactment of Laws No. 10,639 of 2003 and No. 11,645 of 2008 (which amend the National Education Guidelines and Framework Law No. 9,394 of December 20, 1996) made it mandatory to include the theme of "Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous History and Culture" in the official curriculum of the education system. Both laws guide the research focus of this dissertation, which is concerned with their implementation in higher education. The research question is as follows: Do the undergraduate arts programs at federal public universities in Minas Gerais include ethnic-racial relations in their curricula? Accordingly, the objectives are: to identify, in curricular documents, the ways in which these laws are adhered to and to analyze the data gathered from the curricular content related to ethnic-racial relations. The theoretical framework includes works by Miguel G. Arroyo (2003), Nilma Lino Gomes (2019), Gersem Luciano (Baniwa) (2007), Michael W. Apple (1982), Tomaz Tadeu da Silva (1999), and Suely F. Deslandes (1994). This investigation employed a qualitative approach, developed through a documentary research divided into five stages, leading to the conclusions presented. The findings indicate that the undergraduate arts programs investigated address ethnic-racial themes in varying degrees within their curricula. However, in most cases, these themes are covered in elective or optional courses. As a result, the curricula of the studied programs reveal gaps in terms of the reach and implementation of this content for all students, leaving open questions for future research that could track changes over time and the embodiment of these curricula in the training of arts education students
Analyzing the territorial dimensions of work through a comparative study of waste recovery facilities in France and Brazil.
BACKGROUND: Waste production and management from residents and collection for sorting are systems heavily depen- dent on territorial dimensions. Ergonomic research needs to better integrate such territorial determinants to improve work conditions and design sustainable work systems. OBJECTIVE: Through studies in France and Brazil, this paper analyzes the territorial relations that raise work systems’ sustainability challenges for materials recovery facilities (MRFs) and waste management in both countries and examines the links between work activity and territory in MRFs. METHODS: Both studies were based on the principles of activity-oriented ergonomics and used analyses of work activity and sociotechnical systems. The French study focused on interventions conducted over a 42-month period in five MRFs. The Brazilian study was based on a 20-month longitudinal qualitative and quantitative study. RESULTS: In this paper, we argue that territory is a key determining factor in waste production and work. Notably, the consumption patterns of residents and the economic flows within a geographic space determine the waste composition; and the territorially specified public policies, which define technical and social dimensions of waste collection and sorting. However, the territorial dimensions of waste are poorly considered in facility design. Workers’ health and sorting system performance are thus affected and negatively compromising plant performance. CONCLUSION: The territory appears as a blind spot in the design of work systems. One of the challenges is to create interfaces and devices that could help to integrate better human activity and waste territorialized anchorage, in a multilevel organization, from local communities to the global recycling chains
Curcumin prevents renal damage of L‐NAME induced hypertension in by reducing MMP‐2 and MMP‐9.
In the present study, we investigated whether curcumin administration would interfere with the main renal features of l-NAME-induced hypertension model. For this purpose, we conducted both in vitro and in vivo experiments to evaluate renal indicators of inflammation, oxidative stress, and metalloproteinases (MMPs) expression/activity. Hypertension was induced by l-NAME (70 mg/kg/day), and Wistar rats from both control and hypertensive groups were treated with curcumin (50 or 100 mg/kg/day; gavage) or vehicle for 14 days. Blood and kidneys were collected to determine serum creatinine levels, histological alterations, oxidative stress, MMPs expression and activity, and ED1 expression. l-NAME increased blood pressure, but both doses of curcumin treatment reduced these values. l-NAME treatment increased creatinine levels, glomeruli area, Bowman's space, kidney MMP-2 activity, as well as MMP-9 and ED1 expression, and reduced the number of glomeruli. Curcumin treatment prevented the increase in creatinine levels, MMP-2 activity, and reduced MMP-2, MMP-9, ED1, and superoxide levels, as well as increased superoxide dismutase activity and partially prevented glomeruli alterations. Moreover, curcumin directly inhibited MMP-2 activity in vitro. Thus, our main findings demonstrate that curcumin reduced l-NAME-induced hypertension and renal glomerular alterations, inhibited MMP-2 and MMP-9 expression/activity, and reduced oxidative stress and inflammatory processes, which may indirectly impact hypertension-induced renal outcomes
Restoration of the Burle Marx Gardens for IPPMG/UFRJ : a methodological experience of observing uses.
This study aims to apply and discuss methodologies that contribute to the process of restoring and updating Burle Marx’s landscape project for the Institute of Childcare and Pediatrics Martagão Gesteira at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Specifically looking at use observations, this study explores behavioral mapping as a tool to design guidelines to restore this public landscape heritage, designed by the most important Brazilian landscape designer. This study argues, among other issues, that the currently existing spaces fail to incorporate the originally proposed articulation between the open spaces and the building and points to future restoration and updating procedures
Defining a panel of principal bacteria associated with endometritis.
The aim of this study is to present a panel that includes the main bacterial genera associated with endometritis. We conducted a search using the terms “endometritis women” OR “female endometritis” OR “pelvic inflammatory disease” AND bacteria* OR “uterine microbiome” in two databases: PubMed and Web of Science, without language or publication year restrictions. The panel is based on an analysis of 40 studies published over the past 38 years. We identified 31 bacterial genera, with the following five being the most frequently cited: Chlamydia and Ureaplasma with 11.03% each, Streptococcus and Mycoplasma with 9.56% each, and Enterococcus with 8.09%. Regarding its etiological aspects, we found that bacterial infection is the most prevalent cause of the disease, occurring because of invasive procedures such as curettage, cesarean section, or insertion of intrauterine devices (IUDs), among others. These events facilitate the entry of pathogenic microorganisms into the uterus, resulting in an inflammatory response and subsequent development of endometritis. The main techniques used to detect these pathogens were microbial culture, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and Next-Generation Sequencing, with microbial culture being the most employed, followed by PCR or a combination of both techniques. This diversity of techniques has significantly expanded our understanding of the presence and identification of microorganisms associated with the pathophysiology of endometritis. Therefore, it is understood that these findings serve as a foundation for further investigations of microorganisms related to endometritis, and such analyses will help to clarify the relationship between endometritis and the bacteria that cause it
The effects of the adoption of forest cropping technologies on sustainability dimensions : a multi-stakeholder perspective.
New technologies are an important instrument to face the global challenges and reach sustainability. Their adoption triggers different perspectives, interests and discourses of different stakeholders’ groups involved in this phenomenon. Therefore, analyzing the different perspectives of diverse stakeholders’ groups through their respective discourses is a fundamental instrument to assess the potential barriers and the viability of its adoption. This article analyzes how different stakeholders perceive the impacts on sustainability regarding the andadoption of new harvesting technologies in the forest industry in Brazil, through the dimensions of triple bottom line. The combination of qualitative and quantitative approach is used to analyze a set of stakeholders’ documents that reflect their perception and positions on the adoption of these technologies. As a result, the different stakeholders’ perspectives are mapped in a two-dimensional framework, based on the discursive focus (narrow versus broad), and the discourse valence (negative, neutral or positive). As contribution, this article shows the possibility to map the different stakeholders’ perspectives about a same phenomenon, which is a useful tool for perceive the possibilities of action of stakeholders through the intentions expressed in their discourse
