    No full text
This article aimed to analyze the teaching and learning process developed in Science classes through a workshop on producing narratives about the memories of adolescents from the Bento Rodrigues community. The subjects of this research are elementary school students who were residents of the area affected by the rupture of the Fundão Dam, a socio-environmental crime that occurred in November 2015, and who currently live far from their territory. To produce the students' narratives, we drew upon the concepts of social bio-narratives. In the data analysis, we sought to employ the principles of Actor-Network Theory, which emphasize the connections between various humans and non-humans, allowing us to understand learning as the outcome of sociotechnical networks, influenced by various interactions. It is evident that the workshop for narrative creation facilitated the production of unique texts marked by memories, experiences, and emotions that provide insight into the impact of the Samarco disaster on the lives of those affected

Esses compostos ajudam a proteger a pele contra radiação UV e estresse oxidativo.Miconia albicans, popularly known as "Canela de Velho," is a plant from the Melastomataceae family widely recognized in traditional medicine for its antioxidant, antidiabetic, anti- inflammatory, antimicrobial, antitumor, and analgesic properties. This study aimed to investigate the chemical composition, photoprotective activity, cell viability, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of M. albicans extracts in vitro. The extracts were obtained by maceration using different organic solvents (hexane, dichloromethane, 95% ethanol, and 70% ethanol), with the 95% ethanol extract showing the highest Sun Protection Factor (SPF). This extract was used in formulations of Permulen TR-1 Gel and Permulen TR-1 Gel 5% UVA-UVB, yielding SPFs of 17.58 ± 0.01 and 40.83 ± 0.25, respectively. Phytochemical analysis by UPLC- QTOF-MS/MS identified 34 substances, including 23 flavonoids. Antioxidant tests using DPPH and ABTS methods showed a 50% reduction in free radicals with values of 15.29 ± 0.20 μg/mL and 6.14 ± 0.60 μg/mL, respectively. This strong antioxidant capacity correlates with the total phenolic content (162.84 mg GAE/g extract) and flavonoid content (33.19 ± 0.02 mg QE/g extract). The 95% ethanol extract showed no toxicity to RAW 264.7 cells at all tested concentrations but exhibited mild toxicity to MRC-5 fibroblasts at the highest concentration (500 μg/mL). Additionally, the extract significantly reduced nitric oxide production at all concentrations compared to the negative control, indicating notable anti-inflammatory activity. The 95% ethanol extract displayed weak antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis (MIC of 1 mg/mL) but no effect against Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The fractionation of the extract produced five fractions, with fraction MA-4 showing the highest photoprotective activity. A 13C NMR analysis identified quercetin and gallic acid, while HPLC quantification revealed 4.17 mg/g of gallic acid, 16.31 mg/g of rutin, and 4.96 mg/g of quercetin. These compounds contribute to skin protection against UV radiation and oxidative stress

We study scalar cosmological perturbations in (, ) modified gravity theories, where represents the trace of the energy–momentum tensor. We provide detailed equations for the matter energy density contrast. We solve them numerically to facilitate a comparison with available large-scale structure (LSS) formation observational data on 8, while also addressing the 8 tension. We identify (, ) models that either lead to growth enhancement or suppression. Since recent results in the literature indicate a preference for the latter feature, this type of analysis is quite useful for selecting viable modifications of gravity. The studied class of such (, ) models are either ruled out or severely restricted. After selecting the surviving (, ) models we show how they deal with the 8 tension

This research was conducted with 10 family farmers, 3 (three) employees of the municipal government and 1 (one) member of the Rural Workers' Union of Amarante, in the state of Piauí. The research is justified by the need to value local mathematical knowledge and practices that are often not covered in classrooms in Basic Education. Thus, the main objective of this study is to understand how ethnomathematical knowledge related to rice production, from family farming, can be ethnomodeled through the elaboration of ethnomodels by aiming to develop the contents of areas, volumes, and estimates. The specific objectives are: a) identify the cultural artifacts and units of measurement of areas and volumes used by family farmers in Amarante-PI, from planting to harvesting and storage of rice for consumption or sale, b) analyze the strategies and problem-solving techniques involving the calculation of area, volume and estimates related to rice production, by cultivated area, through the elaboration of ethnomodels, c) establishing relations between emic (local) ethnomodels developed by family farmers with the etic (global) ethnomodels used in the school curriculum in classrooms through understanding its dialogical (glocal) approach. The theoretical foundation of this study is based on Ethnomathematics Program, Sociocultural Perspective of Mathematical Modelling, and Ethnomodelling, which seek to develop a broad view of emic (local) mathematical knowledge and practices, etic (global) mathematical knowledge by relating them dialogically through the development of cultural dynamism. It is important to emphasize that this qualitative study aimed to answer the following research question: How ethnomathematical knowledge related to rice production from family farming can be ethnomodeled through the elaboration of ethnomodels by aiming to develop the content of areas, volumes, and estimates? To obtain answers to this question, the following data collection instruments were used: a) questionnaires, b) semi-structured interviews, c) focus group, d) participant observations, and e) researcher’s field diary. The methodological procedures were used through an adaptation of the Grounded Theory, which was aided by the use of data triangulation and the consensus formula. The data were analyzed to identify preliminary codes in open coding, and the results obtained were interpreted through the identification and elaboration of conceptual categories, in the axial coding. These initial data collection and analysis procedures made it possible to obtain answers to the research question and also to validate and trust the results obtained in this research. The results show that there is a variety of local (emic) mathematical knowledge and practices present in the daily practices of agricultural family farmers and, among this knowledge, the units of measurement of length, area and volume/mass stand out, which enable participating farmers to solve daily situations, such as land cubing techniques that enable farmers to calculate the area of different land shapes such as: quadrilaterals, triangular, circular, pentagonal, and hexagonal. This interpretation of the results made it possible to create dialogical ethnomodels that can serve as a starting point for valuing and respecting knowledge and practices developed locally

Sociodemographic, economic, and academic factors linked with resilience in university students during covid-19 pandemic : a Brazilian cross-sectional study.

    No full text
Background: Resilience is a crucial factor in students’ mental health, playing an important role in their successful adaptation to the academic environment. However, there is a lack of understanding about resilience and its associated factors in students from different undergraduate courses. This study aimed to describe the resilience profile of undergraduate students from various courses in Brazil and identify sociodemographic, economic, and academic factors associated with resilience. Methods: This study has data from a cross-sectional multicenter study involving undergraduate students from eight Federal Institutions of Higher Education in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The dependent variable was resilience, measured using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) 10-item version, with sociodemographic, economic, and academic factors considered independent variables. Data was collected virtually via a self-administered questionnaire between October 2021 and February 2022 (during the covid-19 pandemic). Independent samples t-tests and ANOVAs were conducted to compare resilience scores between independent variables, and Tukey’s post-hoc test was performed when necessary. Multiple linear regression was performed to create three models. Results: 8,650 undergraduate students were included in this study. The average score on the resilience scale was 19.86 ± 8.15, with a normal distribution. The respondents ranged from 18 to 71 years old, averaging 23.9 ± 6.33. Being female, not having a religious belief, having low per capita family income, having had a decrease in the family income, not being heterosexual, or having the head of the family with a low education level were the main factors associated, individually, with low resilience scores in the sociodemographic and economic multiple linear regression model constructed. Being from linguistics, letters and arts courses, being enrolled in fewer subjects, or being from UFMG were the main factors associated, individually, with low resilience scores in the academic multiple linear regression model constructed. Conclusions: The study’s findings revealed that sociodemographic, economic, and academic variables were significantly associated with resilience scores in undergraduates from Minas Gerais during the covid-19 pandemic. These findings can help universities develop target strategies to promote students’ resilience and reduce the risk of poor mental health among this population

A bounded scheme based on Bézier curves for convection-dominated transport problems.

    No full text
This work presents a family of bounded schemes constructed based on the concept of Bézier curves that satisfies the TVD, CBC, and BAIR stability criteria for the numerical solution of convection-dominated transport problems in computational fluid dynamics problems. The convergence of the schemes to solve a series of 1D and 2D problems is analyzed. The numerical results of the proposed scheme are compared to other established methods from the literature. The numerical results show good agreement with exact solutions and numerical data from benchmarks. The findings of this work suggest the proposed family of methods as a promising alternative for solving convection-dominated problems

The ethical conduct of nutrition undergraduates at a public university in Brazil.

The practice of academic misconduct seems to be routine in undergraduate studies. Therefore, addressing ethical conduct in training is a starting point to promote debate on the construction of knowledge. This study aimed to analyze the academic misconduct of nutrition undergraduates. A cross-sectional study was performed with Nutrition students at a public university in Brazil. Participants included 105 students took part in the study: 42.9% were on the 1st to the 5th semesters and 57.1% on the 6th to the 9th semesters. Students on the final semesters had a higher prevalence of “letting the colleagues copy the answers” (p=0.05), “using ready-made work” (p=0.04), and “included their name on a paper without collaboration” (p=0.01). The main motivations for academic misconduct were: colleagues cheating (71.4%), believing that professors had committed misconduct (70.5%), difficult subjects (52.4%), and maintaining good grades (50.5%). Students on the last semesters reported lack of time (p=0.05) as a reason, and 10.5% mentioned having performed nutrition appointments without supervision. Given the high prevalence of academic misconduct in undergraduate courses, it is suggested that the discipline on ethics be taught in the initial semesters, in addition to offering courses and conversation circles on intellectual property, ethical conduct, time management, and teaching methodologies.

    No full text
Introduction: while high-risk processes with high accident rates challenge safety, High Reliability Organization (HRO) achieve excellent indicators. In both cases, prevention seems to have reached a limit. In the former, because it seems powerless to generate prevention; in the latter, because it has been so successful that it seems impossible to reach greater levels. Objective: to highlight the contribution of Ergonomics to safety in these situations, pointing out unexplored possibilities such as design Ergonomics in man-machine integration (computerized systems). Method: comparative analysis of findings from ergonomic studies on production systems with high accident rates and HRO. Discussion: analysis of the motorcycle freight drivers’ activity revealed alternatives yet to be explored between unfavorable work relations and the perceived inevitability of accidents. The apparent limit of HRO can be overcome with recent advances in the analysis of situated action and cognition and by building debate spaces based on field experience. Collaborative design practices, which draw on worker experience to feed learning dynamics and technical reliability, remains a poorly explored possibility in Safety Engineering when it comes to computerized systems.
