The main objective of this research was to analyze the contributions of the Pedagogical Action of Ethnomodelling, through Fractal Geometry, for the implementation of Law No. 10.639/2003 in a public school in Minas Gerais by relating the use of fractal patterns present in African and Afro-descendant Brazilian cultures. The pedagogical action studied here, was developed from the study of Fractal Geometry, from the perspective of thinking related to fractals present in mathematical knowledge systems and in the patterns developed by members of distinct African and Afro-descendant cultures. This context enabled the researcher to develop the following research question that guided the conduct of this research: How can the pedagogical action of Ethnomodeling enable the implementation of Law No. 10.639/2003 through the Fractal Geometry approach? To support this research, the theoretical contributions of Ethnic- racial Relations Education, Ethnomathematics, Ethnomodelling, Fractal Geometry and the sociocultural perspective of Mathematical Modelling were used. Data collection was conducted through 1 (one) semi-structured interview with the students’ Mathematics teacher, 2 (two) questionnaires (initial and final) and 3 (three) activities modules with students, as well as the researcher’s field diary. Data analysis and interpretation of results were performed according to the methodological design adapted from the Grounded Theory, through open and axial codings, which allowed, respectively, the identification of preliminary codes and conceptual categories. Data collection and analysis procedures made it possible to obtain answers to the research question and also to validate and ensure the reliability of the results obtained in this research. The results showed that the pedagogical action based on Ethnomodelling and Fractal Geometry promoted meaningful learning by integrating mathematical concepts with cultural and everyday elements. This pedagogical action deepened the participating students’ understanding of fractals and their properties, as well as valuing African-origin cultural knowledge and practices, contributing to compliance with Law No. 10.639/2003. Thus, the results obtained in this study highlighted the importance of pedagogical actions that connect Mathematics, Culture and the cultural identity of the participating students by expanding the scope of the teaching and learning process in Mathematics, aiming to strengthen the cultural roots of the participating students, as well as the inclusion of diverse cultural perspectives in the school environment
Water in nanoporous hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets : a first-principles study.
Nanoporous membranes are being explored as efficient materials for water filtration and desalination applications. In this study, we analyzed the behavior of pores within a freestanding hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) monolayer in contact with water molecules. Our investigation revealed that triangular and rhombic pores induce wrinkles in non-deposited h-BN monolayers because of the repulsion between hydrogen orbitals at their 60° vertices. We found that the addition of N–H or B–H pairs at 60° vertices mitigates these out-of-plane deformations. Surprisingly, the stability of triangular pores with N–H termination is significantly increased by the addition of B–H pairs, whereas the stability of triangular pores with B–H termination is decreased by the addition of N–H pairs, indicating a distinct evolution of the pore shape based on the initial edge termination. Furthermore, we observed that the combina- tion of H and OH is more effective in stabilizing the edges of rhombic pores compared to using only H atoms, whereas the opposite is true for small triangular pores that cannot accommodate the ·OH radical. Our findings also demonstrate that rhombic pores have a high affinity for water absorption, much higher than that of triangular pores. This suggests that the type of pore can significantly alter the hydrophobicity of h-BN and influence water flow through the membrane. Additionally, we observed that water molecules tend to form hydrogen bonds with the N–H-terminated surface in rhombic pores, but not with the B–N-terminated surface, poten- tially leading to asymmetries in water flow through the pore area. Overall, our study provides valuable insights into the interaction between nanoporous h-BN membranes and water
Climate crisis and disinformation on Instagram : AI-generated images of floods and wildfires in Brazil.
The article investigates how images created by Artificial Intelligence (AI) on Instagram represented the floods and wildfires that occurred in Brazil between May and August 2024. The objective is to verifyaesthetic, ethical, and logical characteristics through the analysis of their semiotic properties. The manual collection of most recurring images was guided by the hashtags #sosrs, #sosriograndedosul, #riograndedosul, and #queimadas. With the support of the Google Lens tool, we also collected other images related to the main corpus to identify possible AI learning links as well as other modes of circulation of these signs. The analysis focuses on formal and iconic aspects, moral appeals, conduct suggestions, and reinforcement of beliefs, based on the theoretical-methodological principles of pragmatism and the semiotics of Charles Peirce. As a result, we point out that disinformation manifests not only as a denial of facts but also as a kind of ethical deviation of information, leading to political strife and polarization
Introduction: The benefits of breastfeeding are wide-ranging, long-lasting and progressive for individuals and society. However, breastfeeding is a complex practice, multi-determined by physiological, social and cultural conditions that can keep its prevalence below ideal. Objective: To identify and analyze conditioning factors for breastfeeding practice of nursing mothers in Paraopeba-MG. Methodology: Cross-sectional study, with an exploratory- descriptive approach, of a qualitative-quantitative nature, guided by Questionnaire and Interview. Participated in the study 151 women who gave birth to a live birth in 2022. In the quantitative approach, central tendency, descriptive and association analyses were carried out between dependent variables and the outcomes “exclusive breastfeeding (EBF)” and “ideal breastfeeding (IBF)”. Significant associations (p<0.05) were included in a final logistic regression model. In the qualitative approach, analysis of Bardin Content was carried out in three phases: pre-analysis, exploration and treatment of results by automated textual analysis. Results: The average EBF time was 3.6 months, with 27% of EBF. Out of these, 21% maintained breastfeeding at the time of the study, classified as ideal breastfeeding. There was an association between EBF and IBF with habitual alcohol consumption, weekly work hours below 20 hours, knowledge of long-term benefits of breastfeeding, knowledge of two or more family and social benefits, participation in educational actions, difficulty breastfeeding in the maternity ward, EBF at hospital discharge, use of feeding bottle, and knowledge of ideal EBF time. An association was found between EBF and breastfeeding during the golden hour, and offer of nutritional supplements in the maternity ward. An association was found between EBF and signs of anxiety and depression, previous breastfeeding time of over seven months, living in an area covered by the Family Health Strategy, participating in collective educational actions, knowing breastfeeding techniques, using silicone interposers, and having experienced complications with breastfeeding. The following variables remained in the regression model: working hours below 20 hours per week – EBF (OR 1.06; p = 0.0001) and IBF (OR 0.68; p = 0.0001); absence of regular alcohol consumption – EBF (OR 1.70; p = 0.00001) and IBF (OR 1.70; p = 0.0001); and residing in a Family Health Strategy area – IBF (OR 1.01; p = 0.0001). The qualitative construct demonstrated emotional dysregulation in the puerperium, unpreparedness to breastfeed and lack of support as unfavorable conditions, and appropriation of knowledge about the benefits, technique and prevention of complications, availability of support from pregnancy to the first months of breastfeeding, as favorable conditions. Conclusion: maternal experiences, professional assistance from pregnancy to breastfeeding, physical proximity to the child, mastery of breastfeeding techniques, adaptations to the arrival of the baby, offer of supplements and food supplements, use of artificial nipples, and family, social and professional influence were the factors that conditioned breastfeeding. Feeding practices in the first two years of life demonstrated a situation of nutritional vulnerability due to the introduction of supplements and food supplements before 6 months, weaning before 24 months, insufficient consumption of healthy foods and high consumption of processed and ultra-processed foods, making the commitment of families, society, public and private institutions essential in implementing effective actions to promote breastfeeding
Facial expressions recognition in sign language based on a two-stream swin transformer model integrating RGB and texture map images.
The study of facial expressions in sign language has become a significant research area, as these expressions not only convey personal states, but also enhance the meaning of signs within specific contexts. The absence of facial expressions during communication can lead to misinterpretations, underscoring the need for datasets that include facial expressions in sign language. To address this, we present the Facial-BSL dataset, which consists of videos capturing eight distinct facial expressions used in Brazilian Sign Language. Additionally, we propose a two-stream model designed to classify facial expressions in a sign language context. This model utilizes RGB images to capture local facial information and texture map images to record facial movements. We assessed the performance of several deep learning architectures within this two-stream framework, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Vision Transformers. In addition, experiments were conducted using public datasets such as CK+, KDEF-dyn, and LIBRAS. The two-stream architecture based on the Swin Transformer model demonstrated superior performance on the KDEF-dyn and LIBRAS datasets and achieved a second-place ranking on the CK+ dataset, with an accuracy of 97% and an F1-score of 95%
Antitumor activity and selectivity of a nanostructured peroxo polyoxoniobate.
In vitro and in vivo experiments were carried out to evaluate the activity and antitumor selectivity of new niobium oligomers. A polyoxoniobate (PONb) structure linked to the methylene blue dye (PONb–MB) showed promising results for some types of tumor cells. Molecular structures were determined for PONb and PONb–MB based on spectroscopic analyses using density functional theory calculations. Both caused a significant cell viability reduction in tumor cells (HeLa) with high effectiveness, because of the reactivity oxygen species (ROS) generated on their chemical structure. Experimental quantitative analysis demonstrated high selectivity for tumor cells (apoptosis 3× higher compared to MRC-5 healthy cells). Lower toxicities in healthy cells (e.g., MRC-5 and L929) confirm the selectivity of the synthesized compounds. It is noteworthy that PONb and PONb–MB are physiologically soluble compounds and can be suitable for intravenous treatments. Biodistribution studies in mice revealed very low accumulation in organs such as the spleen, heart, liver, lungs, and kidneys. Additionally, almost no toxicity was observed in the mice post-injection, which was confirmed by biochemical analysis
A systematic review of mathematical practices in integral and full-time education.
This paper aims to analyze the characteristics of Integral and Full-Time Education revealed in mathematical practices at Brazilian public schools. Activity Theory is used to analyze the research corpus produced through a systematic review of literature provided by the Capes Theses and Dissertations Data Base from 2007 to 2024. The results reveal the tensions in the emergence of public-private partnerships and the relativization of the profile of the worker responsible for pedagogical monitoring, sometimes volunteers or educators from a different area of knowledge. They also reveal an effort when using the BNCC, either as a rule, individualizing the training of a student who is expected to be educated to become sensitive to collective issues, or as an artifact, perceived as a sort of parameter for the promotion of mathematical practices guided by alternative methodologies or research trends in Mathematics Education. Finally, it is indicated that the actualization of a Full-Time school committed to expanding students' school experiences requires the proposition of long-term public policies rather than short-term Integral Education programs
Revisiting the parallel tempering algorithm : high-performance computing and applications in operations research.
This study explores the parallel tempering method, an approach that has shown promising results in simulation and is suited for modern multiprocessor platforms. Though relatively unexplored in operations research, the algorithm has significant potential. The study evaluates a newly developed single-node CPU-based parallel implementation of parallel tempering in three case studies involving challenging operations research problems. The evaluation considers both the quality of solutions and response time. The study also proposes an API containing the implementation of multi-core parallel tempering to encourage its use and facilitate future implementations. Evaluation results confirm the effectiveness of parallel tempering, demonstrating significant performance against state-of-the-art methods
The main objective of this research is to analyze the coexistence between structural injunctions and individual claims within the Brazilian legal system. It begins with the origin of structural injunctions in the landmark case Brown v. Board of Education, decided by the United States Supreme Court in 1954, which marked the emergence of a new model of judicial intervention aimed at overcoming systemic violations and promoting institutional restructuring. The study demonstrates that, although the structural injunctions model initially developed in the United States, its application has increasingly gained ground in Global South countries, particularly in Brazil, where it finds fertile ground due to the persistent ineffectiveness of fundamental rights. Structural injunctions, although it may be considered a type of collective proceeding, still lacks specific regulation in the Brazilian legal framework. This regulatory gap has created significant challenges, especially in the context of its simultaneous processing with individual, repetitive claims which, due to their urgent nature, may jeopardize the broad and gradual restructuring logic that characterizes structural processes. The research seeks to answer how the simultaneous processing of individual and structural injunctions can be conducted in a way that preserves the effectiveness of collective solutions without neglecting the protection of urgent individual rights. To this end, it proposes two possible solutions: the application of the suspension mechanism provided in the Incident for Resolution of Repetitive Claims (IRDR), and the adoption of national judicial cooperation
The Social Work congresses that took place in the last decade reflect the changes in the profession in the recent history of Spain along the way towards the achievement of citizen rights. With the critical socio-historical methodological theoretical approach, sources of a bibliographic-documentary nature are analyzed, highlighting the contents of the Acts of the IV, V and VI State Congresses of Social Workers. In the three congresses - Valladolid (1980), Vizcaya (1984) and Oviedo (1988) - the debates were centered on the role of Social Work for the realization of a qualified intervention, and around social policy and social services , in a framework in which discourses on Social Welfare
