Finally, it is concluded that it is relevant to research, both in the field of information presented and in the field of bibliographic contribution

Piperine as an herbal alternative for the prevention of drug-induced liver damage caused by paracetamol.

    No full text
Background/Objective: Hepatic drug intoxication is becoming increasingly common with the increasing use of chronic medications. Piperine has emerged as a promising alternative for protecting the liver against drug-induced injury. We evaluated the prophylactic effects of piperine in C57BL/6 mice with an acute liver injury induced by a paracetamol (APAP) overdose. Methods: Piperine was administered at a dose of 20 mg/kg (P20) or 40 mg/kg (P40) for eight consecutive days before the animals were exposed to a hepatotoxic dose of paracetamol (500 mg/kg). The animals were euthanized 3 h after the paracetamol overdose. Results: The prophylactic treatment with piperine (P20 and P40) maintained the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and the biomarkers of oxidative damage (TBARS and carbonylated proteins), which were statistically similar to those for the control group. The extent of hepatocyte necrosis and TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor-alpha) levels were lower than those in the group exposed to liver injury (APAP group). Piperine modulated the gene expression of CYP2E1 (cytochrome P4502E1) and the inflammasome pathway (NLRP3, CASP-1, IL-1β, and IL-18), which play a crucial role in the inflammatory response. In the P40 group, the degree of hepatic hyperemia was similar to that in the control group, as was the increase in metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) activity. Conclusion: Piperine has demonstrated beneficial and promising effects for the prevention of liver injury resulting from paracetamol-induced drug intoxication

Mineralogical evaluation of a new global ilmenite resource from the coast of southern Brazil.

The presence of superficial deposits of heavy minerals along the Rio Grande do Sul Coastal Plain has generated much interest because of their potential as a new world-class resource. A detailed mineral characterization study of sixteen samples of ilmenite concentrates from the Sao ̃ Jos ́e do Norte deposit was conducted using electronic microprobe and magnetic susceptibility analyses. The results showed that the ilmenite concentrates have a TiO2 content (54.24 wt %) consistent with a mineral assemblage dominated by primary ilmenite and hydrated ilmenite. Histograms and graphs of the variation in minor element concentrations showed enrichment in TiO2, MnO, and Cr2O3 in the altered products and loss of iron and manganese oxides during increased weathering. The alteration ratios measured by the Ti/(Ti + Fe) variation in ilmenite range from 0.50 to 0.65. The altered grains contain primary ilmenite/hydrated ilmenite and pseudorutile phase associations. Different degrees of alteration in the grains were magnetically differentiated, with a greater concentration of the alteration products in the less magnetic fractions. Those altered grains with low magnetic susceptibility may play a critical role during mining because they behave differently from fresh and unaltered grains. This study confirms that the alteration process alters the physical–chemical characteristics of the minerals. Therefore, the degree of alteration influences the metallurgical processing of this ore. The comparison with other deposits shows that the degree of ilmenite alteration of Quaternary world-class deposits is less intense than that of Pliocene to Eocene Australian deposits

This research sought to investigate the ways in which dramaturgy operates in videodance through the analysis of the works O Tempo da Delicadeza (2002), and O Regresso de Ulisses (2008), by cearense director Alexandre Veras Costa, with an emphasis on the relationships between the camera, the body and the space. To this end, I ask: How does dramaturgy operate in videodance? The hypothesis I raise to answer this problem is that the modes of composition in videodance have a dramaturgical nature. To test it, I investigate how the concept of dramaturgy emerged and developed over time, retracing its trajectory from greek theater to postmodernity. I analyze how scenic materials and the processes of creating and operating a spectacle were radically modified by Bertold Brecht's epic theater, post-dramatic theater, the historical avant-gardes of the early 20th century, the neo-avant-gardes of the 1960s and new technologies. I adopt as methodological procedures the bibliographical review to draw a historical overview of the concept, the translation method to describe the two videodance works, the content analysis method to code and make inferences about the composition procedures used by the filmmaker in both works and a semi-structured interview to investigate the subtleties of his creative process. Based on the data obtained from the analysis of the works, the interview responses and the concepts developed in the historical review, I present a reflection on the composition process of the two videodances and propose a possible characterization of their poetics

This work addresses the synthesis and characterization of niobium and cobalt-based catalysts for the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH4), aiming at the production of hydrogen. The study involved the production of pure niobium oxide by the precipitation method and its modification with cobalt by salt adsorption, followed by reduction with NaBH4. Furthermore, commercial niobium oxide was used as a reference standard. The structural and morphological characterization of the catalysts was carried out using several techniques, including X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), N2 physisorption, thermal analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The catalysts were evaluated in the production of hydrogen via hydrolysis of NaBH4 under different reaction conditions. The results indicate that Nb2O5 Sint. and Nb2O5/Co Sint. exhibit diffraction patterns characteristic of amorphous materials, while Nb2O5 Com. and Nb2O5/Co Com. present diffraction peaks associated with the orthorhombic structure of Nb2O5. The synthesized catalysts demonstrated significantly larger surface areas compared to commercial niobium oxide, which may have facilitated greater incorporation of cobalt into the Nb2O5 structure during the formation of the composites. The atomic absorption technique revealed that Nb2O5/Co Sint. and Nb2O5/Co Com. contain 5.8% and 0.14% Co, respectively. In catalytic tests, Nb2O5/Co Sint. demonstrated greater activity in the production of H2 in basic media compared to the other catalysts, with an evolution of approximately 250 mL of H2 in 60 minutes, standing out for its stability over six reaction cycles. The superior activity of Nb2O5/Co Sint. is related to the presence of OH and Co groups on the catalyst surface, where the hydrolysis of NaBH4 and the evolution of H2 occur through the Langmuir–Hinshelwood mechanism

The discussion about monetary, fiscal and exchange rate policies gained prominence due to the recent political scenario. Divergences in governmental approaches towards facing Brazil's challenges raise reflections upon the actions adopted, especially regarding public debt. A report from the Brazilian Central Bank predicted, in 2002, that the Debt/GDP ratio would reach 81% in 2011, potentially generating a significant fiscal deficit and impacting economic growth. This paper focuses on investigating the possible effects of public debt on the economic cycles of federative units. The data hereby introduced stems from the Time Series System of the Brazilian Central Bank from 2007 to 2020 for 13 states, namely: Amazonas (AM), Bahia (BA), Ceara (CE), Espirito Santo (ES), Goiás (GO), Minas Gerais (MG), Pará (PA), Pernambuco (PE), Paraná (PR), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Santa Catarina (SC) and São Paulo (SP). The results indicate an increase in debt, despite the absence of strong fluctuations throughout the period analyzed

The golden mussel, Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857), an invasive species that reached South America in the 1990s, has caused significant impacts on Brazilian aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the potential of the herbicide glyphosate as a tool to control golden mussel populations, whose proliferation results in environmental and economic damages. Two experiments were conducted to assess the toxic effects of glyphosate on golden mussels, revealing a direct correlation between the herbicide concentration and organism mortality. Statistical analysis strengthened these observations, indicating significant differences in the results. Additionally, the feasibility of using glyphosate to contain golden mussel encrustations was discussed, and the possibility of using these mussels as a laboratory study model was explored. The findings highlight the importance of considering environmentally sustainable approaches to address the spread of the golden mussel, while emphasizing the potential of glyphosate as a control option

    No full text
Background: Supplementation with Angiotensin-(1-7) [(Ang-1-7)] has received considerable attention due to its possible ergogenic effects on physical performance. The effects of a single dose of Ang-(1-7) on the performance of mountain bike (MTB) athletes during progressive load tests performed until the onset of voluntary fatigue have previously been demonstrated. This study tested the effects of Ang-(1- 7) in two different exercise protocols with different metabolic demands: aerobic (time trial) and anaerobic (repeated sprint). Methods: Twenty one male recreational athletes were given capsules containing an oral formulation of HPβCD-Ang-(1-7) (0.8 mg) and HPβCD-placebo (only HPβCD) over a 7-day interval; a double-blind randomized crossover design was used. Physical performance was examined using two protocols: a 20- km cycling time trial or 4 × 30-s repeated all-out sprints on a leg cycle ergometer. Data were collected before and after physical tests to assess fatigue parameters, and included lactate levels, and muscle activation during the sprint protocol as evaluated by electromyography (EMG); cardiovascular parameters: diastolic and systolic blood pressure and heart rate; and performance parameters, time to complete (time trial), maximum power and mean power (repeated sprint). Results: Supplementation with an oral formulation of HPβCD-Ang-(1-7) reduced basal plasma lactate levels and promoted the maintenance of plasma glucose levels after repeated sprints. Supplementation with HPβCD-Ang-(1-7) also increased baseline plasma nitrite levels and reduced resting diastolic blood pressure in a time trial protocol. HPβCD-Ang-(1-7) had no effect on the time trial or repeat sprint performance, or on the EMG recordings of the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis. Conclusions: Supplementation with HPβCD-Ang-(1-7) did not improve physical performance in time trial or in repeated sprints; however, it promoted the maintenance of plasma glucose and lactate levels after the sprint protocol and at rest, respectively. In addition, HPβCD-Ang-(1-7) also increased resting plasma nitrite levels and reduced diastolic blood pressure in the time trial protocol. Trial registration: RBR-2nbmpbc, registered January 6th, 2023. The study was prospectively registered

    No full text
This study develops briquettes from fines generated in the processing of manganese ore from a strategic manganeferous district of Minas Gerais–Brazil. The briquettes were produced based on the following variables: compaction pressure (20 and 25MPa), curing time (7 and 28 days), percentage by mass of binder (5% and 10%), and replace ment with tailings (0% and 10%). Technological tests evaluated the compressive, abrasion, impact strength and water absorption. The best conditions for briquette included 10% Portland cement, 10% Mn tailings, compaction pressure of 25MPa and 7 days of curing, as well as 10% Portland cement, compaction pressure of 25MPa and 28 days of curing. The briquettes primarily contained the spessartine, todorokite, quartz, and pyrolusite minerals. The storage time tests indicated that the briquettes responded satisfactorily to storage for three months in a dry environment and at room temperature. Through crackling tests, the briquettes have potential to be commercially used
