On text organization and instantiation from a systemic functional perspective.

    No full text
The paper departs from instantiation to explore text in relation to the quantitative properties of language — more specifically how probability plays a part in the matching of an instance and a particular socially-oriented use. Such matching not only links instantiation and stratification, but also helps explaining how different context configurations (patterns of register and genre) are accordingly related to steps in subpotentialization. The fact that language is an inherently probabilistic system may yield a quantitative account of this process if a more complete modelling of language is to be obtained. As part of our exploration, we compiled a corpus of procedures and applied dynamics modelling to tease out quantitative properties of instances associated with context. We described some properties of instantiation — reweighting, association, and dynamics —, which determine the probabilities of an instance configuration, as they also be- have following register variation. The paper goes on to show quantitatively how the process of subpotentialization is obtained, leading up to a complementary definition of ‘text’ as a probable unit of instantiation. The paper departs from instantiation to explore text in relation to the quantitative properties of language — more specifically how probability plays a part in the matching of an instance and a particular socially-oriented use. No full text
The main objective of this study was to optimize the fermentation process using Serratia sp. BR13816, a bacterial isolate from Amazonian soil, and to evaluate the formation of nanoemulsions. Submerged fermentation was carried out with different carbon and nitrogen sources. Based on the emulsification index and surface tension results, we selected a hydrophobic (corn oil) and a hydrophilic (glycerol) carbon source, and a nitrogen one (urea). For fermentation using corn oil/urea greater emulsification indexes and lower surface tensions were verified at pH 8, 25 °C, and 48 h, whereas for glycerol/urea supplemented medium the best conditions were attained at pH 7, 30 °C, and 96 h. These pre-selected factors (pH, temperature, and time) were used in a central composite rotatable design (CCRD) for an additional fermentation optimization of the two carbon/nitrogen mediums, corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea. The two best nutritional systems based on corn oil/urea and glycerol/urea were selected using a central composite rotatable design (CCRD). The mathematical models using the response surface methodology showed adequate adjustment. The best run of the experimental design for corn oil/urea (6.00% /0.60%) and glycerol/urea (3.00% /1.40%) systems presented surface tension values of 35.70 mN/m and 37.10 mN/m, respectively. The nanoemulsions produced by a low-energy method presented average sizes by dynamic light scattering varying from 453.1 nm to 667.3 nm when 0.1% of the oil was employed. Therefore, Serratia sp. BR13816 showed promising biosurfactant-producing potential for future industrial applications

During the Permian, the southwestern Gondwana margin experienced episodes of intense volcanism tied to the Choiyoi magmatism. Several ash-fall horizons related to this magmatic event are preserved within the Late Paleozoic lake-sea sedimentary record of the Parana ́ Basin. Furthermore, near the Permian-Triassic boundary, a meteor fell in the northern border of the basin, generating unshocked zircon grains preserved in a stratigraphic marker called the Porangaba Bed. In this study, a new U-Pb zircon age of 265.17 ± 3.2 Ma is presented for a volcanic tuff in the upper part of the Corumbataí Formation, near the stratigraphic interval of the Porangaba Bed. In addition, Lu-Hf isotopic compositions of the zircon grains, whole-rock geochemistry, and atmospheric circulation data indicate the affinity of the ash-fall horizon with the Frontal Cordillera source. The combination of these new and previous U-Pb ages allowed us to draw a more realistic scenario of the evolution of bivalve mollusk of the Corumbataí Formation and to improve the use of these macrofossils in the biostratigraphy of the Permian succession of the Paraná Basin. In this context, we established the limits of the Pinzonella neotropica-Jacquesia brasiliensis Association Biozone between 262.38 ± 5.7 Ma and 257.5 ± 2.2 Ma. Hence, in the north and central Paraná Basin the local resolution of this biozone is of ~5 Ma. Moreover, the range of this biozone indicates that the endemic bivalves survived the end-Guadalupian (ca. 259 Ma) extinction event unscathed

Catalysts containing supported metal oxides are very versatile materials used in liquid phase oxidation reactions. The present study aimed to determine the infuence of niobium supported on a silica matrix (SiO2) for the oxidation of thioanisole to methyl phenyl sulfoxide and methyl phenyl sulfone. Characterization of the synthesized Nb5SiO2 and Nb10SiO2 catalysts revealed that although they are not completely crystalline, these microporous materials displayed even niobium dispersion on the SiO2 support whilst containing Lewis and Brönsted acidic sites on their surface. Nb5SiO2 and Nb10SiO2 catalysts showed higher activities compared to pure SiO2 catalyst. Niobium-containing catalysts promoted the subsequent oxidation reaction that converted methyl phenyl sulfoxide to methyl phenyl sulfone. The formation of methyl phenyl sulfone was observed in the presence of niobium-containing catalysts even when using a defciency of H2O2 (0.44 equivalents), whereas the same result could not be achieved for the SiO2 catalyst. The formation of methyl phenyl sulfone occurred in a signifcantly shorter time in the presence of Nb10SiO2, demonstrating the efectiveness of niobium in producing active oxygen species that promote the subsequent reactions. Under the optimized conditions, methyl phenyl sulfoxide could be obtained with 100% conversion and selectivity at room temperature (25 °C) in either acetonitrile or methanol as solvent. Finally, theoreti- cal calculations showed, through energy values, that the niobium-containing catalysts have a lower relative surface energy compared to the pure silica catalyst. The results presented in this research show the potential of the synthesized materials to promote thioanisole catalytic oxidation reactions using hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant

The growing interest in developing and researching new materials is driven by the impacts associated with the extraction of mineral raw materials and the disposal of industrial waste in the environment. This study investigates the use of Quartzite Tailings (QT), Iron Ore Tailings (IOT), and Steel Slag (SS) in cementitious composites to produce Artificial Ornamental Stones (AOS). Initially, a comprehensive systematic literature review was conducted on the use of these tailings in cementitious materials for civil construction. Additionally, experimental research was performed, including tailings characterization, dosage study, and analysis of the physical and mechanical properties of the proposed cementitious composites for AOS. The literature review highlighted the high potential for using these tailings in cement-based composites. The processed tailings used in the composites are predominantly composed of fine and sub-rounded grains. QT contains a high concentration of silicon oxide (94%), associated with quartz, while IOT is predominantly composed of iron oxide (71%), present in hematite, goethite, and magnetite. SS contains calcium oxides (34%), iron (31%), and silicon (16%) in dicalcium silicates, as well as lime, wüstite, and helvin. In the dosage study, formulations with higher IOT contents required more water to maintain proper mixture consistency, which negatively affected the cohesion and strength of the composites and increased their porosity. Conversely, composites made exclusively of QT, both in-natura and processed as recycled aggregate, yielded promising results, as did those composed of QT and SS. This is attributed to QT’s low water absorption and SS's role as a secondary binder and filler, refining the pore system. These findings support using the investigated tailings as a viable alternative for AOS production, aligned with environmental preservation principles, and provide insights for future research

In his two main essays on epic theater, Benjamin suggests that the anti-tragic element of Brechtian theater can be read as a kind of heritage of the Socratic attitude and the Platonic dialogue, transmitted in a “secret and sneaky” way by martyr drama, French classical tragedy, and Trauerspiel
