Freire proposes a curriculum organization based on generative themes that rep- resent the social contradictions experienced by students and the reality to be problematized. Delizoicov (1990) systematized thematic investigation into five stages: 1st - preliminary survey of reality; 2nd - analysis of situations and selec- tion of codifications; 3rd - thematic investigation circle; 4th - thematic reduction; and 5th - program development in the classroom. Thus, this work aims to analyze the implications of the learning process of Chemistry and Biology content using generative themes and differentiated teaching methodologies, such as case stud- ies. For the emergence of the generative theme, we conducted interviews, visits, and research in educational and governmental sources, collecting data from ap- proximately 150 members of the school community, including high school stu- dents, parents, teachers, staff, and residents around the school. Among the initial themes (violence, security, health, drugs, basic sanitation, and infrastructure), "Drugs" emerged as the most significant. Together with Chemistry and Biology teachers, we selected the necessary content to interpret and understand this theme, as well as its social impacts on the investigated community. This article analyzes a case study applied to third-year high school classes in a public school. The case study titled "My Friend Antonio" was used to contextualize the content of Chemistry and Biology, highlighting the relationship between these subjects and the theme of alcohol, the drug that was the focus of this work. The collected data were analyzed through content analysis, as proposed by Bardin (1994). The results of this research demonstrate that the use of the generative theme in the school program structure favors the teaching of Chemistry and Biology, promot- ing a more critical and civic education for students. Education based on genera- tive themes and the application of case studies contribute to understanding how these methods can enhance learning, stimulating critical reflection and the con- nection of knowledge with the students' reality

This study aims to present the history of the intellectual movement related to the Brazilian reception of the philosopher and phenomenologist Edith Stein. To achieve this, we conducted a detailed mapping of the reception of Stein's intellectual production, addressing this movement in two distinct periods. The first period, spanning from 1948 to 1986, begins with the first publications aimed at introducing Edith Stein to the Brazilian public, primarily focusing on a biographical perspective. In this context, the contributions of lay Catholic intellectuals such as Dr. Alceu Amoroso Lima and Hedwig Michel stand out, with their writings about Stein published in the journal A Ordem. Also noteworthy from this period are the biography written by Maria Anna Nabuco and the play Edith Stein in the Gas Chamber, translated by Manuel Bandeira. During these decades, Edith Stein was largely perceived as a Jewish woman who had converted to Catholicism, a perception that remained dominant until the 1980s, with few significant changes. However, the canonization of Edith Stein by John Paul II brought substantial momentum to her reception in Brazil. In this context, Stein's religious figure became a central focus of interest, sparking biographical disputes among Jewish, Christian, and feminist groups, each seeking different interpretations of her life journey and contributions. The second period begins in 1987, marked by the defense of the doctoral dissertation of Sister Jacinta Turolo Garcia, titled Edith Stein and the Formation of the Human Person, at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. Sister Jacinta Turolo Garcia played a pivotal role in this new phase as the rector of the Sacred Heart University (USC) and a prominent figure at the EDUSC publishing house, promoting the first publications and translations of works related to Edith Stein in Brazil. This phase also benefited significantly from the contributions of Professor Angela Ales Bello, who, since 2011, has been introducing Edith Stein to Brazilian audiences through lectures and conferences. This second period is characterized by the consolidation of the academic reception of Edith Stein in Brazil. The International Philosophical Symposia dedicated to her work gained importance, as did the translation of key texts such as Life in a Jewish Family and Other Autobiographical Writings. This moment not only expanded the reach of Stein's work in Brazil but also marked her definitive integration into the national academic landscape, solidifying her presence as a central figure in phenomenology and personalist philosophy

    No full text
Ruthenium(II) complexes (Ru1–Ru3) with the general formula [Ru(O-O)(PPh3)2(bipy)]PF6, bearing two triphenylphosphine (PPh3), bipyridine (bipy) and a series of natural and synthetic β-diketones (O,O) ligands were synthesized and characterized using various analytical techniques. The interaction between the complexes and calf thymus DNA (CT-DNA) was investigated and demonstrated a weak interaction. The cytotoxicity of the complexes was investigated against breast cancer cells (MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7), lung cancer cells (A549), cisplatin-resistant ovarian cancer cells (A2780cis), as well as non-tumour lung (MRC-5) and non-tumour breast (MCF-10A) cell lines. All complexes exhibited cytotoxic activity against all the cell lines studied, with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values ranging from 0.39 to 13 μM. Notably, the three complexes demonstrated selectivity against the A2780cis cell line, with IC50 ranging from 0.39 to 0.82 μM. Among them, Ru2 exhibited the highest cytotoxicity, with an IC50 value of 0.39 μM. Consequently, this new class of complexes shows good selectivity towards cisplatin- resistant ovarian cancer cells and it is promising for further investigation as anti-cancer agents

The toxicity of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles induced on the testicular cells : in vitro study.

    No full text
Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) have gained significant attention in biomedical research due to their potential applications. However, little is known about their impact and toxicity on testicular cells. To address this issue, we conducted an in vitro study using primary mouse testicular cells, testis fragments, and sperm to investigate the cytotoxic effects of sodium citrate-coated SPIONs (Cit_SPIONs). Herein, we synthesized and physiochemically characterized the Cit_SPIONs and observed that the sodium citrate diminished the size and improved the stability of nanoparticles in solution during the experimental time. The sodium citrate (measured by thermogravimetry) was biocompatible with testicular cells at the used concentration (3%). Despite these favorable physicochemical properties, the in vitro experiments demonstrated the cytotoxicity of Cit_SPIONs, particularly towards testicular somatic cells and sperm cells. Transmission electron microscopy analysis confirmed that Leydig cells preferentially internalized Cit_SPIONs in the organotypic culture system, which resulted in alterations in their cytoplasmic size. Additionally, we found that Cit_SPIONs exposure had detrimental effects on various parameters of sperm cells, including motility, viability, DNA integrity, mitochondrial activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO), and ROS production. Our findings suggest that testicular somatic cells and sperm cells are highly sensitive and vulnerable to Cit_SPIONs and induced oxidative stress. This study emphasizes the po tential toxicity of SPIONs, indicating significant threats to the male reproductive system. Our findings highlight the need for detailed development of iron oxide nanoparticles to enhance reproductive nanosafety

Unlocking the potential of MOF-biochar composites : advanced functional materials for adsorption, catalysis, and energy storage.

    No full text
Composites formed by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and carbonaceous materials have gained prominence as advanced functional materials due to their high surface area, high porosity, resistance, optical properties, and stability. While composites based on activated carbon, graphene oxide, and carbon nanotubes have been explored for over a decade, the use of biochars in forming such composites has only recently emerged as a possibility. Despite this, and considering their highly adjustable properties, composites formed by MOFs and biochars have already been explored in several applications, including adsorption and catalytic degradation of contaminants, gas adsorption, electrochemical energy storage, electromagnetic wave absorption, and Knoeve- nagel condensation reaction catalysis. In view of these aspects and given the rapid advancements of this field, this review explores the synthesis, properties, and applications of composites formed by MOFs and biochars (MOF-BC composites). Additionally, it discusses the challenges and opportunities for advancing this field, serving as a significant reference to guide future research in the area

Youth and Adult Education (EJA) and Special Education (EE) have several similarities when their singularities are observed in detail. Both EJA and EE have achieved improvements in their operationalization and guidelines very recently. This is mainly due to the Federal Constitution of 1988 and the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education, which established the rights of the subjects who are the target audience of these modalities, ensuring the right to specialized educational services and educational conditions that meet their particularities and ensure their conditions of access and permanence. In addition, both modalities serve a diverse audience and face difficulties in promoting lifelong education, which made it necessary to understand the interface between EJA and EE, as well as the challenges of this target audience in the regular Basic Education school. This paper is the result of a case study conducted at the Hélio Harmendanni Special Education School, APAE- OP, in which we investigated the pedagogical practices and methodologies developed by the teaching staff and how these actions contribute to the development of people with intellectual and multiple disabilities in EJA. Likewise, people with special needs enrolled in the so-called regular EJA suffer a process of invisibility, since the pedagogical process undertaken in this modality does not always take into account their needs and interests. Faced with this process of invisibility, EJA students turn to private institutions that serve people with special needs so that they can continue their educational process, with APAE being one of the most famous institutions in welcoming these individuals. The case study conducted through semi- structured interviews allowed us to observe a set of relevant pedagogical actions that are developed at APAE-OP and that contribute to the welcoming and development of learning of EJA students with disabilities. These issues were analyzed and debated based on the theories of Lev Vygotsky and Paulo Freire, understanding the relevance of the social role for the EJA student, especially students with intellectual and multiple disabilities. The research also allowed us to reflect on the concept of inclusion and the limits that this concept carries after the numerous public policies created for Special Education in recent years

Hydrogen generation via NaBH4 hydrolysis over cobalt-modified niobium oxide catalysts.

    No full text
The increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere, primarily driven by fossil fuel combustion, is a major contributor to global warming and one of the most pressing environmental challenges of the 21st century. In response, the development of sustainable energy technologies, such as hydrogen (H2) production, has become crucial in the global transition to a low-carbon economy. In this study, we explored the catalytic activity of cobalt-modified niobium-based catalysts for hydrogen generation through the hydrolysis of NaBH4. The catalysts were characterized using XRD, FTIR, XPS, SEM-EDX, and N2 adsorption-desorption. XRD analysis revealed that the synthesized Nb2O5 (Nb2O5 Synt.) and Nb2O5/Co (Nb2O5/Co Synt.) exhibited amorphous structures, while the commercial Nb2O5 (Nb2O5 Com.) and its Co-modified composite displayed orthorhombic phases. The Nb2O5/Co Synt. catalyst achieved a surface area of 33.1 m2 /g, significantly surpassing that of the commercial Nb2O5. The Nb2O5/Co Synt. catalyst exhibited superior catalytic activity, yielding 250 mL of hydrogen in 60 min, in contrast to other catalysts that showed no activity under identical conditions. This enhanced activity was attributed to the presence of surface hydroxyl groups and metallic Co nanoparticles, following the Langmuir-Hinshelwood bimolecular mechanism. Temperature was identified as a critical factor in the H2 production rate, with a calculated activation energy of 11.37 kJ/mol. Moreover, the Nb2O5/Co Synt. catalyst demonstrated excellent reusability, maintaining stable performance after multiple reaction cycles, highlighting its potential for sus tainable hydrogen production

One of the mobilizing activities for improving and achieving well-being, particularly health, is physical exercise prescribed by a Physical Education professional. In this perspective, a study was conducted to find the best space for practice that would be easily accessible to the interested population in the district of Antônio Pereira, a territory affected by mining activities. Promotion through partnerships with the Basic Health Unit (UBS) and the Social Assistance Reference Center (CRAS) reached a group of 16 individuals with various comorbidities, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, rheumatism, and joint problems, for functional training practices near the CRAS. Residents who embraced the practice sought not only motor benefits but also the socialization that physical activities provide. Furthermore, participants reported improvements in physical health throughout the project. However, we hope for the continuity of the program, aiming to reach more people and achieve better results, with periodic physical assessments. This will enable us to correlate the benefits of physical activity with the physical and mental health of the territory's residents, and the integration of Physical Education into collective health

Influence of Mn precursor on pre-pyrolysis modification of sugarcane bagasse biochar for enhanced removal of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid from aqueous solutions : experimental and theoretical insights.

    No full text
Biochars impregnated with Mn oxides were produced using sugarcane bagasse (SB) modified with MnCl2 (Mn(II)- BC) or KMnO4 (Mn(VII)-BC) for the removal of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) through adsorption. The composites were structurally and functionally characterized by various techniques, revealing an irregular surface with oxide microspheres. Elemental analyses showed the presence of manganese and oxygen in distinct proportions. X-ray diffraction identified crystalline planes of MnO and Mn3O4, as well as the amorphous carbon phase. Infrared spectroscopy confirmed Mn bonded to oxygen, and its influence on BC graphitization was corroborated by Raman spectroscopy. Thermogravimetry highlighted the oxides’ influence on thermal stability, while the total number of acidic and basic functions revealed notable differences in surface chemistry. Adsorptive removal of 2,4 D was optimized under conditions of pH 2.00, dosage of 2 g L 1, and particle size smaller than 100 mesh. Adsorption equilibrium was attained after 24 and 12 hours for Mn(II)-BC and Mn(VII)-BC, respectively, with experimental maximum capacities of 36.78 and 57.19 mg g 1. Freundlich and Sips isotherms fit better for Mn(II)-BC and Mn(VII)-BC, respectively, while Elovich and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were suitable. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations confirm that, with decreasing pH, hydrogen bonding takes place. At higher pH,binding with Mn3O4 suggests efficacy in Mn(II)-BC composite adsorption, not observed in Mn(VII)-BC due to an additional oxide, differentiating available sites. Despite Mn leaching challenges, postacid exposure reuse showed favorable removal percentages, indicating potential for reutilization. These findings confirm the suitability of the synthesized composites as adsorbents for the remediation of water contaminated with 2,4-D
