    Experimental investigations to study significant effects of employing a post weld heat treatment (PWHT) technique on mechanical properties of the welded carbon steel have been performed. This paper presents a study on hardness and tensile strength characteristics of a carbon steel A106 grade B welded using shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) method with employing normalizing procedures. With the PWHT technique, heating temperature of the steel, that was set up to 850C, was then maintained for these following set of holding times: 10, 20 and 30 minutes before cooling. Heating and cooling rates of the carbon steel were also slowly maintained. Investigation results under tension showed that the tensile strength of the carbon steel decreased with increase of the holding time. The best tensile strength was achieved by the carbon steel treated with a holding time for 20 min. Toughness of the carbon steel under tension is also discussed in order to correlate the influence of employing the PWHT technique on their fracture modes. Investigation with Vickers hardness test showed that the Vickers hardness on weld metal, weld line, heat-affected zone (HAZ) and base metal of the welded carbon steel, respectively, decreased and tended to be equivalent with the increase of the holding time

    One of the major issues facing the world today is global warming. This problem is caused by the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. A suggested method for controlling the level of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is the prevention of burning flaring gas unit. In this study, two methods are proposed to conserve flaring gas at liquefied natural gas refineries PT. Arun. This method aims to minimize the environmental and economic losses of flaring gas combustion. The proposed method are: 1) utilization of flared gas as fuel for gas turbine power generation and 2) compression and injection of boiled gas into the refinery pipe. Determination of the most suitable methods and tools required for the two methods was done by means of simulation. The simulation was designed to determine the potential power generation and compression power required. The results demonstrate that the use of flared gas as fuel can generate 2130 MW of electricity while requires a compressor with a maximum pressure of 129 bar to inject the flaring gas into the refinery pipe. Study of economic analyzes for both methods was also conducted. From the analysis, it is found that compression of gas into the pipeline requires a lower capital cost than if the gas is utilized as gas turbine fuel. Therefore, the gas injection into the refinery pipe is a suitable alternative to prevent adverse environmental impacts through large amounts of carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere due to flaring gas burning

    In this research, experimental study is conducted related to the latent heat transfer and thermal energy storage using finned tubes. An experimental unit consisted of data acquisition, the heat exchanger shell and tube were used to improve heat transfer. The fluid heat pipe was designed in longitudinal fin and radial fin. Paraffin wax was used as a thermal storage medium. The characteristics of heat transfer from fluid to paraffin wax is investigated in different heat flux conditions. The experimental results show that the heat transfer characteristics show similarities to the heat exchanger tubes. In the preheating process, it is dominated by conduction, but at the melting temperature of the heat transfer, it is dominated by convection. The use of longitudinal finned pipe has been able to increase the heat transfer rate

    The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of variations in the use of fillers for particle board. Various composition of fillers from rice husk and wood sawdust were mixed with synthetic glue matrix of PVAC (Poly Vinyl Acetate Co-Acrylic) and port land cement to produce the particle board. Their effects to the thermal conductivity of particle board (fiberboard) is analyzed. Four walls of particle boards of 25 cm2 were installed in the specialy prepared test apparatus. The measurements were conducted for the surface temperature outside and inside with the measurement interval of 70 minutes. From the results of measurements, the smallest thermal conductivity property is given by kayu jati sawdust with a conductivity of 0.020 W/m0C. Rice husk particle board has a conductivity of 0.024 W/m0C, while the highest conductivity is given by rice husk bran particle board, which is 0042 W/m0C

    A hydraulic ram pumps, or shortly known as a hydram, is a water-lifting device that operates automatically and continuously. It is a device that uses the energy in the flowing water such as spring, stream or river to pump part of the water to a height above that of the source. With a continuous flow of water a hydram operates continuously with no external energy source. Hidram pump design influenced several input parameters such as head, inlet pipe diameter and yield parameters: length of inlet pipe, heavy weight exhaust valve, the inflow speed, output flow rate and efficiency of the pump. In this study, the analysis is done using visual basic 6.0 computer program, as well as completion of the problem in terms of design of the hydram pump. The performance results are then compared with the experimental results. This program aims to ensure that everyone can design and make the hidram pump, with still follow the general rules of the proper design

    PT. Arun NGL has made various efforts torecover losses of energy and water resources during the production process. One of the main focuses for energy conservation is flare gas recovery unit. The flare gas recovery system proposed is skid-mounted type. The primary equipments consists of two compressors that compress the gas from the flare header gas upstream liquid seal drum. The gas is then cooled for reuse in the fuel gas system. The flare gas compressor often experience surge problem due to compressor operating at low flow so that the pressure decreased dramatically while compressor head system stays at high pressure. The compressor playsan important role in generating high-pressure fuel gas. If the compressor is not able to produce enough pressure as required, the production of fuel gas will be disrupted.This analisis focused on the calculation the compressor performance, head, capacity efficiency, and compressor power. Based on the analisys, it is obtained that the flow capacity is 3500 m3/hr, head compressor is 5700 kJ/kg, and the compressor power is 9000 kW. The results show that the operating condition is still whitin the surge limitation

    The study was conducted to measure exhaust emissions and describe the level of air pollution from motorcycles operating in Banda Aceh and and surrounding areas. The measurement of exhaust emissions is done when the engine starts with the average gas pressure between 3000 - 4000 rpm and the motorcycle is in stationary condition, as well as air conditioning in the cabin is off. The measurement parameter is Carbon Dioxide CO2 ( % ) , Carbon Monoxide CO ( mg/m3 ) , Nitrogen Dioxide NO2 ( mg/m3 ) , and Sulful Dioxide SO2 ( mg/m3 ) and the emission gauge used is Quintox flue Gas Analyzer. Based on the results of the study of the level of CO2 produced by motorcycles of various cylinder capacities are 12 % below quality standards. The level of O2 generated in the combustion process of the motorcycles is far above 2% and 1050mg/m3 of SO2. The level of SO2 exshausted is 2% above the quality standard of SO2 set in the Regulation of the Minister of Environment , which is 800 mg/m3

    Aceh marine area has many potential resources that need to be explored, studied, and conserved. These activities require a suitable mean that has capability to bring data collection and observation tools into the seabed. One of the means that can carry out these jobs is the AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle). AUV has an ability to dive without any supporting cables from the surface. It can be programmed to do the required task in the seabed. One of the most important parts on the AUV is the thruster system, a component that provides the thrust force. A thruster is a mechatronic device consists of power source (battery), motor controller, electric motor, and propeller as the main thrust component. A defect in the thruster design will result in the failure of the AUV thus the design of thruster is critical in an AUV unit. In this research, an experiment apparatus was design and fabricated in order to measure the performance of a thruster. The measurement includes the thrust force, the power consumption, and the total effective working time. The proposed experiment apparatus is expected to assist the design stage of the AUV before fabrication in order to minimize the failure caused by defect in the thruster system

    Aceh is one of the biggest milkfish (chanos-chanos Forsskal)-producing provinces in Indonesia and the production is increasing year by year. However, beyond that prospect, there are disadvantages of the milkfish which are able to be putrid easily and are not able to be kept for a long time. In addition, at the time of great harvest and the fish production is plenitude and less of the fish is in use that the price of the fish decreases sharply. The population of Aceh generally like to consume fresh and dried milkfish especially the people in the rural and highland. Based on the result of the previous research, the drying method which is done by putting the fish under direct sunlight is inefective as the sunlight is not perpetually present as expected. Even the quality of the product is low as the fish is contaminated by flies. In addition it requires large drying areas to produce large quantity fish. In this research, it is conducted eksperimental analysis and drying characteristic of the milkfish in the drying process by using drying equipment with gas fuel. The drying equipment used is the shelf type which is located in Thermal Engineering Laboratory, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Faculty, Syiah Kuala University. The equipment consists of burning room, drying room and chimney. The weight of milkfish model is 200 grams, 250 grams, and 300 grams. Based on the test result on the milkfish weighted 200 grams after the drying process, it can be seen that the content of protein 18,97 %,fat 3,75%, water 19,20% with the total drying process of six hour

    The half drying machine is a machine utilised to reduce the additional water content in the raw material. The design of the mechanical system is required that the machine is able to work appropriately. The mechanical system is a combination of machine elements which work as the source of power and rotation in the mechanical work which is the forwarded to the additional water content reducing mechanism. The design process is carried out through semantic, graphical and analytical methods which result in appropriate machine elements selection, i.e. electric motor, driver pulley, belt, driven pulley, pin, driven shaft, single line radial ball bearing and the house, single line axial bearing and the house, and the bolt and nut. All of the elements are in a unity with their own support frame which is able to be separated if required.
