    application/pdfJIS types 2 and 4 titanium and Ti-6Al-4V alloy have been used for dental implantation. Because of the carcinogenicity of vanadium, the use of Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy containing niobium with easy passivation has been evaluated. To develop more suitable implant materials, we performed basic experiments to compare the mechanical properties of JIS types 2 and 4 titanium, Ti-6Al-4V alloy, and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy, using cell culture. As a result, bending strength, and hardness were highest in Ti-6Al-4V, and lowest in JIS type 2 titanium. The amount of strain was higher in JIS types 2 and 4 titanium than in Ti-6Al-4V and Ti-6Al-7Nb alloys. The amount of titanium released from each metal immersed in culture liquid was largest for Ti-6Al-4V. The amount of iron released from JIS types 2 and 4 titanium was second largest. The amount of vanadium and niobium released from alloys was less than 0.03mg/l. As a result of cell cultivation using culture liquid in which titanium and alloys were immersed there were no differences in cell number among the metals.     application/pdfThis study investigated the involvement of a transcription factor STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3) in acute inflammation of the maxillofacial area. We demonstrated localization of some inflammatory cytokine receptors and its downstream signal molecules, JAK (Janus kinases)-Tyk (Tyrosin kinase) family, in trigeminal ganglion (TG). Therefore, when the maxillofacial area is inflamed, it is expected that STAT3, a mediator of JAK/STAT signal transduction pathway, will be up-regulated in trigeminal ganglion neurons that innervate the irritated tissues. Acute inflammation was produced by capsaicin injection to serially the unilateral upper lip, and expression of STAT3 in TG after injection was observed over a 7-day. By immuno-histochemistry, STAT3-immunoreactivities (IR) were detected in small and medium size neurons, and the number of immunoreactive neurons increased both in the ipsi-and contra-lateral TG after injection. Immunoblot analysis showed that the total amount of STAT3 in TG did not change ipsilaterally, but was increased contralaterally. The amount of phosphorylated STAT3 was slightly increased in TG on both sides. These data suggest that STAT3 expression in the bilateral TG is regulated by unilateral acute inflammation.journal articl

    A comparison of commercial tissue conditioners using International Standard (ISO) 10139-1

    application/pdfThe aim of this study was to analyze the composition of eight commercial tissue conditioners, assess each material using the International Standard (ISO) 10139-1 and relate differences in properties to composition. A visible light spectrophotometer (IR-460: Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) was used to analyze the principal components of both liquids and polymer powders. A High Pressure Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC: Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) was used to measure the principal ingredients. A gas chromatograph (GC-15A: Shimadzu, Kyoto, Japan) was used to measure the alcohol concentration. Consistency and penetration tests were carried out as detailed in the ISO 10139-1. The penetration test measurements were also made at 2, 3 and 4 weeks. All materials satisfied the standard in the consistency test and in the penetration test after one week. However, three materials failed to satisfy the standard in the penetration test after two hours. In all materials the powder was found to be poly (ethyl methacrylate), while plasticizers and ethanol content varied. Two materials contained other components thought to be antibiotic or antibacterial agents. There appeared to be a correlation between the ethanol content and the consistency results.journal articl

    デジタルカメラを用いた顔面計測法に関する研究 : 垂直的顎間関係決定法の検討

    application/pdfPurpose: The measurement of facial morphology in order to determine occlusal vertical dimension has been considered important in fabricating complete denture. The present study obtained basic data about the applicability of a facial morphological measuring method using digital camera pictures in comparison with the standard method by using dental calipers. Methods: Thirty male clinical staff (25-47 years old) with healthy natural dentition were recruited as subjects. Digital pictures of the subjects were taken with each in the frontal direction with the mandible at the intercuspal position. Using an image processing program, both the distances from the pupil of the eye to the parting line of the lips and from the base of the nose to the lower edge of the mandible were measured. These distances were compared with those measured directly on the subject's face using dental calipers. Results: On the digital pictures, both distances from the pupil of the eye to the rima oris and from the base of the nose to the lower edge of the mandible were 72.2±3.4mm and 66.1±3.9mm on the average, respectively. Moreover, regarding the distance from the base of the nose to the lower edge of the mandible, simple regression analysis demonstrated that values derived from the digital camera were positively correlated with those from dental calipers (R^2=0.51, p<0.01). Conclusions: Neither result derived from the methods examined in this study fit the theory proposed by Willis. The possibility of applying a digital camera to the measurement of facial morphology was indicated.journal articl

    application/pdfWe report a case of Angle Class I discrepancy treated using the self-ligating bracket system, SmartClip^. A 22-year-old woman conslted our university hospital for orthodontic treatment with a chief complain of lower incisor crowding. She was diagnosed as having Angle Class I malocclusion with lower incisor crowding and a treatment plan using the SmartClip^ Self Ligating edgewise system was developed to reduce the discrepancy and to obtain perfect occlusion. This orthodontic treatment system was newly developed by the 3M Unitek company for reduction not only friction between the main arch and ligation wire but also the duration of wire ligation on the orthodontic brackets. We obtained fairly good treatment result in this patient after 15 months of treatment.journal articl
