Human acid-insoluble dentin with BMP-2 accelerates bone induction in subcutaneous and intramuscular tissues

application/pdfDentin matrix is well known as the most insoluble collagen in human body. We already confirmed the osteoinductive property by granules of human demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) histologically. Human DDM granules and human demineralized root-dentin (DRD) mass were prepared from adult vital teeth. The hard tissue induction by DDM alone or DRD alone was estimated at 4 weeks after implantation. The DDM alone induced bone and cartilage independently. In addition, the bioassay by recombinant human BMP-2 (5.0 .MU.g)/DDM or BMP-2 (5.0 .MU.g)/DRD was estimated in mouse subcutaneous or intramuscular tissues, respectively. Histological examination showed that the BMP-2/DDM induced bone and marrow, and the DDM granules were partially absorbed by new bone. The morphometric analysis demonstrated that the BMP-2/DDM showed 36.3% in the volume of bone and marrow, while the DDM alone showed 1.3% at 4 weeks. Moreover, the BMP-2/DRD also induced active bone formation on the root surface and in the pulp cavity. These results indicate that BMP-2 significantly accelerated bone formation in decalcified dentin implants. Human recycled DDM and DRD might be effective materials as osteoinductive collagenous carriers of BMP-2 for bone engineering. (Author abst.)journal articl

application/pdfIt is now known that the dental condition affects various regions of the human body. Therefore, dental prophylaxis to maintain general health is quite important. We investigated the awareness and opinions about prosthodontic treatment and dental care, by conducting a questionnaire survey among patients, dentists and dental students. The financial value of 28teeth was assessed to be 6.95 ± 11.01 million yen (mean ± SD) by patients, which was half of that assessed by dentists, 15.50 ± 10.88 million yen. In the case of dental students, the price of teeth was evaluated proportionately to the year the student had reached in their studies. Among the organs, the heart was assessed as having the highest financial value. Patients felt that 7,100yen or more for a single treatment was expensive. With regard to the prosthodontic treatment fee, major differences were seen among individuals. The rates suggested by patients who have their dental condition examined regularly at a dental clinic, dentists and dental students were 48%, 21% and 21% or less, respectively. These findings suggest that when we determine the dental treatment fee, an amount of money that patients accept as reasonable should be taken into consideration.journal articl

    角化嚢胞性歯原性腫瘍の1例のMagnetic resonance (MR)画像 : MR imaging (MRI)の信号強度について

application/pdfX-ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are superior to plain x-ray images in evaluating the 3D morphology, the precise internal structure and the tissue component of the lesions. MRI signal intensity clearly represents the tissue component of the lesions in comparison with x-ray CT. Recently, new generation fat saturation system, IDEAL (Iterative Decomposition of water/fat using Echo Asymmetry and Leastsquares estimation), has been developed. Compared to the previous systems such as the chess or STIR (short T1 inversion recovery), it is likely that IDEAL images may reflect true tissue components of the lesions. We report the IDEAL MRI signal intensity of a case of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) that affected the left mandible of 67-year-old male. Characteristic findings were obtained on T1-weighted image and T2-weighted IDEAL water image. The signal intensity of internal tissue component of our case was homogeneously intermediate on T1 weighted image and heterogeneously low to high with a peripheral high signal band on T2-weighted IDEAL water image. IDEAL system may be useful modality for distinguishing KCOT from other similar lesions like ameloblastoma.journal articl

Root canal anatomy of the 236 mandibular canines

application/pdfTo achieve the effect of mechanical preparation of root canals, transparent specimens of extracted 236 mandibular canines were investigated for canal configuration, thickness and curvature of the root canal, condition of any accessory canals, and location of the apical foramen. Fewer than 25% of the specimens showed accessory canals that were impossible to clean mechanically. The majority of the lateral branches were 0.15mm<and≦0.20mm. Although apical foramina located away from the apex were observed in 18% of the mandibular canines. All apical foramina were located within 0.5mm of the apex. Data on the thickness of the root and main canal in the apical portion and curvature of the root canal suggest that for adequate apical preparation, a #60 file must be able to reach the apical constriction.journal articl

    根尖病変の診断治療にCone-Beam CTが有用であった1例

application/pdfA cone-beam CT (CB-CT) that can make three-directional images with high resolution using a flat-panel detector has been applied todiagnoses in the oral and maxillofacial region, such as the assessments of impacted tooth position, morphology of the temporomandibular joint and dental implant placement. Several investigators have also reported the usefulness of CB-CT during surgical useful dentistry. CB-CT can provide the valuable information for properly determining the treatment plan for endodontic-periodontal lesions. We report a case of endodontic-periodontal lesion that could not be indentified by conventional radiographic examinations but was appropriately treated based on CB-CT finding so.journal articl
