application/pdfIn order to understand the present state of things, anticipate the future, and bring about improvements, it is useful to know the history of changes. We, as members of the Japan Prosthodontics Society, would like to show the transition that has taken place in prosthodontics by summarizing the literature between Volumes 1 and 42 of the Society's Journal. As crown-and bridge prosthodontists, in particular, we would like to show the transition in esthetic crown prostheses. There have been 2,983 papers published in the Journal through Volume 42. Papers on esthetic crown prostheis exceeded 50% of all contributions in Volume 31 (1987). In the last 12 years, frequency of this topic has decreased to about 4% of all papers. Because occlusion, mandibular movement and dental materials are studied profoundly in prosthodontics, many papers on esthetic crown prosthesis are related to oral physiology and dental technology. Clinical case reports and statistical research have been published mostly in the 15 years since re-issue, and have decreased ever since. This is characteristic of a scientific society, where much research comes out of research institutes and universities. Recently, papers on implant prosthesis and esthetic dentistry have gradually increased to reflect the demands of the times. In summarizing the work on esthetic crown prosthesis, all of the prostheses were classified as one of the following: jacket crown, facing crown, partial coverage crown, post crown, or adhesive prosthesis. Concerning jacket crowns, papers on twin foil porcelain and hard resin jacket crowns in addition to porcelain and resin jacket crowns appeared since about 1980. Since about 1968, papers on all ceramic crowns increased rapidly. This indicates that all ceramic crowns have improved and were widely used. On facing crowns, hard resin facing crowns changed from the chemical-cure type to the light-cure type about ten years ago, and various metals used in porcelain fused to metal crowns were studied and used in clinical treatment. Papers about facing crown shave been published continually since 1969, which suggests that facing crowns still leave room for improvement, and that they have practical value in clinical treatment. Regarding partial coverage crowns, papers on laminate veneers with a little tooth reduction have been published since 1991. Although few papers on post crown have appeared since 1974, the post crown was replaced by post core. Adhesive prosthesis partial coverage was once used in bridge and splinting appliances, and papers on it have been published for the last 15 years. The adhesive prosthesis has great value in use, owing to a little scraped tooth material and its excellent adhesive property. However, it still has much room for design studies, adhesive properties, and materials. In the last 15 years, esthetic crown prosthesis has developed significantly. In the future, we hope to see a new type of prosthodontics in which patients' teeth can be replaced without complex clinical treatment or constructive techniques.journal articl

A Morphological Study on the Relationship between Arch Form and Craniofacial Structures in Skeletal Class I and Class III Japanese Patient

application/pdfAvailable studies about differences among races, related to prevalence of malocclusion or morphology of head and dental arches, suggest a hypothesis that the high prevalence of skeletal Class III malocclusion in Asian ancestry populations could be correlated with a tendency toward a brachycephalic head form and larger arches widths. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate anteroposterior relationship of upper and lower jaws associated to form of dental arches, maxilla, mandible, face and head. Materials in this research consisted of pretreatment lateral and posteroanterior cephalometric radiographs and orthodontic models of Japanese females with skeletal Class I and Class III. Strong correlations between head form and jaws anteroposterior relationship could not be found. However, results indicated that skeletal Class III have statistically significant smaller length of maxilla and greater length of mandible, than the skeletal Class I group. Moreover, basal arch length and width of mandible were significantly bigger in skeletal Class III group. These results suggest that skeletal Class III, at least in this sample, might be associated to local malformation factors.journal articl

application/pdfA follow-up study was conducted in patients with temporomandibular arthrosis who underwent treatment between 1993 and 1997 at Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Department II of Matsumoto Dental University. The subjects consisted of 325 females and 128 males ranging in age from 8 to 90 years. The patients were classified as type I (15%), type II (15%), type III (66%) and type IV (4%) according to the guidelines of the Japanese Society for Temporomandibular Joint. The patients received initial treatments which included physio-therapy, anti-inflammatory medication and bite splints. Twenty-nine patients with type III or IV were treated with closed joint surgery because conservative treatment was not successful. Closed joint surgery was frequently carried out for the patients who noted a of locking period for more than one month. The success rate of our patients was 78% according to both interviews and the guidelines of the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.journal articl

Observation and Analysis of the Treatment of Anterior Crossbite in Deciduous Dentition

application/pdfThe purpose of this study was to analyze the factors related to anterior crossbite in deciduous dentition and observe relapse after correction until the eruption of permanent anterior teeth. In this study, 50 Chinese children aged 4-6 years old with anterior crossbite of deciduous dentition were analyzed for the relevant factors and different correction methods. The occurrence of relapse was observed. The relapse rate of the hereditary group was the highest. The relapse rate of the group treated with an inclined lower anterior bite plate was lower than that of those treated with a removable appliance with a posterior bite plate and anterior lingual springs. Improper oral habits are a key problem in the anterior crossbite of deciduous dentition, and children with such oral habits-related anterior crossbite should be treated at their early age.journal articl

Coaggregation Reaction between Rothia dentocariosa and Streptococcus oralis

    Get PDF
application/pdfIn the course of studies on assessment of coaggregation among oral indigenous bacteria, Rothia dentocariosa was found to coaggregate Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus mitis. One heat-labile and one -stable binding sites on the bacterial surfaces may be responsible for coaggregation. The binding sites of S. oralis are destroyed by protease treatment. No inhibition of coaggregation activities was demonstrated in the presence of serum, saliva, sugars, and amino acids, however, EDTA inhibited the activities completely.journal articl
