Reliable metal–graphene contact formation process flows in a CMOS-compatible environment
The possibility of exploiting the enormous potential of graphene for microelectronics and photonics must go through the optimization of the graphene–metal contact. Achieving low contact resistance is essential for the consideration of graphene as a candidate material for electronic and photonic devices. This work has been carried out in an 8′′ wafer pilot-line for the integration of graphene into a CMOS environment. The main focus is to study the impact of the patterning of graphene and passivation on metal–graphene contact resistance. The latter is measured by means of transmission line measurement (TLM) with several contact designs. The presented approaches enable reproducible formation of contact resistivity as low as 660 Ω μm with a sheet resistance of 1.8 kΩ/□ by proper graphene patterning, passivation of the channel and a post-processing treatment such as annealing
From creative destruction to destruction of the creatives: innovation in walled-off ecosystems
For a long time, a prevailing view was that due to the dynamic nature of competition in digital markets intervention by antitrust authorities may do more harm than good. It was assumed that Joseph Schumpeter’s “perennial gales of creative destruction” would sufficiently discipline any incumbent digital firm as rivals were only ‘one click away’, switching costs low and network effects reversable. Based upon the economics of innovation, the article first examines the market conditions under which significant product improvement and/or disruptions from outside may develop and unfold. It then examines why such conditions are lacking where a single undertaking largely controls a digital ecosystem. The article concludes that the protective moats and walls that digital gatekeepers have built around their “cash cow” services significantly reduce the incentives and abilities to innovate for any participant within such ecosystem and to disrupt the incumbent’s service. Due to common interests and mutual interdependencies of the operators of the largest digital ecosystems, it also cannot be presumed that the lack of innovation within ecosystems (intra-ecosystem competition) is sufficiently outbalanced by innovation across ecosystems (inter-ecosystem competition). In such a setting, competition policy may no longer assume that dynamic competition sufficiently disciplines even dominant companies and that there is a higher risk from over-enforcement than from underenforcement. Accordingly, the measures proposed, for instance, in the European Digital Markets Act and the American Choice and Innovation Online Act to open up markets for innovation go into the right direction
Vibration-Based Damage Detection on Railway Wheel Tires
Automatic Creation of Masks for Marking Histological Images of the Epithelium of the Paranasal Sinuses
The article discusses the approach to solving the problem of reducing time spent on the preparation of medical images for teaching neural networks, by reducing the time of creating masks for images. The task is considered on the example of processing images of the mucous membrane of the paranasal sinus. The specifics of the task did not allow effectively using existing software solutions. During the study, a software solution was proposed, which made it possible to radically reduce the time of creating masks for images. The article also analyzes the shortcomings of the automated creation of masks, as well as the directions of their solution. The loss of time due to the adjustment of the color palette can be reduced even more to 1-2 minutes, the average deviation is 7.61%

Tailoring of the photocatalytic activity of CeO₂ nanoparticles by the presence of plasmonic Ag nanoparticles
The present study investigates basic features of a photoelectrochemical system based on CeO2 nanoparticles fixed on gold electrodes. Since photocurrent generation is limited to the absorption range of the CeO2 in the UV range, the combination with metal nanoparticles has been studied. It can be shown that the combination of silver nanoparticles with the CeO2 can shift the excitation range into the visible light wavelength range. Here a close contact between both components has been found to be essential and thus, hybrid CeO2@Ag nanoparticles have been prepared and analyzed. We have collected arguments that electron transfer occurs between both compositional elements of the hybrid nanoparticles. The photocurrent generation can be rationalized on the basis of an energy diagram underlying the necessity of surface plasmon excitation in the metal nanoparticles, which is also supported by wavelength-dependent photocurrent measurements. However, electrochemical reactions seem to occur at the CeO2 surface and consequently, the catalytic properties of this material can be exploited as exemplified with the photoelectrochemical reduction of hydrogen peroxide. It can be further demonstrated that the layer-by layer technique can be exploited to create a multilayer system on top of a gold electrode which allows the adjustment of the sensitivity of the photoelectrochemical system. Thus, with a 5-layer electrode with hybrid CeO2@Ag nanoparticles submicromolar hydrogen peroxide concentrations can be detected
Development of a model for requirements validation of repository software and evaluation of the model using DSpace 7 / DSpace-CRIS 7 as an example
The aim of the master's thesis is to develop a model for the validation of requirements in the open source software DSpace 7. To this end, the work investigates the extent to which the minimum requirements and recommendations described in the „COAR Framework for Good Practices in Repositories“ and the „DINI Certificate for Open Access Publication Services“ can be translated into a process model for validating these requirements.
To answer the research question, the requirements contained in the COAR framework and the DINI certificate were transferred to a theoretical reference model in the methodological part of the work in order to classify the requirements and recommendations into thematic categories and dimensions. The model was further developed with the dimension containing the requirements and recommendations for the technical features of a repository software. Based on the COAR and DINI minimum requirements and recommendations contained in this dimension, common requirement categories were used to obtain common requirement criteria. In preparation for the practical testing of the model, an evaluation scale was developed to measure the "degree of requirement fulfillment" in DSpace 7. This made it possible to obtain score values for measuring requirement fulfillment in DSpace 7. Weighting values were defined for different weighting of the scores. The preparation of the model concluded with the selection of resources to be used in the practical testing of the model (in particular DSpace Wiki, DSpace 7 Demo, DSpace issues in GitHub).
The developed validation model was proofed in practice in the form of a „Case Study“ in DSpace 7. For this purpose, the minimum requirements and recommendations of the DINI certificate in the dimension of technical features were validated in DSpace 7. The score values obtained for the degree of fulfillment of requirements were generated along the evaluation scale and recommendations for action were noted in the case of incomplete fulfillment of requirements.
The score values obtained for the requirements validated in DSpace 7 were then calculated in a weighted manner in addition to the unweighted form in order to correspond to the differentiation of the DINI certificate in minimum requirements and recommendations. The score values of the requirements and recommendations for the technical features were then visualized compactly in a spider graph.
The review of the results of the model development and the practical testing of the model shows that the requirements of frameworks, standards, guidelines, etc. can be transferred to a process model for validation in DSpace 7. A significant benefit could be received through the detailed evaluation scale for measuring the degree of fulfillment of the requirements in DSpace 7. This made it possible to precisely determine the degree of fulfillment of the requirements in order to formulate recommendations for action to deal with different levels of requirements fulfillment. It was also shown that the transfer of different standards, guidelines, frameworks, etc. in a common reference model is profitable, since common requirement criteria can be defined on this basis. It enables the reuse of common requirement criteria through other standards etc., if one of the standards etc. is validated in the open source software
Concept for a Portable Measuring Device for the Quantitative Detection of Legionella
According to the drinking water regulation, drinking water systems must be tested for harmful contamination at specified intervals. To meet the legal requirements and save costs and time, a portable analysis method is to be developed. For this purpose, a concept study was conducted. It describes a portable measuring device for the quantitative detection of legionella using real-time PCR. The study includes the construction elements and conditions that are necessary for the collection, processing, and evaluation of the sample. It was found that commercially available PCR systems do not meet the size requirements and can only be represented by an in-house development. In addition, a microfluidic system must be developed that is designed for one-time use and low production cost
Validation of an Innovative Passive Collector for Pollutant Analysis in Groundwater
A passive pipe sampler device for contaminant analysis in groundwater was developed which create a permanent sampling flow from groundwater and in addition to temperature, conductivity and pressure, now also has room for specific sorbents. The large surface of the adsorber offers more binding surface for the analyte and the constant movement of the sorbent with fresh groundwater also provides homogeneous binding. The spectroscopic analyses at the monitoring site of the pipe passive sampler for groundwater monitoring points enables a measurement-based validation of the sorbent circulation as an alternative to a visual assessment. The optimum pump speed for the sorbens Lewatit® M500 and SR7 was evaluated. The 42mm slim measuring device allows the use in DN50 monitoring well and thus allows the setup of a closer measuring network
