[Article] Scale of Crew and Passengers on Trading Ships between Japan and China in the Song to Yuan Periods
In the Northern Song period, the crew and passengers on trading ships between Japan and China usually numbered 60 to 80. It was the optimum number from the point of view of commercial profit and safe navigation, although more people could be accommodated. In the late Southern Song period, it is possible that trading ships between Japan and China carried more people than in the Northern Song period, but there are no reliable examples to prove this. In the Yuan period, some trading ships carried more than 250 crew and passengers. Monks were given passage and went to China in groups of a dozen or tens of people. In 1342, the Tenryuji ship (天龍寺船) carried more than 60 monks to China. The number of its crew and passengers must have been at least a hundred and several dozen, or even over 200, in total. This increase in crew and passenger numbers was caused by the ending of trade control and travel restrictions by the Dazaifu (大宰府), the regional government office, which enabled Japanese monks and merchants to go to China on trading ships. Maritime merchants reduced their cargo and took them on board for the fares. From the South Song to Yuan periods, Japanese passengers were a greater presence in the maritime trade between Japan and China. The change in numbers of crew and passengers did not necessarily depend on improving navigation techniques, but reflected the change of circumstances of trade.departmental bulletin pape
[Article] The Satsuma-Ryukyu Routes on the Ryukyu Kingdom Map : A Detailed Analysis Based on the Diary of Ito Sukemasa’s Voyage to Ryukyu
Only a few historical sources provide specific information on maritime traffic between Medieval Japan and Ryukyu. In this context, the Ryukyu Kingdom Map held by the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Art Museum is a rare, precious source of information on maritime travel between Satsuma and Ryukyu in the mid-15th century. However, due to the lack of supporting evidence, it is difficult to verify the information contained in the Map through comparison with contemporary sources. Therefore, this study compares the Map with early modern records of voyages, especially the diary of his voyage to Ryukyu (1638-1639) by Ito Sukemasa, a Satsuma clansman, to perform a retrospective analysis of how the routes on the Map were used.
This analysis indicates that the three routes illustrated on the Ryukyu Kingdom Map are likely to have been used selectively depending on the direction of travel and the time of year. In particular, the direction of travel when crossing the Shichito-nada in the Black Current was the most important point to consider in choosing a route. This study also reveals that only ships traveling from Satsuma to Ryukyu were required to stop at Kuchinoerabu-jima Island and wait for favorable winds in order to sail the northflowing Black Current. In addition, this paper refers to Kuni Ezu (National Land Map) to identify the ports of call on the routes on the Ryukyu Kingdom Map, such as Kuchinoerabu-jima Island, Amami-Oshima Island, and Tokunoshima Island.departmental bulletin pape

[Article] A Provenance Study of Urushi by Strontium Isotope Analysis
The “urushi“ products excavated from the archaeological sites in Japan and China are about the same age, although some of Chinese products have older ¹⁴C ages, except for the accessories at Kakinoshima B site with the ¹⁴C age of 9,000 years.
In East and Southeast Asia, three tree species produce urushi sap that forms urushi coating film with different main organic components. The analysis of the main components of the urushi products can distinguish the three species. However, it is not possible to distinguish urushi products of the Japanese Archipelago from those of China by analyzing the main components.
Strontium Sr, like calcium Ca, is absorbed from the soil in which a plant grows and is transported to its tissues. The comparisons of the isotope ratio of ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr of the urushi sap with that of the soil in which the urushi tree grew indicated that the Sr isotope ratio of the sap reflects that of the soil. The results of Sr isotope ratio analyses of urushi sap revealed that the ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr of Japanese urushi ranges from 0.705 to 0.709, while Chinese urushi ranges from 0.712 to 0.719. The results suggest a possibility that Japanese urushi products can be distinguished from those of China by Sr isotope ratio with the boundary value of around 0.711. The Japanese archipelago is a mixture of rocks of different origins and ages, but on average, it is composed of rocks with younger differentiation ages from the mantle than the rocks of mainland China, leading to the observed lower ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr.
This study determined the ¹⁴C ages and the Sr isotope ratios of urushi materials from the late Jomon period, the last Jomon period, the middle Yayoi period, and the Heian period. Because the results obtained for the Shimoyakebe site suggested that physical and chemical effects during burial did not significantly modify Sr isotope ratios, we applied this method to ancient excavated materials. The results of isotope analyses on several archaeological sites showed that urushi sap may be locally produced for local consumption.departmental bulletin pape
