[Article] Plantation and Utilization of Toxicodendron vernicifluum and Castanea crenata in the Japanese Archipelago during the Jomon Period
Archaeobotanical studies carried out in Japan during the last thirty years have shown that, at least in central to northeastern Honshu, people carried out a sophisticated management of plant resources around their settlements since the early Jomon period starting at ca. 7000 years ago. This management system was centered on a native chestnut species, Castanea crenata, and an introduced lacquer tree, Toxicodendron vernicifluum, and people used the fruits and wood of chestnut trees and the lacquer, fruits, and wood of lacquer trees extensively by maintaining their resources around their settlements. However, plant remains of these two species occur quite differently around Jomon sites. Wood remains of chestnut trees occur commonly from central to northeastern Honshu to southwestern Hokkaido at 406 sites, whereas those of lacquer trees occur sparingly in central to northeastern Honshu at 35 sites. At respective sites where both trees occur, wood remains and pollen of chestnut trees usually occur 10 to 100 times as common as those of lacquer trees. To examine reasons for this discrepancy in the occurrences of these two trees at Jomon sites in spite of the common occurrence of lacquerware in central to northeastern Honshu, three hypotheses were tested. The first hypothesis postulated that settlements with lacquer tree plantations were far fewer than those with chestnut tree plantations during the Jomon period. The second hypothesis postulated that the more inland location of lacquer tree plantations than that of chestnut tree plantations, that was away from the depositional sites of plant remains, hindered the preservation of lacquer tree remains and the detection of the existence of lacquer trees around Jomon settlements. The third hypothesis postulated that the amount of lacquer tree resources was usually far less than that of chestnut trees at usual Jomon settlements. The analysis supported the second hypothesis most positively, but the first hypothesis also had some importance in relation to settlement characteristics at the regional level.departmental bulletin pape
[Article] Maritime Interaction and Routes between the Korean Peninsula and the Chinese Mainland in the Mongolian Era
This study examines maritime interaction between the Korean Peninsula under the reign of the Goryeo Dynasty and the Chinese Mainland under the rule of the Yuan Empire from the mid-13th to the mid-14th century with focus on the maritime routes they used. While strengthening political integration with the Goryeo Dynasty, the Yuan Empire was carrying out a variety of political and military activities off the Korean Peninsula, including expeditions against the Japanese. The central authorities of both the Dynasty and Empire transported food and other goods between the Korean Peninsula and the Liaodong Region or North and South China. In addition, trade brought goods between the Korean Peninsula and North China, where the Empire’s new capital of Daidu had been just established, as well as and South China, which had been the major trade destination of the Goryeo Dynasty since the preceding period.
At that time, ships from the korean peninsula to the Liaodong Region sailed around the Liaodong Peninsula. Ships to North China seem to have sailed along the south coast of the Liaodong Peninsula to the Shandong Peninsula and traveled along the coast of the Bohai Gulf towards Zhigu, the outer port of Daidu, most of the time. Meanwhile, ships from the Korean Peninsula to South China seem to have either sailed south along the south coast of the Liaodong Peninsula to the Shandong Peninsula and continued to travel south along the coast of North China or sailed south along the west coast of the Korean Peninsula and then crossed the East China Sea.departmental bulletin pape
[Article] Reconstruction of Neolithic Shell Trade Based on Radiocarbon Data from Shell Deposits in the Okinawa Islands (2), FY2019
This paper suggests a reconstruction of shell trade during the Yayoi period based on radiocarbon research carried out by the collaborative project group "Yaponesia". 79 shells were collected from 37 deposits in 23 sites on the Okinawa islands, where the shells have their natural habitat. Radiocarbon dates were acquired and calibrated by the Marine20 method.
From the 12th to 9th century BC, interaction between two populations occurred along the Kuroshio stream. In the south, groups from the Okinawa islands sailed along the coral reefs of the Kuroshio area. The other group relates to the Jōmon population in Kyūshū. They mostly sailed along the western coast of Kyūshū southward to the northern Kuroshio area with its few coral reefs. In this area between south Kyūshū and the northern parts of the Kuroshio stream interaction between both groups can be observed. Later in the 8th century BC, groups from the Yayoi population from Kyūshū straightly sailed down to the Okinawa islands, and since the population of Okinawa accepted the newcomers, this direct relationship between both groups could evolve into shell trade. Evidence of this process are cist burials left at Momenbaru site on Okinawa island. The incipient period of shell trade corresponds to the later half of the Nakabaru type pottery stage of the Late Shellmound period in Okinawa and the Itazuke 1 type pottery stage in the Early Yayoi period in northern Kyūshū.
In Late Shell-mound sites in Okinawa, various forms of shell deposits can be observed. They contain unrefined shell bracelets or just unprocessed shells. These can be regarded as storages for trade.
A number of shells from a selection of deposits were analyzed as regards their dates and their find locations. The results show mainly two cases:
Deposits were created and used several times for trade; they include old shells left by former trade interactions beside shells that were prepared for a last trade interaction; these are deposits in base sites.
Deposits that were created for a one time trade interaction and left unused later; many deposits belong to this case.
The Yayoi population in Kyūshū almost ceased to use shells from Okinawa around the middle of the 2nd century AD, while later, during the 4th century AD, part of the Kofun population from the Kinki region started consuming these shells. Since shell deposits in Okinawa are almost not known from the period around 200 AD we can conclude that consumption and production of shells in two places correspond clearly.departmental bulletin pape
[Article] Buddhist Sculptors in Kyoto and Local Sculptors in the Edo and Meiji Periods
Most wooden Buddhist sculptures made for worship were decorated with gold leaves and/or colorful paints. Such surface decorations on sculptures from the Early Modern period have mostly survived. However, there are small areas where paint has peeled off or has been lost over time. The use of animal glue as an adhesive or Japan’s humid climate could have influenced the degradation. Naturally, some of these degradations require conservation treatment. It is necessary for conservators to know the materials, causes of degradation, history of Buddhist sculptures, and the intention behind their creation. However, modern Buddhist sculptures have not been properly evaluated from the perspective of art history; there is not enough research on the history of modern Buddhist sculptures, their materials, or the technology used.
This study focuses on the history of modern sculptures made by two groups of sculptors. The first, Kyoto-Shichijo Bussho, is an authentic Buddhist sculpture studio, and the second is a local studio in Yamagata Prefecture. Throughout the Edo period, the Kyoto-Shichijo studio was a major Buddhist sculpture studio. There were also many private sculptors in Kyoto, whose numbers increased in the middle of the Edo period. However, both sculptor groups of Kyoto gradually declined over time. In contrast, local sculptors came up and became active in their respective areas in the middle of the Edo period. The Yamagata region, which flourished after the Genroku era (1688–1704) because of domestic trade, was selected as a representative local area for fieldwork since the region had economic ties with Kyoto. In this region, we can find Buddhist sculptures made by both Kyoto and local sculptors. In the Kyoho and Kansei eras (1716–1801), an economic crisis severely influenced the Buddhist sculpture’s manufacturing society. First, the historical stream of Kyoto sculptors is overviewed. Then, the study describes the activities of local sculptors in the Yamagata region through their works. Development of technologies and their relation to Kyoto sculptors were investigated along with the historical background of manufacturing.departmental bulletin pape

[Article] The Process of Making the Taiheiki Picture Scrolls
The Taiheiki is a war chronicle set in Japan’s Namboku-cho period and consists of 40 volumes. The Taiheiki Emaki is an illustration of the Taiheiki and is known as the oldest set of picture scrolls of its kind. It was originally a set of twelve volumes drawn in the middle of the 17th century. Currently, only ten of those remain. The scrolls belonging to the collection of the National Museum of Japanese History are thought to be a part of this set (volumes 5, 11, and 12). The set also constitutes the scrolls belonging to the collection of the Saitama Prefectural Museum of History and Folklore (volumes 1, 2, 6, 7, and 10) and the Spencer Collection of New York Public Library (volumes 3 and 8). It has been pointed out that the compositions and motifs have been quoted from major picture scrolls of the previous age; there are many similarities with the picture scrolls of Tawara-no-Tota. Taiheiki Emaki is attributed to Kaihō Yūsetsu (1598–1677), but there is no proof.
This paper introduces instructional inscriptions about the colors and motifs across the ten volumes of Taiheiki Emaki and examines the process of making the scrolls. Specifically, the instructions with regard to colors such as “roku” (green), “kon” (blue), “shu” (red), and “tan” (orange) and indications of architectural components such as “tatami” (a Japanese mat) and “heri” (the edges of a tatami) are recognized. These careful inscriptions on the scrolls prove the existence of an earlier version of the painting, and several painters were involved in this production. Furthermore, the text, which is more important than the paintings, seems to have been disregarded, and there was a historical document written. Kaihō Yūsetsu made a thirty-volume Taiheiki Emaki, suggesting that the text and illustrations were independently present in the original version. The examined set of Taiheiki Emaki could be an abridged version of the original.departmental bulletin pape
