A Combination of Bluetooth Physical Layer Key Generation and Physically Unclonable Functions for Lightweight Security in IoT Edge Nodes
The proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) and embedded systems across various domains has heightened the need for secure, lightweight cryptographic mechanisms tailored to resource-constrained devices. Traditional encryption protocols are often too computationally intensive for these applications, prompting exploration into alternative security methods. This study presents a novel lightweight cryptographic Physical Layer Key Generation (PLKG) approach that leverages Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) channel entropy to generate secure session keys. To enhance system security further, Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are integrated, providing device-specific authentication and protection against cloning attacks. To our knowledge, this is the first system that combines wireless channel randomness and PUFs as hybrid entropy sources. Experimental results demonstrate that this BLE-based key derivation method, combined with PUF technology, yields a unique, lightweight security solution suitable for automotive and IoT applications. The proposed BLE-based key generation method successfully passes the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Statistical Test Suite

Can We Talk Models Into Seeing the World Differently?
Unlike traditional vision-only models, vision language models (VLMs) offer an intuitive way to access visual content through language prompting by combining a large language model (LLM) with a vision encoder. However, both the LLM and the vision encoder come with their own set of biases, cue preferences, and shortcuts, which have been rigorously studied in uni-modal models. A timely question is how such (potentially misaligned) biases and cue preferences behave under multi-modal fusion in VLMs. As a first step towards a better understanding, we investigate a particularly well-studied vision-only bias - the texture vs. shape bias and the dominance of local over global information. As expected, we find that VLMs inherit this bias to some extent from their vision encoders. Surprisingly, the multi-modality alone proves to have important effects on the model behavior, i.e., the joint training and the language querying change the way visual cues are processed. While this direct impact of language-informed training on a model's visual perception is intriguing, it raises further questions on our ability to actively steer a model's output so that its prediction is based on particular visual cues of the user's choice. Interestingly, VLMs have an inherent tendency to recognize objects based on shape information, which is different from what a plain vision encoder would do. Further active steering towards shape-based classifications through language prompts is however limited. In contrast, active VLM steering towards texture-based decisions through simple natural language prompts is often more successful. URL: https://github.com/paulgavrikov/vlm_shapebia
AI-powered inventive design: idea funnelling, concept creation, and hybrid problem-solving teams
Generative AI, guided by inventive heuristics, can systematically and rapidly generate hundreds of ideas for engineering inventive design problems. This paper examines the reliability and effectiveness of AI-powered “idea funnelling,” a process that generates, evaluates, filters, and synthesizes raw ideas into feasible solution concepts. Key challenges include the consistency and objectivity of AI-driven evaluations, the robustness of concept generation, and the collaboration of multiple AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Gemini. The study explores the integration of human expertise in hybrid problem-solving teams to improve feasibility, contextual relevance, and innovation quality. Through comparative experiments, it provides insights to improve the reliability of AI-driven concept creation and the performance of hybrid AI-human teams in solving complex engineering design problems
The Impact of AI Avatars on Programming Education
Many students in Germany struggle to choose a career path, with few pursuing IT due to limited access and support, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds. Since 2014, the Hacker School gGmbH has aimed to inspire these students to learn programming, addressing educational inequality and the IT talent shortage. Building on this, the federally funded TALAINTED project, in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Artificial Intelligence, developed a multilingual online course featuring AI avatars. This innovative format enables flexible, accessible, and self-paced learning through unlimited repetition and step-by-step guidance. This study assessed the impact of the course on 272 students, mainly aged 12–14, from schools in Germany. Surveys before and after the course revealed a significant increase in interest in programming, with ratings rising from 4.06 to 4.5 (p < .01). Students preferred the avatar-based course format over traditional methods (4.31 vs. 3.79, p < .01) due to its personalized learning approach. Participants also learned programming more effectively than expected, with perceived helpfulness of the course increasing from 4.94 to 5.15 (p < .05). AI avatars were found to improve concentration (4.29 vs. 5.08, p < .01) by minimizing distractions. Participants also reported finding new concepts easier to learn (5.09 vs. 5.36, p < .01) and enjoying the learning process more (4.59 vs. 5.47, p < .01). The gamified design and storytelling elements increased engagement and intrinsic motivation. Crucially, the course positively influenced students’ career aspirations, with motivation to pursue programming professions rising from 3.14 to 3.47 (p < .01)

Motivating Temporary Employees
The following bachelor thesis is dedicated to the motivation of temporary agency workers. Although they form an important part of the German labor market, research on their motivation is scarce. Established motivational factors hardly apply to their situation and their special work relation. That is why their circumstances must be specifically addressed and individually analyzed.
The work focuses on the sphere of influence of the client companies that deploy temporary employees. It serves to derive practical recommendations. By that, the relevance of the topic is emphasized, and the client companies get approaches to increase the motivation of their temporary employees.
Based on a theoretical approach and established motivational theories, the recom mendations are derived. Theory serves as a base for argumentation to guarantee the psychological verification of the implications. In the following, the theory is applied to the specific situation of the temporary employees. It results in implementable approaches for client companies.
The bachelor thesis emphasizes the relevance of the topic, analyzes the current situation of the temporary employees and results in theory-based actionable recommendations for client companies.
"The Art of Emotion" - Production of Art
This Bachelor's thesis is dedicated to the technical production analysis of the short film project “The Art of Emotion”, which deals with the representation of human emotions in narrative, visual and auditory forms of expression. The focus is on the organization of the production, which uses cinematic design elements such as camera and lighting work, set design, editing, color dramaturgy and music to not only depict emotional states such as happiness, sadness and love, but to make them tangible. The work is divided into a practice-oriented production documentation and a reflective analysis of individual design decisions during pre-production, shooting and post-production. Methodologically, the project is viewed as an interdisciplinary artistic-collaborative process that combines both organizational and creative challenges. Topics such as team leadership, crisis management, production planning, artistic conception and media-aesthetic decisions are systematically examined. The aim of the work is to use a concrete case study to examine the interplay between emotional demands and cinematic realization and at the same time to provide insights into the complex reality of independent film productions in the context of student projects
