    No full text
In recent years, smart mirrors have established themselves as a key technology within the Internet of Things (IoT), primarily serving as interactive information displays in everyday situations. While commercial solutions are widely available, a strong community of developers continues to create and refine customized smart mirror systems. Despite numerous projects in this domain, there is currently no known solution that seamlessly integrates touchless gesture control with AI powered image recognition. This thesis focuses on the conceptualization and implementation of a gesture controlled smart mirror that functions not only as an interactive information display but also incorporates an AI-driven (Artificial Intelligence) drawing game. The study is guided by the central research question: "How can a gesture-controlled smart mirror, integrating both everyday information and an AI-based mini-game, be designed and implemented to ensure long-term usability in a university environment while offering a reliable, intuitive, and interactive user experience?" The development is based on a comprehensive system design, which considers key requirements such as the intended target audience, usability factors, and technical constraints. For implementation, MagicMirror² was used as the core software platform for information display, while MediaPipe and OpenCV handle gesture recognition. The AI-powered real-time image classification is facilitated by a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained specifically for this purpose. The results demonstrate that the integration of these technologies leads to an innovative and efficient smart mirror solution. The incorporation of touchless gesture control enables a modern and intuitive mode of interaction, while the AI-driven drawing game introduces a playful learning experience

Development of a computer vision model for the pecan crack identification, classification, and control

    No full text
The advent of computer vision and pattern detection capabilities has given rise to the use of imaging technology in feedback and control processes. One such example is the use of imaging in agricultural post-harvesting equipment to enable machine automation through the use of imaging at the discharge. To explore this, the thesis will consist of developing a simulation in Python of the cracking process of pecans using experimental data, computer vision, and artificial intelligence (AI). In the cracking process, there are some variables as data that are the input for the machine and the output as videos recorded on the exit of cracking. Some classifications for the type of crack are determined, and the goal is to know and be able to modify the inputs to obtain the desired class of crack. An AI model will be tested and trained in Python with experimental data

Three-Dimensional Computer-Aided Design Reconstruction and Finite Element Method Analysis of the Complex Inner Mechanics of the Second Iron Hand of Franconian Imperial Knight Götz von Berlichingen

    Get PDF
Background/Objectives: The subject of this work is the reconstruction of the inner mechanics of Götz von Berlichingen’s second iron hand. The complex inner mechanics were unknown until Christian von Mechel published a detailed description in 1815. In this artificial hand, each finger can be engaged individually in its three joints and the thumb in one joint. Methods: Based on this description, the individual components were reconstructed at an enlarged scale of 2:1 using computer-aided design (CAD) software and a three-dimensional (3D) printer for the mechanisms. In addition, a finite element method (FEM) analysis was carried out for the components exposed to the greatest stress in order to identify critical areas. Results: By making some adjustments to the mechanics, it was possible to reproduce the mechanisms on a scale of 2:1 on the basis of the index finger. However, when the model was rescaled to 1:1, the internal plastic components were too fragile. This problem was caused by the properties of the 3D printing materials and could be solved by manufacturing the springs from steel. Conclusions: This work aims to make a valuable contribution to the preservation and understanding of the historical artificial second iron hand of Götz von Berlichingen. It once again demonstrates the very precise and detailed craftsmanship of goldsmiths of that time

Critical Thinking Skills and Computer Simulations of Free Rigid Body Motion

    No full text
Engineering students should be able to recognize errors in simulation videos and explain correctly why an object is moving in a particular way. The purpose of this publication is to introduce tasks for checking students’ ability to use critical thinking skills for analyzing free rigid body simulations. The topics of the tasks are related to the behavior of the center of mass and rotational motion about principal axes. Special attention has been paid to the difference between the Dzhanibekov effect and the tennis racket phenomenon and to the influence of initial conditions on the motion. We also present data that came from our colleagues and former students’ responses to the corresponding quiz. Our findings strongly suggest that it is difficult to distinguish correct simulations from simulations with gross mistakes even when the respondents know all necessary physical concepts and laws. Presented tasks with corresponding videos and illustrations could be easily used during physics lectures, seminars, and tutorials. These activities could improve students’ ability to use physics laws and discern accurate representations. They also may become a starting point for student research projects

BKM_2.0 - Analyse der Peer-2-Peer Vermarktung von Strom und Entwicklung eines Bilanzkreismanagements 2.0

    No full text
The BKM_2.0 project was dedicated to the in-depth analysis and evaluation of the integration of peer-to-peer (P2P) electricity trading models into the German energy system. A particular focus was on the further development of traditional balancing group management (BKM), taking into account changing prosumer behaviour, decentralized market players and innovative platform solutions. The project developed a comprehensive characterization of peer-to-peer concepts and (further) developed models for the analysis of peer-to-peer concepts on a local to national level. The regional model analyses show that local trading concepts benefit greatly when the heterogeneity of actors and technologies increases. The model developed for this analysis was published open-source. At national level, the MyPyPSA-Ger model has been further developed to allow a detailed analysis of the potential system effects of area-wide local trade opportunities. A demonstration project of an energy community was implemented in Aschaffenburg, the findings of which are presented in detail in the final report. On-boarding, participant support and billing proved to be more complex than planned. In the project, the current balancing group management was analysed with regard to its future requirements and aspects for further development in the future were developed based on current processes. In the area of load forecasting, various procedures for the community were tested and evaluated. Finally, the options for the further development of the electricity market design were classified from the perspective of the balancing group managers
