Methodology for Deriving Eigenvalue Formulas in Steering and Body Systems under Force-Controlled Conditions

The natural frequency and damping ratio of the steering system are essential metrics for describing its dynamic characteristics. Since the driver rotates the steering wheel by applying torque, these metrics are critical for designing a more direct steering feel. They are obtained by solving a fourth-order characteristic equation. To achieve a compact representation, a three-step procedure has previously been proposed to derive approximate solutions. In this study, an alternative formulation is developed based on the known property that the natural frequencies are independent of vehicle speed. This property allows the derivation of eigenvalue formulas through purely algebraic operations. The resulting process is expected to facilitate clearer understanding and enable more precise application of the metrics in designing the dynamic behavior of steering systems.departmental bulletin pape

    Prices and Wages in Japan

In Japan, real wages have fallen due to inflation since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. In this paper, we analyze the factors of the decline in real wages and discuss the policies to recover the linkage between wages and prices. Since the late 1990s, the long stagnation in labor productivity has been the main factor of the decline of real wages. In addition, the increase in import costs caused by the real exchange rate depreciation hindered real wage growth. Finally, using the Balassa-Samuelson model, we show that labor productivity growth is a key factor that suppress import costs through the real exchange rate appreciation, and that recover the linkage between wages and prices.departmental bulletin pape

Effects of PQQ and CoQ10 on UV damage and wound healing in normal human epidermal keratinocytes

UV damages DNA, phospholipids and proteins on cell, disturbs the structure and function of the living cells, and is thought to promote skin aging such as spots and wrinkles on the skin. In order to find a highly safe substance that has a protective effect against skin damage caused by UV and to investigate its mechanism of action, we investigated food-derived substances that might have a protective effect against damages of UVB damage using normal human epidermal keratinocytes (NHEK). A scratch assay was performed to investigate the wound healing effect of the same substance on NHEK. Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), and coenzymeQ10 (CoQ10) were known to food-derived antioxidative product and to have different structure and origin. PQQ and CoQ10 showed a protective effect against damage caused by UVB, In the scratch assay, PQQ and CoQ10 showed significant wound healing effects. These results will be possible to use elucidated the mechanism of the protective effect.departmental bulletin pape

Revitalizing from Within: A University-Community Collaboration for Sustainable Rural Regeneration in Post-Disaster Fukushima

In the aftermath of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster, many rural towns faced compounded challenges of depopulation, economic decline, and social fragmentation. This paper explores a seven-year university-led community engagement project in Kawamata Town, Fukushima, aimed at fostering sustainable and community-led revitalization. Using a narrative research approach, the paper traces the project’s evolution through three phases: pre-COVID-19, during the pandemic, and post-COVID-19, highlighting how university students and faculty collaborated with local residents to co-create initiatives rooted in local culture, traditions, and needs. Drawing on interviews, field observations, and reflections, the paper emphasizes the importance of reciprocity, long-term relationship-building, and flexible adaptation to shifting circumstances. It also discusses emerging challenges and lessons learned in balancing the roles of external facilitators and local actors in sustainable rural regeneration.departmental bulletin pape
