The Contemporary Significance of Leo Strauss's Theory of Tyranny Based on His Interpretation of Ancient Philosophy
Although a wide variety of points can be found in Leo Strauss’s On Tyranny, in this article, I focus on tyranny itself, which is generally considered the opposite of democracy, and I particularly focus on issues surrounding tyrannies in ancient and modern times. Based on Strauss, I first clarify what tyranny was in ancient times, then elucidate the forms of tyranny in modern times to consider the contemporary significance of his argument in relation to issues of science and technology. This article is a revised and expanded Japanese version of my article ‘Leo Strauss's Theory on Tyranny: Ancient and Modern’ written in English and published in the Journal of International Studies, No.10, 2024.departmental bulletin pape
Effective Approaches for Improving Listening Comprehension in EFL Learners
The purpose of this study is to examine whether incorporating silent mouthing into classroom instruction can enhance EFL learners’ listening comprehension. The participants were 81 first-year university students enrolled in a TOEIC® preparation course. The findings indicated that, for the higher proficiency group, lessons incorporating silent mouthing led to a significant improvement in listening comprehension, suggesting that this method may be effective for advanced learners. Furthermore, even among the lower proficiency learners, listening comprehension improved to a degree comparable to that of those who engaged in oral reading, despite the absence of auditory feedback. This outcome suggests that silent mouthing, when preceded by preparatory activities such as oral reading that familiarize learners with vocabulary and pronunciation, can be effective even for students with limited proficiency. These results highlight the importance of instructional design: through appropriately scaffolded learning processes, silent mouthing may reduce the cognitive burden and promote listening development across varying proficiency levels.departmental bulletin pape
A study on the landscape maintenance as a means of interaction in disaster public housing:a case study of timber disaster public housing for 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake
論文In the timber single-story public housing constructed for 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake, outdoor spaces were intentionally designed to facilitate interaction among residents. Interviews conducted as part of this study revealed that the most commonly cited opportunity for residents to gather within the housing complex was through organized outdoor cleaning activities. These findings suggest that, in order to promote social interaction among residents in disaster public housing, it is essential to understand the influence of exterior design on residents’ participation in maintenance activities. This study therefore focuses on wooden single-story disaster public housing and aims to elucidate how specific elements of exterior design —such as surface finishes, planting schemes, and spatial layout—affect residents’ maintenance behavior and opportunities for social interaction.departmental bulletin pape
Experiment with Batteries Science
電池なしでは現在の便利な生活は出来ない。身の回りの多くの所に使われている電池について児童生徒に興味を持っていただくため,多くの種類の電池を作成して,それらの発電の原理を理解できる22件の体験実験を実施した。これらの体験実験のアンケート結果から,5感を使った実験の重要性とこれらの活動が理科へのモチベーションを高揚させる効果があることを明らかにした。A modern convenient life would not be possible without batteries. In the science experiments, participants built several types of batteries used in everyday life to get the students interested in batteries. Additionally, they conducted 22 experiments to explain the principles of power generation. The experimental results and answers to the related questionnaire revealed the importance of using the five senses to motivate the students.論文:Paperdepartmental bulletin pape
