    Piil Pesenggiri: A Concept of Political Power in Lampung Culture

    Power is the main focus of political science, so far the concept of power that exists in Indonesia comes from the conception of western cultural thought, especially Europe, which influenced the thinking of the thinkers of the era of Greece, Rome, and medieval Europe. After the reform and era after 2000, Indonesian thinkers tried to offer the concept of power based on local wisdom based on local culture. So that emerged local concepts of politics and power. This paper attempts to relate the principles of the local culture of Lampung piil pesenggiri in the context of contemporary politics today, especially in the election, including things mystical. The method used in this research/writing by using qualitative methods with secondary data sources and literature study. The result in the level of the concept piil pesenggiri be ideal, but the level is still questionable practice

    Mediatization has become more relevant in exploring relations between media and politics in post-Suharto Indonesia. However, the media's roles as the fourth estate of democracy has been hijacked by wealthy politicians and political parties. As a result, most mainstream media have failed to enhance public dabates democratically. Based on existing mediatization literature, politico-economy analysis, and data collected through extensive in-depth interviews and relevant documents in the 2013-2015 period, this article theoretically aims to develop the mediatization concept and explore the degree of mediatization of politics in contemporary Indonesia

    The growing number of incubator business and coworking spaces for digital business in Indonesia has raised critical question on its correlation with Indonesian competitiveness in IT industry. This paper attempts to analyze internal factors of each incubator model that drives innovation as well as to identify power relations of actors in IT ecosystem. In the context of Global Value Chain governance, Indonesian incubation model showed tendencies toward relational governance. The type of relation was complex and interdependent. This condition has pushed the emergence of Godfather actor who had specific competences that sustain innovation

    A Conceptual Framework in the Formation of Young Entrepreneurs in Indonesia

    This article is an initial step to reach a conceptual understanding on young entrepreneurs in sociological studies. Many studies pertaining to entrepreneurship have been found in various discipline of studies, however, nothing of note has been found particularly in connection to the concept of youth. The current reality in Indonesia precisely exhibits multiple entrepreneurship activities targeting young people as organizers and participants. The identity of entrepreneur is constructed by tracing and researching the variety of important concepts observed in various literature (written by economy, sociology, and entrepreneurship experts) concerning entrepreneur action. Entrepreneur identity has 4 dimensions: triggering event, innovation, action strategy of start-up arrangement (as stated in the business plan/model), and entrepreneurship implementation. Entrepreneur identity will be discussed by using multiple data obtained from YouTube in the form of speeches, lectures, and interviews of young entrepreneurs until an understanding is ultimately acquired regarding the identity of young entrepreneurs’ base of action by analyzing their emphasis on what they do as entrepreneurs. The discussion develops further as the identity touches on a more complex social context: social welfare, hence, young entrepreneurs also have the identity of young entrepreneurs’ social movement comprising of three phases: initiation, strategic, and control

    This study aims to investigate the implementation of performance appraisal of public services in the Village Cemorokandang as a form of affirmation of bureaucratic reform. This research method using qualitative descriptive through surveys, interviews and distributing questionnaires. The result showed that the implementation of performance appraisal of public services in the Village Cemorokandang was successful. The performance assessment it done using the Sasaran Kerja Pegawai (SKP). SKP has significant impacts on the assessment using such as motivation in the competitive performance, namely as a form of motivation in the competition's performance, an objective in its research and targeted who is rated, control the behavior of employees and enhancements to the character of the civil state apparatus

    Participation Dynamics of Voters Using ID Card in Local Elections: A Case Study of the 2015 Local Election in South Sulawesi

    The number of voters is an essential element in the legitimacy of a democratic regime. There are various factors that may influence voter turnout in elections; among other factors particularly is electoral management in voter’s registration. The problem of voters' data has always been a scourge in every general or local election due to poor population data management in Indonesia. Hence, the General Elections Commission (KPU) responded to this issue with a number of policies to increase the number of voter participation in all elections, especially for those who have not been registered properly. The Commission made a specific regulation to allow voters who were not registered in the voter lists (DPS) to use their ID card (KTP) or other legal documents in voting. This study used qualitative methods in five regions in the South Sulawesi Province that conducted the 2015 local election. This study explores the dynamics of voters using ID card or other legal documents by identifying their reasons and characteristics in using KTP as well as examining the responses of the local election institutions regarding this policy. This condition tends to apply to countries in the transitional period of democracy where the electoral administration system has not been properly regulated. The causes include the failure of administrative systems of management and population data collection with e-KTP card system in Indonesia

    Special Economic Zone at the Crossroads: The Case of Batam

    The establishment and development of Batam are very much related to Indonesia’s development itself. Considering its strategic location, since the 1970s, the Indonesian government has planned and developed Batam to catch economy spillovers from Singapore. The decentralization induces new development paths through critical juncture restructure the institutional setting in the Batam government and innovation of ICT by the Batam Indonesia Free Zone Authority (BIFZA leaders. These new paths introduce new development trajectories for Batam that has relied on manufacturing and infrastructure for its economic development. The paper analyses the impact of the political economy shift on Batam’s economic growth. Using historical institutionalism, the paper argues that the city exhibit urban economy resilience as, despite national politico-economy turbulence, the city creates new opportunities for alternative economic growth channels. The innovation, knowledge accumulation and strong informal ties allow the ICT sector to emerge as the driver of economic growth, adding to the manufacturing sector. This shows the importance of technology adaptation to avoid institutional lock-in and path dependence for local development

    Language as a Status Symbol of Power in Social Interactions at a Multicultural School in the City of Medan

    One’s habit in language use is influenced by daily social life structures thereby creating different interaction patterns both individually or as a group. Sociology of language critically analyzes the use of language as a symbol of power which dominates the arena in a multicultural school. This research utilizes mixed methods as it is considered capable of finding and answering the issues and problems under examination. The location of research was Sultan Iskandar Muda High School which is the only multicultural education curriculum based pilot school in the city of Medan. The informants in this study were the principal, teachers, and students while the respondents were samples of high school students totaling 86 individuals. Research results show that one’s power in language use is determined by one’s interest in using language. School power and individual power has different portions when positioning one’s self during interactions. Although power is coercive in nature, the community must submit to rules of the school. The power of the school in determining language emphasizes values of nationalism, which is different to individual or group power which adjusts the language to the situation at hand so that relations of language use has its own portion of interaction in the multicultural school
